They are a parking aid, to indicate the end of the rear while parking.

How tf does it not have steering controls? By that I mean no music, telephone, heated steering wheel buttons.
This is 1992 buddy! Heated steering wheels didn't even exist until the early 2000's. Neither did the steering wheel control buttons. The W140 chassis shows it's age in that sense!
Not even the later models? E38 has steering wheel controls...
Less ear throbbing music next time. Especially when it's many decibels above your voice. What happened with the car? What's the update?
