important for international or people just not from around narrm/brunny - Ceres is the name of where the bike shed is located, and it's a pretty special place in contrast to most commercial or profit driven enterprises. It started as a local cleanup mission for the Merri river nearby and has grown into a educational institute, a community farm, workshops and family space which are all run to a give-back system. It's really special to see a place like Ceres still thriving in a society that only values capital and labour. Not to mention any kids like myself who half grew up in the mad playgrounds here.
awesome, thank you for explaining! was def tricky to work out CERES when i first visited, but ya you are spot on !
Great comment love to hear the history!
This is what real community spirit is about.
Thanks for showing us around. 🙂
Hell ya ! No worries , glad you liked it ! 😊
shops like these should be everywhere...
Ya ! Amazing place, great for the community
gary salivating at all that wd40 they got
😂😂😂 thirsty for wd40
hello gary, after watching your own bike restoration videos and others I was inspired to fix up a bike for my girlfriend. this lead to fixing up a whole load more and eventually getting involved in my similar local bike volunteer place. it's the Bike Hub Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, Ireland. i now run a weekly upcycling deal fixing donated bikes and then gifting them to charitable causes. it's a ton of fun, these volunteer-run bike workshops are a great idea and i only wish there were more !
Wow!! That is amazing !! I love that , keep up the great work !!
What a wonderful place. I would be in my element working there.
Thanks Gary, that was rather inspirational.
awesome!! ya they are doing a great job of saving old bikes was inspiring for me too! cheers !
Bridget and The Bike Shed are very rad
Sure are ! Thank you 😊
I wish we had a bike community here that could support something like this.Good people working on good bikes for their community. I'd love to go work on bikes outside with an endless supply of parts a few hours a week. My bike community is all Lycra, clip ins, carbon fiber or fixies.
gotta start with the man in the mirror
This video was SUPER COOL to watch. Thanks a lot for sharing, dude. I live in NYC and chances are I'll never be able to visit this wonderful place or meet these people. It's what I come to CZcams for, see the world, celebrate how we're different but complementary. Keep them coming!
Wow thank you my dude i appreciate that !! That’s the great thing about the internet, can easily share stuff. Hope to do more in the future , will do my best cheers!!
Love these inside-looks at bike shops, Gary.. The people and places are always interesting!
Thank you i appreciate that, glad you like it! always cool to meet up and talk about bikes !
On exchange in Lisbon and today the first thing people at the bike shop said when I said I was from Aus was "Oh, do you know Garys Projects?" Awesome stuff mate
Hahaha what no way ! That’s funny thanks for sharing ! Honored 😊
That was a great video Gary! You had awesome questions too. Volunteer run bike co-ops should be in every major city. A great way to get people into bikes that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them.
Cheers mate! i totally agree & also save a lot of those bikes form going to landfill too! win win for everyone!
Well done Gary and Bridget.
thank you very much Joe!
This is awesome, great to see the rebirth of all these bikes and the satisfaction of getting them back on the road.
Cheers my dude ! I agree!
fantastic!
Thank you very much ! 😊
Another legend effort..
Thank you very much !

Hey so nice to see the shed on your channel. I’ve been volunteering there since 2020! Are you gonna come volunteer sometime gary?
awesome great job!! tbh i probably won't because it's a bit far from where i live, but def will stop by here and there, maybe another project together in the future, we'll see !
Thanks for the tour! This video is awesome. I lived in Melbourne for two years, wish I had known about this place!
That’s awesome ! Hope you enjoyed your stay haha
Awesome, thanks for the video, I will drop by during my next trip to Melbourne!
Hell ya ! No worries thanks for watching!
@@garysprojects Hey Gary, I had the pleasure to visit the bike shed today, one of the volunteers showed us around. I nearly bought a bike! I only have a couple days left in Melbourne, so I will drop by next time I come here for more days and get another bike for sure. Thanks again for the tip.
what an awesome place, thanks for the tour Gary, great stuff
No worries , thanks for watching! Ya great to be able to share the place with people! Cheers
breaks my heart to see bikes on the back of scrap collectors vans, thanks Gary@@garysprojects
Cool
Thanks Gary, for sharing. 😍☕️
No worries mate, thanks for watching ! Cheers
I love this
Thank you !! Great place 😊
Where I live there a place like that. Volunteer fox bikes and work to have your own. And you can buy bikes from the place and parts. I been there for parts. Super cool there are places like that.
Hell ya it’s awesome, great place to work on bikes if you don’t have space / tools etc
I’m definitely guilty of buying new bikes, but every time I walk into a bike store I also think ”does the world really need more bikes” ✌️🚲
So true!! some of new bikes are cool, but yeah definitely a lot of junk (new) bikes get produced too
I think we just need more people to use bikes more often, not just buying or making them.
ah man would be so cool to work somewhere like this!
definitely!! had a good chill positive vibe to it for sure!!
I've heard of that place and keep meaning to ride over and have a look. Oh, the "gong" house. I misheard that one.. If they stripped the aluminum off that scrap they could get some beer money. Turns out that I have a thing longerer; who knew ? 😂
😂😂😂 ya go check out it if you get the chance, was a good time !
Oh man I wish we had places like this. Very cool
Ya cool place! Lots of replacement parts to get you outta trouble
Hey, why not do a build collab with someone at that shed? I'd be interesting to see what you come up with.
Thanks for the tour that's a really special part of Melbourne. I was in my LBS just after Christmas and the guy said exactly the same thing, where do they all go 🤷♀️
For sure great space! Yeah when you think about all the old bikes they gotta go somewhere ay 😬
I love ceres, shame that its on the other side of town for me, but if i were local id be living there
See if you can setup a tent out back 😂😂
so awesome mate :)
Thank you Todd! I appreciate that 😊
vry cool!
Thank you Carson ! Was cool to visit for sure 👍
I just spotted the Ricardo I have a 1987 racer
Nice!! Classic Aussie bikes
kool
Cheers
Extra benefit of the open-air setup is that it's covid-safe 🙌🏻
Watching from the soggy UK that place looks the stuff of dreams!
Nothing like some sunny fresh air! Hopefully it warms up for you soon !! 😊
Where is this place? Fantastic looking place
Links in description, she also gives directions on where to find them at the end of the video
I found the address at the end of CZcams clip
Here in christchurch NZ there's an identical entity named rad bikes which has just moved into bigger, better (weatherproof) premises and of course shout out to the boys at the second hand shop, around again cycles...
you forgot to ask what it's like trying to keep the weather from the bikes/components as that's something of an issue for the industry, lol
I can try to answer that question! All the really good bikes are fixed quickly and sold the same week, but everything that gets donated has sat around unloved outside or in a garage for a good long while before being donated anyway. We aren’t losing parts to weather that we want to use, that stuff is long dead before it makes it to the shed.
Being in the inner north of melb its a fair way from the sea so no salty air getting to the parts and a lot of the donations are from nearby(even further north too) with similar conditions. Our geography is a massive benefit to us. we also aren’t overly concerned with the cosmetic side of the bikes, if everythings working its ready to go to a new owner.
@@nickwatson2217 thank you Nick!! appreciate the insight!
@@nickwatson2217 hi nick, cheers for your reply
I guess I should have been a little more specific with my question lol....
Firstly I've been involved (either directly/indirectly) with the second hand bike industry for several years and I understand the lottery behind whats donated. The last shop I worked at we struggled with keeping any inventory from environmental damages and it was a mission to keep it all serviceable, let alone sellable.
In the vid I noticed an awful lot of inventory outside incl wheels, tyres, forks, saddles all of which do not react well over time to rain or sun exposure, is this stock dead or is there no room to store it away from the environment safely?
Essentially what is the co -op doing to mitigate environmental exposure to inventory?
... hint, shipping containers are a godsend for the industry and are relatively cheap
@@blairrighton6270
A lot of what you see stored outside is recently stripped junk that hasnt made it up to the rubbish area yet, that stuff gets moved to the bins as we find the time. Lower quality wheels/tyres live outside, some of them get used, the good stuff is well protected. Anything thats stored outside is essentially stuff we are’t too sad to lose to theft or weather. Cant save everything! Theres plenty of good saddles, wheels, tyres and frames stored inside the shed ready to be put on the bikes we fix every week. We send on some donations to other more recently started bike sheds around melbourne that dont get as many donations as we do so they can build up their operations. So I guess the answer to your question is: Prioritisation of usage and storage. The more storage space we have the more it would get filled with junk! Kinda like adding lanes to highways. Dunno where we’d fit a shipping container onsite but great idea!
The shed is a not-for profit, not a co-op. All profits go back to the running of the shed. It started 40 years ago as a large pile of bikes… you’d see the part you wanted, reach in to the pile, strip it off and put of your bike! Its come a long way since then :)
great shop, great interview. camera work gave me a headache and made me want to throw up.
Hahah thank you ! Hopefully it’s better next time
Those places are like heaven for bike loving people like me/us😍and also having such a positiv environmental and social impact🌟🌟🌟big thanks for showing us around that lovely place…how could one resist not taking parts with you, could you!?☺️cheers mate😎
Thank you mate, great values for sure , glad they are doing good. haha yes they have so many parts, maybe next time i will buy some 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@garysprojects alright, let me now😉☺️
