- I know that most of you are familiar with the internals of a transmission, but I know that there are people out there, who are interested in seeing this and since I have an open TR6 transmission I decided to show the magic that happens inside.
In general this is the transmission for all TRs - TR2, 3, 4, 4A, 5/250 and 6. There are changes in some bearings, shafts and gear ratios through the years, but how it works is the same for all of them.

If I ever need a teacher in mecanick you'r the one bravo
Elin - one of the best explanations of a transmission I have watched. And now I know my TR6 even better! Thanks bud!!!
Elin, you are an incredible teacher. Thank you for the lesson!
Thank You! Thats one of the best explanations of how a manual transmission works that I've seen.
This video is very helpful. I'm trying to diagnose a issue with my transmission and seeing the gears exposed like this is great.
Perfect explanation. Now I understand the bearing that’s making noise on the input shaft.
Bravo. You are a natural-born teacher!
Yes Elin, that was clear & helpful. You've uncovered a mystery!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Your videos are amazingly informative. Keep them coming!
I have rebuilt probably a dozen TR-6 and Spitfire gearboxes.
This was a great explanation of how they work.
The TR-6 gearbox has a few weak spots. The bearings in the layshaft tend to eat into the layshaft which destroys it. The top hat bushings tend to break if one slams the gear changes too much. The rest of the gearbox is very robust.
They are easy to rebuild and require no special tools.
The top hat was broken in this one. Coming up in the next videos
Thanks a lot from Spain! I recently finish the rebuild of a Spitfire mk3 and your videos and clear explanations has helped me a lot!!
(BTW, I'm in love with your gloves!😍😍)
Best explanation I have ever seen, thank you Elin
Nice job Elin!👍
Excellent explanation, thanks
I finally understand! That was simply brilliant and brilliantly simple.
Excellent explanation! Thanks
Brilliant lesson ! Many thanks Elin !
Thanks Elin, I now understand a lot more about this ‘simple’ system (your words, not mine). It does leave me still wondering how exactly the miracle of synchro rings works. Maybe a future topic, please.
Yeah, I should have explained that as well, but I thought of it way too late. Everything was taken apart already. Maybe when I am putting it back together I might explain that.
That’s a great explanation. Thanks Elin.
You had me up to countershaft then my brain started hurting 😉
I almost didn't watch it for that reason. But strangely I understood it!
@@donprice9050 it’s a very good video….I just like to give Elin the Gears 😉 (get it?)
Switch gears... you are revving it too high!
I have always been fine with engines and have rebuilt a couple, but gearboxes have always been a little bit of a mystery to me. Now you have helped me to understand what is going on under the stick . Much appreciated and a great video explanation, thank you.
That was a great explanation Elin.
Now I know how the gearbox works. I have rebuilt engines but I was never game to tackle a gearbox. This helps a lot. Cheers Chris in Australia
Good job Elin.
👍This is an excellent explanation!
You are a very good explainer. I've watched you explain this a number of times and this was probably the best version. Any chance you good do a similar short video on how the synchros works? Nobody ever explains those. Never understood the mechanics of why those don't grind just like normal gears.
I will include that in my transmission assembling video in the overdrive series I am working on now
Excellent! That's probably the best explanation I've heard. Don't think it matters what car it's from does it? I would think all work the same
Yes, the concept is the same. Just like engines, they are all the same, but they are all different :)
Thanks for the reply Elin, much appreciated my friend
Excellent explanation
What a great explanation! I am learning so much from you.
Thanks Elin, that was a very clear, concise explanation. Now, for me, the manual transmission is no longer a 'Black Box' full of mystery!
Thanks - great explanation 👍
Very enjoyable video, and very clearly explained, well done!! I love these old triumphs, would love to have a Vitesse, it's that shape around the headlights. I had a 1976 spitfire and did a running overhaul of most things whilst using it on a daily basis. I did get caught out on the gearbox though the last stage is to refit the cover and just below the cover is an interlock plate which stops you being able to engage both gear pairs at the same time. If you don't fit that you can lock the gearbox up completely! Unfortunately I found out the hard way!! Good luck from Spain!!
That was great! Was always unclear how a tranny works.
Very interesting
You should be helping me in the garage if that is interesting :)
Very nice :)
Sublime!
Hi Elin
Very educational video 😀👍
My TR6 gearbox has a noise i neutral and in 1-2-and 3 gear, but in 4. Gear it is quiet. I suspect a baering to make the noise, but which Baering would you suspect ? I think either the needle baering between the input and output shaft, or the baerings in each end of the countershaft. My plan is to take the gearbox outof the car this winter.
👍👍👍👍
You should have said in the description if this was the TR6 car or motorcycle!. You're wasting everyone's time!
