I saw it thousands of time on tv, a tennis player doing exactly the same, if the ball doesn't hit a person who is near the court it loses speed and the danger of hurting someone isn't there anymore. So, given that Denis apologized and took responsibility, there's no need to keep blaming him.
Fun fact: hitting a ref with the ball is an automatic default whether the ref cares or not. That’s just the rules. In the game, it wasn’t the refs decision to default the guy, he just so happened to tell everyone that the guy has defaulted

That ref was lucky. I worked with a guy that got hit in the eye by a serve when he was a teen, and the next day in school his retina detached from the rest of his eye and he lost the ability to see out of it.

it was not up to the umpire to disqualify Shapovalov or not, he had to. That's why a Davis Cup official spoke to him just before the disqualification. It's literally in the rules of tennis

I like that incident at the Hopman Cup in Australia years ago when Marat Safin hit the net umpire (an older lady) in the face with a big forehand. She hardly flinched but he ran over immediately, apologized and kissed her on her hurt cheek. She grinned and the crowd went wild. Great moment.
