This game is really interesting in that it takes what everyone is constantly doing on autopilot, and puts it frontstage in the spotlight, making it seem really awkward and mean. We're constantly surveying people around us and determining if we find them physically attractive or not, even if it's usually sub-conscious. It's pretty rare for people to actively pursue a relationship with someone they aren't physically attracted to, and for most people, there are going to be a lot more people you aren't attracted to than people you are.
In the context of this game, it seems like a dick move to reject people you aren't attracted to, because it's put on full display and seems shallow. And perhaps it is. But I think maybe that's just natural, and we're all a little bit shallow in some ways, even if we don't want to admit it. But what would be better? Acknowledging this, and finding someone you are actually attracted to, or trying to deny it and make a relationship work when you don't find them all that attractive, only to risk really hurting them down the line because there isn't enough of a connection? I think the former is probably better.
It’s not shallow to have physical preferences in a person. That’s where we go wrong, with calling it shallow. Like you said, it’s about not wanting to hurt them later on down the line; like imagine being with someone that you’re not 100% into and then you see someone else that you like way more. I’d rather be with the person that I look at and my jaw hits the floor, as well as the personality compatibility being just as important.
@@Kryptomi I don't know, I think physical attraction might always be shallow, but that doesn't mean it's bad. If you think about it as a water metaphor (as shallow and deep sort of are), attraction to someone's personality is clearly the deep aspect, and attraction to their physical appearance is the shallow one.
And the way we metaphorically use the term shallow in general is also really all about a face-value limited view or way of engaging with something. And that defines physical attraction pretty perfectly I think.
The thing is that when people generally say someone is being shallow, the assumption is that they are being exclusively shallow, and that they have no interest in anything deeper. But I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with being a little shallow in some ways, as a means to getting deeper. After all, you don't usually reach the deep end without first going through the shallows.

He wasn’t attracted to her.
He lied about being attracted to her because he didn’t want to get buzzed off right away since she was closer to the button than he was.
He likely had serious doubts as to whether she was into him. Just look at her body language , she is terrified of being rejected. She’s hunched forward with her arm on the table; in contrast with his , he was laid back and relaxed.
He needed to lie and play it cool so that he could keep her off her guard.
Once her guard was down he was able to quickly hit the button before she could; thereby securing himself another date.
This is like a modified version of the prisoner's dilemma, where instead of admitting the other one is guilty, they are admitting the other one isn't a perfect 10/10.
