@@jxhxhkzhjz8032 In my opinion I think people like romantic relationship, etc. in any type of story there is. While Mariko seems obvious as a main female character and love interest for Blackthorne, she is very complicated character and most of the time uptight compares to Fuji (who by the way has her tragedy as well). We often see Fuji in an uplifting way since Blackthorne has his house (I love when she points the gun to Omi scene). That brings the cuteness in the character, and a lot of people like cute girl and uncomplicated relationship.

I am Japanese, but I cannot understand the way people thought in the 1600s. There is a gap between generations, even between parents and children, so it is natural that they cannot understand the feelings of people centuries ago. Some of their customs have been handed down to the present day, but less than you might think.
It is very interesting to see such a faithful portrayal of medieval society with its status system, which can be hard to watch. Japanese period dramas do not portray this much, so this drama probably expresses Anjin's anxiety and conflicts of living in a different culture.
A period drama from 1,000 years ago is being broadcast in Japan this year, but it has been modernised considerably for the broadcasting time.
Their customs have not been transmitted to the modern world. But we are the same people, so our feelings are the same. So I also watch this drama focusing on human emotions.

Not an insurmountable problem...The other comment is that, the lady playing the part of Fujiko, was about 7 years younger than Anna Sawai ?.... Really ?... I think the title is excellent, and Toranaga move of placing the canon regiment under Yabu's nephew is exactly what the title means, effectively putting Yabu under his fist. You see, if Yabu now wants to submit to Ishido, Ishido has doubts as to whether Yabu can be trusted since the canons which killed his samurai are effectively under Yabu's command through Omi. Yabu is damnned if he switches sides, and so is broken to Toranaga's fist!

As someone from nomadic clan ancestry of Turks of Anatolia
Blackthorne could've get a tip from Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli, one of the big mystics of 13th century Anatolian Turks, who mixed shamanistic worldview, Buddhist mysticism and Islam.
''Mind your hand, mind your body, mind your tongue'' is one of his key ideas about living around folk of different cultures. Not saying much ,not making bold claims and always considering how people will interpret what you say. In his days, Turks were taking hold of Anatolia, where a lot of christians with different ethnic groups were also living
Blackthorne is just blatantly saying words without understanding to whom he's speaking, bird was rotting there, he didn't even notice it. He was preoccuppied, not realising he had complete power in his own household, it's not a hotelroom.

It will be hard for anyone to flat out beat Toranaga when he is so far ahead of everyone... plus he now has European cannons. 💥I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I was able to put the pieces together that there must have been a time jump because J.B.'s Japanese is improving. Plus John & Fuji's growing mutual respect over the time-jump is very evident (i.e. he does not treat her like a sexual object, while Buntaro on the other hand ungentlemanly asks Fuji about being a consort to the barbarian). The show tells me Japan women at this particular time are not to be in a leadership role, so I am still a little confused about Ochiba's chances of a successful power-play even if she is the mom of the young heir-apparent? That aside, it is fun seeing her channeling her inner-Cersei Lannister! 👑

Toranaga's army just got washed away by the tsunami though. Fuji is likely a spy for Taranaga. That's why she's being so cooperative & respectful. Plus Blackthorne isn't interested in her as a consort. I'm assuming Blackthorne has been there for a year or more. If he & Fuji were ever going to be an item that would've likely happened already. Also, the lack of bathing and rotting animals Blackthorne likes shows why Europe had so many plagues happening during those times. Also, Blackthorne had a firearm, not a sword when he went after Buntaro. That's probably why Buntaro chose to apologize instead of chopping his head off.

But I also believe that Toranaga sent him there to curtail anything occurring between Mariko and Blackthorn, even though we and he may know that something already has.
After all, if it's verifiable, Toranaga will have no option but to kill them or have them killed, which would truly throw a major monkey wrench into his military plans.
If he does not kill them, Bontaro, who is a mighty samurai and proved his loyalty by accepting his fate and staying behind for Toranaga, could defect and likely take others with him, especially with Blackthorn being a barbarian. Toranaga could have a mass exodus on his hands and seal his fate. After all, he already knows that he is outnumbered.
    It's a delicate situation.

Emotions are like the actions of nature, a falling cherry blossom or a Tidal Wave. But it is handled from the respect that is part of the eightfold fence space between the walls and can be used between men as a home's peace should not be disturbed therefore apology is offered in humility for that offence to the master of the house. Hereto, respect is the foundation as both men holding to emotion should have torn each other apart instead found a space between walls to discharge both emotion and show respect. While Fuji found space to act in her restored agency to exert control in being consort to a samurai - to serve as a samurai, again.

Yes, two good points... ( I guess you have also read the book ? )... The attempted suicide would have added too much to the time limit to the episode... And as for the Hornpipe dancing, it was shown so brilliantly in the 1980 version, but maybe for the 2024 version, it does not look so good for men to be dancing, from the point of view of the Japanese audience ?

When you create a commotion in another's home in Japan that you are a guest in, you have greatly shamed yourself. And owe an apology to the owner. So when Anjin came out and contfronted him, he was WELL within his rights. Had Buntaro attacked Blackthorn, and won, he would have been executed.
As he is supposed to be a general in Toronaga's army...it would have been a waste...for a woman that is a traitor.

The acting is fantastic, the settings and costumes really well done, and the cinematography is first class. But they've made a big mistake in the writing.
The issue with the 1980s series was that they concentrated too much on Blackthorne, and you didn’t get the full spectrum of the Japanese politics. This series has done the opposite - they are focussing on the Japanese side and minimising Blackthorne.
The problem is that Blackthorne is the heart of the story. His journey to understanding and embracing the language and the culture is the audience / reader’s way into the world. This series has missed out the importance of those scenes - as with the story of the gardener and the pheasant - and the audience is left outside the world it is trying to vicariously inhabit.
They’re also dumbing-down and treating the audience like idiots.
None of the main story points seem to have any nuance and the characters are too one-sided. Mariko has never laughed, she's always so depressed, and I really don't believe her suddenly wanting to pillow with Blackthorne after disliking him so much. It’s the opposite of GOT.
In the book of Shogun, the story of the gardener and the pheasant was a massive learning experience for Blackthorne, and also for Toranaga as they began to understand each other more. But in this series, Toranaga is just contemptuous of Blackthorne, and then Blackthorne miraculously redeems himself in the earthquake. Too simple and far less engaging.
And did they change the name of the village from Anjiro to Ajiro because they thought the audience would confuse Anjiro with Anjin? It didn’t confuse anyone last time around ...
I’ll continue watching because it has enough of the book in it for me to want to see the rest. But so far, I’d watch the 1980s series out of preference, as the storytelling was so much more enjoyable that I can forgive the lack of resources and the 80s conventions.

Absolutely perfect comparison... So far, I have only found ONE scene which is better in the 2024 version... The map drawn by Blackthorne is better, and easier to see how the Dutch fleet got through the Pass of Magellan, and across the Pacific Ocean to Japan... I thought the map drawn by Chamberlain was not so clear ? And, as for the actors in the 2024 version, here are my top 3... no.1 is Toranaga, no. 2 is Fujiko ( very hot lady ) ... and no. 3 is the Erasmus ship !

When the spy was told to "find another spy", I think the gardner knew that he didn't have much time left and volunteered to not only take down to pheasant but also serve his "purpose" to his lord.
