The way he is speaking about Sancho, Alli and Homes is cold. That is the personality you've gotta have to be in this job. Just to say 'no' to a lot of people and be emotionless inside is an indication of a top scout
Foreal - I think the clip has been a bit misunderstood on social media tbh. He's not saying that they're bad players by any means - he is saying that he decided they weren't the best fit for Chelsea at the time. Was he right? One to debate...

I actually appreciate this, he's made a pretty good shout on all of them even at a young age and whilst I appreciate he was potentially wrong about their technical skills, attitude wise he was spot on.
Reminds me of when American coaches talk about intangibles.
But somehow players like mount go through.
"Cold"......"emotionless".....with all due respect...this is a very Old Skool way of dealing with young players. As adults in sport, we also have a duty of care to these young people. I know football is a business but at the end of the day, the kids are not machines. They are people with thoughts and emotions who are still trying to learn and find their way in life.
This is why a lot of the ones that don't make it end up with mental health issues and/or become suicidal. As a collective, we must address this "meat grinder" style of producing quality players.

As a mixed-heritage coach, my opinion on Chris' question (on the reason why a lack of diversity in coaching) is that the answer is multifaceted and multidimensional... There's family/cultural pressures which drive cerebral talents (who'd otherwise succeed in coaching) into alternative & higher paid industries where respect (a non-negotiable aspect in many diverse cultures) is more easy to come by... There's perceptions by diverse coaches of the wider culture of English football as being a place where often exclusionary, discriminatory & deliberately oppositional practices happen in subtle & plausibly deniable - though not indetectable - forms; designed, it often seems, to deliberately scupper diverse coaches who often bring new perspectives... There's the difference where coaches are sometimes expected to turn a blind eye to discriminatory behaviours (no matter how infrequent) which cumulatively become impossible to ignore (eg. when raised concerns are ignored), and how this causes diverse coaches to choose between their conscience and their love of coaching... There's the 'uncertainty over dependency' aspect where diverse coaches understand that success in coaching depends on a deep and dependable network and that the deeper the network, the more likely the odd individual within that network may prove susceptible to cultural hang-ups/hangovers... There's the fact that limited opportunities are further put at risk by the potential weaponisation of rules & regulations which while well-meaning can be abused by competitor coaches for advantage... There's the lack of opportunities - can you imagine how dispiriting it is to hear/read the story of Dwight Yorke's failed attempts to get into coaching despite having the right qualifications!? If a guy who played at the highest level and won it all, if he can't make it as a pro coach, then what chance the rest of us?... Then there's the poor pay to top it all off... And that's before getting into the darker side of the cases of abuse of power by powerful figures in the game locally, regionally, etc (rarer though not yet extinct)... Who would put up with any of this for a pittence?! And why should they?! Want to increase diversity in coaching? Compete with other industries that offer a smoother ride on the non-negotiables...

Honest and insightful. It does make me think that the path to being an established premier league player is in a small part a lottery. One observation how many dads with 5 sons have 4 that have been through the academy system

Great Advice as a father of a Asian Academy Cat 1 player taken away some solid advice. Resilience is the one as a failed footballer myself lack of Resiliency and family support is main factor for Asians, however as a 2nd generation British Asian our kids have total support and equal opportunities now. No one will stop you if you good enough, racism is no longer an excuse.

I think Theirry Henry was saying on the Champions League show that Spanish football scouts look at the mental aptitude of the player and their football IQ so about movement off the ball. UK seems to be focused on the physical aspects. Not if a footballer is smart or not.

To answer Chris’ question. It is lack of diversity in decision making roles in football clubs. There’s an conscious/unconscious bias in football clubs on how Managment and players should look, behave, speak etc. At the heart of it, football is an old boys sport. It’s about who the decision makers can relate to because it’s more comfortable for them. A good player and a “good lad” together counts as the perfect player/manager to recruit. “Good lad” meaning they have similar background and understanding of each other.
Perfect case study is QPR Academy. At the time, Tony Fernandes (Indian Owner) Les Ferdinand (Director of football). That club was the most diverse I’ve seen in staff and players. Most South Asian players I’ve seen at club to this day. Because they’re recruiting who the best is for the role and doing their best to wipe away any bias.
Answer is, football ex-pro’s/aspiring coaches should aim for other roles that just management. They should be taken seriously for decision making roles like Les. More like a “money-ball” approach to recruitment Holding senior staff accountable to make sure they diversify as best they can by looking at who is best in class in the industry and getting them in. No matter race, sex or anything else.

It easier to scout fast & strong players from age 7&8, tbh grandma could spot those boys, but difficult to scout football intelligence at that age, we might get bunch of Rashford & saka in the end, but missed all the pirlo & kroos in the process

I feel for managers. How can you put some faith in the youth when the game is driven heavily by results, expecially Chelsea managers who never last more than two seasons.

Well, you know, if scouts and coaches really look at that 3 points it would be great. But in fact they are looking only for big guys that's why we have poor quality of football in low divisions

Chris' question about the lack of British Asian footballers in academies is an interesting one. Outside of the obvious issues of general attitudes in this country, I think a lot of it comes down to immigrant mentality - as Chris points out, a lot of jobs in football are inherently insecure and a lot of British Asian kids are 1st or 2nd gen immigrants, whose parents will have sacrificed a lot of start a new life in a new country. It's only natural that they'd push their kids towards more stable careers than football, especially considering committing to football is obviously going to come at the expense of more traditional academic qualifications.
Plus I think there's a big cultural clash there. So much football culture in this country is still so intrinsically linked with drinking alcohol. It's not really compatible or welcoming to anyone who is a practicing Muslim, for example.

Here in Australia we've had plenty of ethnic South Asian families for some decades now, but talents of South Asian origin have only begun to break into the Aussie cricket grassroots in the last 10 years or so. That's entirely down to attitudes, whichever way you choose to characterise them. Attitudes take a while to change.
Do you realise that it isn't racism as to why South Asian players are few and far between?
They love cricket for starters. The parents don't want them to be footballers, they want them to be doctors or cricketers.
The majority haven't been anywhere near good enough to be professional let alone semi professional.

Not only is Sancho not good enough for Chelsea, he isn't good enough for the premier league. When Sancho comes up against good premiership defenders he gets found out, he's fine against defenders in the Bundesliga who are slower and not very good.
Entirely agree, and even in Bundesliga his best form was only when coming off the bench against tired legs. He's quick with his feet but not very quick between the ears

Yeah thats fair man. Still a great interview. Gives a really good insight into scouting and gives young lads who are maybe 16 even a chance to keep going like he said clubs are more open-minded now. Kane was let go of Arsenal as a young lad and he's probably the best striker in the world.

the question at the end for the rising ballers community just shows how insular the game is. if an experienced scout feels the need to ask the question rather than answer the question with his 30 years of experience then its a tragedy.
For the bad agents ecosystem to exist best believe that there are some bad officials working at clubs enabling behaviours and getting paid. That's a narrative that ex officials never seem to light on. It is always a point finger attitude..
CFC said no to Mbappe too, which means these old boys are looking for a different skill-set to the new generation of entertainers.
