In September 1969, Army Sergeant First Class Melvin Morris led an advance across enemy lines near Chi Lang, Vietnam, to retrieve a fallen comrade and keep sensitive documents from falling into enemy hands.
He single-handedly destroyed an enemy force that had pinned his battalion from a series of bunkers. He was shot three times, including once in the chest, but did not stop until he reached relative safety with the American casualty.
Decades would pass from his action in Vietnam until he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama in 2014, the only living African American hero of the men known as the 'Valor 24', who received the military's highest honor following a lengthy review of their actions in previous wars.

Tks nurse Carole, many many share your feelings for Sgt Morris. Thank you for your service. david plt medic 2/8 4th ID. VN.
Thank You So Much for your Service.
My father was in MACV-SOG northern unit... I found out when I was 50 years old he didn't tell me much about it it was classified...
HBO need to do a series about the SOG guys. They did great job on Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Now it's time for our heroes who fought in Vietnam War.
Hard to tell a good heartwarming story about a war we shouldn’t have been in.
It is when you make it about the heroes who loved ea h other and died for each other and show respect to the enemy and the lies that brought the poor soldiers there
@@jbryantphotographer I am sorry but when has Band of brothers or The Pacific been labeled as " Heartwarming " ? They made a good show about WW2 why would Vietnam be any different?
Only thing I know about SOG that's in the media is the video game Call of Duty, "Black Ops" where you play as a MACV SOG. They're portrayed as bad ass.
BIG FACTS MAN I JUST rewatched the pacific for the third time and I thought the same exact thing. WE NEEED a vietnam miniseries like the pacific
Sir as a retired black Special Forces senior leader thank you for leading the way and your dedicated service. I'm humble and proud. "DE OPPRESSOR LIBER"
I hope you are well mate. War damages so many good people in so many ways. I've met some vets that have had some terrible ongoing suffering. My respect and best wishes from Queensland Australia Mate 😊
Thank you for your service
@@matthewcullen1298 Much respect too Aussie S.F., you guy's were knee deep in Vietnam during this time period.
I was born in 73' so I had a step dad who was in the 1st Cavalry, Air mobile division. We lost him after only 5 short years from cancer due to the Agent Orange.
In his life, he saved us and in his death, he gave us a life.
I honor him every day, for I bare his last name.
He was the hero mom and I needed.
I'm certain you were the hero many needed.
Thank you.

As an Army Veteran. I served with the 10th mountain in 2005/2006 in Iraq. This dude...regardless of race, creed, gender, sex, geographic location of birth, hemisphere of earth, planet of solar system is a strait up G. True American hero. I salute you, sir🫡
Hey ..I was there too... the same time as you in Summer of 05-06
10th Mountain Div. 2-22 Infantry. Hope all is well with you, take good care brother
My cousin David Bruce was there in that unit in Iraq ranger ❤
I agree with you in everything besides the whole race crap . Aren't we all. Human
All I can say is thank you!
Old school brave .
No attitude no boasting no bull.
He is such a humble man! We’ve had the Honor & Privilege of meeting him several times while he was in Northeast Ohio for a Veterans & M.O.H. Recipients Event. He was very receptive to conversation & actually a quiet individual, and yet very articulate & outspoken with a very calm demeanor. He’s no doubt the Real Deal!
I would love to sit and talk to this elder!! As a OIF veteran myself....!!
Were you in Bay Village?
Why wouldn’t he be articulate ? Why do you feel the need to point out that he’s articulate ?
@@julianmitchell5776 because a lot of people aren't articulate. your questions seems very odd.
@@julianmitchell5776 Because a lot of people aren't articulate, I'm one of them.
“I didn’t worry about getting hit by my own hand grenades, i just had to take care of the problem”. I can’t believe he was able to walk due to his massive balls of steel, lol! Thank you for your service sir! “Lest We Forget”
That's a real hero. Thank you for your above and beyond service.
MACV-SOG’s CCN (Command and Control North) was no joke. They ran missions into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. I highly recommend listening to SOGCAST or Jocko’s interviews from SOG operators. They had the highest k/d ratio in US military history at 157:1 but they had over a 100% casualty rate. Everyone in the unit was wounded or killed
Lord bless this man... he has gone through the the firey furnace of combat and has earned all that this great full nation can give him.
This man is a Warrior. The true definition. Thank you sir.
I clicked onto this video just because, you are one of my generation who served in Viet Nam because I am part of that history from standpoint of being an Air Force Nurse, having met many @Tachikawa AFB, Japan & later having the honor as Flight Nurse bringing men like you home to Dover AFB. My eyeballs popped out when I spotted your MOH. Sir, thank you from bottom of my heart. I write this through my tears.
Thanks for your service, Carole

SFC Melvin Morris, thank you for your service and God bless you. You're a hero
They simply don't make men like this anymore. Thank you for keeping us free.
Yes. Men like him are not made. They/we are born with abilities civilians will never understand.
God-bless you always brave Patriot 🙏🇮🇪🇺🇲❤️
Blk Army Veteran here. 10th Mountain Divison in Baghdad/Abu Ghraib, Iraq in 05-06.
I salute you Mr. Morris. 💯 Thank you for your great courage and service. You are an example of true inspiration of and unwavering will of good men.❤
Marine combat vet ramadi Iraq government center 2007-8.....you’re a hero and a old head in our profession who us future warfighters looked up too because we had a hard bar to reach to keep up with those who came before us! Love you brother ! Always got your back!
A true patriot and warrior! Thank you sir!
No doubt about it Mr. Morris is a true American Hero and thank you sir for your service to our country!
A true hero. Continues his service by being there for others.
Selfless, brave and humble and loaded with integrity, dignity and honor!
I salute you and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Can you imagine fighting for a nation who at the time where basically half the nation or close to it and a whole region of the country views you as second class. Very commendable.
It’s a sad part of history, that ignorant people want removed.
The quality of life for the black family was way better back then.
All Americans had the highest standard of living in the world in the early 60's; so yeah we had every duty to fight, despite the "racism".
@@dallasryder8125 The sad part is that you don't realize that life was better (not perfect) for black folks back then. If I could get in a time machine and travel back to the early 60's, I'd go back in a heartbeat!!!!!!
Melvin Morris didn't make this a racial issue, why should you? He was recognized for the special human being that he is.
@@chriskenney4377 no he didn't, I made a statement, cause its a valid point and these are facts, good for him for not bringing it up those boys in the suck with him were his brothers NO matter the color of you. But some people in the south could have known he was a war hero back then and they still would have been "to the back of the bus with you", or you aint drinking or eating in this resturaunt, and if you can go sit in the shitty part of it Right next to the toilets, oh and you go to shittier schools then us, if you know the history of the Vietnam era south or Jim Crowe laws, you should realize this, I am no SJW, or someone who thinks todays blacks are so systemically oppressed like so many want to believe, just give "Burning Mississippi" a watch or "The Help" which is a newer movie and a bit more tame one, if you have never seen these movies, and countless other books and movies then tell me that. Also the "greatest generation" who I do have much respect and admiration for who fought in WW2 were the same 35 to 40 year old cops and politicians in the 60s south who propped up Jim Crowe laws, and beat protesters and sprayed them with water canons and staright lynched those men, boys, and even women.
This guy was in Mac V Sog. What a legend.
What a tough bastard! Some are doctors. Some own businesses. Some are born to fight. This man, was born to fight!
This unsung hero finally getting the recognition he massively deserved is amazing. It was an honor to hear your story.
Chills everywhere as soon as he said "I got to my weapon and I started fightin". This man deserves life more than all of us.
Definition of a warrior right there
Just a thought, what a distinguished looking man, honorable in his youth to say he knew he had to move up and on due to their no job status and possible wrong direction. God Bless Mr Melvin Morris.
A great man. It is a shame it took so long to be recognized. Well done Sir.
I would pay to see his story on the big screen, where are the movie directors, screenwriters and such, this is cinematic gold .
He just doesn't really fit. They could use his story, but replace his character and give him a jewish name and backstory.
And please don't be anti Semitic by saying this is a bad idea.
what a great idea.......he is what America stands for .....and his actions and demeanor present a role for each of us to emulate .....GREAT MOVIE !!!!

What a great man. Thank you sir for your service and for telling your story.
A story and a person who richly deserve to be better known.
There are still several SOG warriors out there who are deserving of the MoH and never got it due to the length of time their missions remained classified. Every one of them went above and beyond during the secret war, with over 100% casualties and 50 still MIA to this day.
Welcome home Mr. Morris. They lost their lives giving, not taking. Something to be remembered.
May you be blessed older warrior, all of your days,it was a honor to hear about your experience and sacrifice for freedom, blessings 🇺🇸

So many of these men wanted to emulate an older generation of their family. It is so important for this country to celebrate men like these.
Honoring those who lost their lives while GIVING NOT TAKING! That's powerful! Thank you for your service. It warms my heart to see a DV license plate, pull up next to them and Salut them.
