  • The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S580 ($172,000 CAD, ~$124,100 USD) is a luxury sedan filled to the brim with modern tech and refined passenger comforts. But how does it compare to the 1997 Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class (~$7,000 CAD, ~$5,545 USD) of yesteryear? The W140 generation of S-Class was known for its innovative new tech and an unmistakably smooth ride. Thomas and James look to see just how much S Class you can get for about 7 grand Canadian, and just how far the platform has come in nearly 25 years. SUBSCRIBE!

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life./Inspiration+It is sad for me to think about the billions of people that are never taught about Christ. Even worse are the billions of people that are refusing His love. What do you have to lose by believing? Nothing at all. More importantly, what do you stand to lose by not believing? Think about that. /Prayer+Jesus Christ, son of God, every day I thank Your Father that I have a relationship with You. I do not deserve it, I did not ask for it, but You came for me because You know what I need. I need You now, precious Lord Jesus. My friends and family need You too. Give me the wisdom to speak to them humbly and help convince them of the power of Your love, and the patience to know when or when not to speak. In accordance with Your commandments, I humbly ask this prayer, Amen.

I can't agree more with the one comment about the stuck on screens. I can't wait till MB gets back to integrated screens and interiors sculpted around the tools you use to drive the car. I loved seeing the w140 in this video. The very first Mercedes I ever drove was a 1992 600 SEL which left a huge impression on my 16 year old self at the time. That car was revolutionary for its time and I remember loving the instrument cluster with the massive, sculpted hood over the numerous dials. Mercedes's direction with interiors today has driven me to BMW, however I'm sure a new generation of vehicles will lure me back at some point.

    • @oliverlebt6250
      @oliverlebt6250 Před 2 lety +3

To drop the rear head rests was not a feature that had been invented in that 90s S Class. It had been available in a mercedes E Class in 1986 already. Maybe it had been invented for the 80s S Class or even before that.
But I appreciate that both of the moderators appreceated that feature much more than all that touch display bullshit. In my opinion the "cockpit" equipped with two totally dominating touchscreens is absolutly ugly and a total design catastrophy, especially the one behind the stearing wheel. It looks as if the car is still in the testing process without having a speedmeter etc. built in and the testing engineer has placed his tablet behind the stearing wheel as an improvised solution to get instant driving data during several testing cycles.----
It seems as if the constructors had forgotten that they were building a car instead of an entertainment fascillity.
To make my point of view clear, I am not against an option to get access to a touchscreen while driving, but the screen itself is an ugly object to be looked at while not in use. So it should be out of sight then.
Concerning the tachometer, speedometer etc. I would prefer classic instruments. If there are advantages in led displays, which lead to choose one, it should be designed to imitate the appearance of classic instruments at least.
From outside the new S class is not looking good. Someone in the comments wrote it looks like a used soap, I agree to that.
Especially the front is looking bad, there is no consistency in the forms of the different parts of it.

Hey guys Brilliant review on the w223 and the w140! At the risk of being the peanut gallery and nit nerding the details, the w140 is very very forward in its execution. The double glazed glass is entirely unique to the w140 in that it is manufactured like that of your home rather than other glass wherein the panes are sandwiched together. Further, a comparison between the top-flite s580 and entry level s320 swb is not entirely fair either as the then top spec s600 came with most everything you commented about in the s580, or it was available as an option. That includes adaptive suspension, added sound deadening, adjustable rear seats, more power, adjustable seating, phone, fax, tv, and nav. The model you have there is likely a 96, which would make it the first of the decontented Mercedes of the schrempp years. 95 has more features and 97 re added some and replaced asr w esp and bas, added sound deadening, new electronics for the engine w new mounts making it quieter, new transmission, new security and improved handling.

@@MaticTheProto people like me? I hate unnecessary electronics like this. Don’t get me started on touchpad screens replacing all buttons and dials so you need to go through 3 layers of menu to change the temperatures. You misread me totally.

I see nothing wrong with it because touchscreens are and is the future of today, so I don't see why you'd complain unless you're as old as my mom and can't keep up with all this technology. Things are changing and you can either be stuck in the past or evolve with it. It's like in the early 1900's when vehicles started becoming a thing, people said that horses and buggys are better yet here we are.

@@vince3523 I use touch screens all the time but they are a dangerous idea in cars because you need to take your eyes off the road and to try and hit individual touch buttons while the car is moving. A physical knob and button requires much less time with your eyes off the road to operate. Having to go through layers of touch menus to change the temperature or turn on heated seats is crazy. Just because something works best in one situation doesn’t make it the best for everything.

I own a W140 S600L. I don't know the config you have been driving, but there is Active Body Control for the W140, ensuring a damn comfy ride. The V12 reduces the noise inside even more (your 320 seemed rather loud)
Also "Fun fact": There was a EU project that implemented self driving in the W140. Project VAMORS.

I have the new class got it 4 months ago (living in Albania now, the top private dealerships here got a lot of them in hand) I must say it’s a crazy car. Everywhere I go I get looks, the interior is crazy at night but ya the ride is kind eh.

My younger brother's first car was a W140 S-class - specifically, a 1998 S 320 pretty similar to the one in the video. That car was a tank. The trunk was ginormous, and when it shut it had this metallic "clank" that was really satisfying.

That music with Thomas in the back of the Merc should be the start of the intro to your show. It is very regal and would be hilarious when followed up with the comedy bits you have now.

I dedicated most of channel to the w140. Although they are getting old and don’t have the modern tech, they are extremely reliable and all the issues with electronics can be fixed by the average weekend DIYer
