Now see how this perform in a destruction test with chopping DRY newspaper and flyers rolls. It's sharp and durable, well worth the money! The "real" katana that I suggest? goo.gl/Esvv5q

    actually, there is very little difference. I highly doubt any sword would cut that board across the grain like that. The resistance to a sword cutting through something does not really come from the edge; it comes from having to force the whole sword through the object. Two swords of the same shape and weight will pretty much perform the same in most cutting tests, regardless of cost, edge-sharpness or the quality of the steel.

      +Geoffrey Loicq He's right, you use a katana to slash objects. The only place the katana should make contact with is the target and nothing else. Also you're supposed to use the front portion of a katana because traditionally it is the only sharp part.

    • @peekaboo5925
      @peekaboo5925 Před 9 lety +1

      +Geoffrey Loicq katanas are mainly slash type weapons. chinese swords however were designed to stab/lunge. these are their main style of combat. granted u can stab/lunge/chop with a katana but that is not how u use it to its full potential. neither was it designed for that purpose.

    These things come like that sharp out of the box, I don't even sharpen them at all. But if I need to, which I did to one.. there are a few ways. Casual and quick way is to use a lansky sapphire stone and tune the edge by eyeballing, but if I go serious, I use a benchstone and whetstone to do it the traditional way, boring but the only way that can get you a nice decent edge for cutting. Nothing is better than that, haha~

    Metallurgical test is done like this: you cut a piece of katanas blade and check material strength or hardness with special apparatus. Also you could make bending test for the blade, how many bounds a 20 cm piece of blade can tolerate (bending), or even total length of blade. Sharpness test with A4 must always have same paper thickness

    Just to let you know, I'm a knife collector not a martial artist, but
    Cheness Cutlery Inc makes real swords for martial arts. $200-$300.

    I like using one now and then to practice form because they do have a different balance and feel than a Bokken. I try to transfer the feel of the live sword to the Bokken when I test. But I have to admit they do making pruning the bushes a lot more more fun than with hedge clippers. Just be ready to be labeled the 'crazy ninja guy' if the neighbors see you at it.

    As affordable replica katanas (meaning not authentic Japanese made nihonto katanas), $100 range and up are decent enough and battle ready (although are nowhere near as durable as nihonto). I own an Auway Dragon Katana. It's also a full tang and 1095 high carbon steel. You can find good $100 Auway katanas on eBay.

    i have that sword and i paided 40$ for it. it cuts pork really well ( used a road killed pig to tested it out on.) it's called the Onikiri Musashi Katana or the Musashi - Practical Daimyo.

  • @taoaoal
    @taoaoal Před 11 lety

    Theh point of this guys sharpness test isn't how sharp the sword is, it's how well the sword retains its sharpness after the exercises and it is pretty impressive. There's a good reason why the samurai never had "4$" katanas.

    $2000 plus isn't what I would call affordable for most people unless they have lots of extra money they can spend on frivolous things.
