  • Combat Outpost Keating was a remote U.S. Army position in Afghanistan that attracted a Taliban attack nearly seven years ago. The medal that one of its defenders received for his actions that day still weighs heavily on Sgt. Clint Romesha, as David Martin now tells us.

But if saving Mace was the morale boost they needed to keep fighting and survive long enough for the cavalry to arrive then okay. Patriotism and duty and family and just staying alive are all good, but Mace was there in the same camp fighting for his life along with the other men next to you. You can see them with your eyes. Dear Lord, what a humble man. His heart is still so heavy with love for this friend that is spoken of, but I’m sure it’s not just one of his fallen friends, but all of them.
I’ve watched a lot of stories from soldiers and the one thing that stands out above all other, is the true bond that they have for one another. You can read it on their faces...they would take a bullet for each other . Such courage and bravery in the face of certain death.
When listening to these men tell their stories, it’s obvious they are completely devoted to their fellow men. They each put their lives on the line with no thought of self and certainly no thought of medals. No matter which side you come down on the subject of war, you have to admit that men like these are deserving of our respect.
My daddy fought in WWII and Korea. He said that he spent many nights in a freezing shallow hole with bullets flying over his head and he said the most important thing you had with you was the man in the hole beside you.
Men such as this man truly define the meaning of “HERO.”
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

There were many remote combat outposts like that during the early mid and late 2000s. They stopped using that tactic and resorted to strategically placing patrols that went out further from larger FOBs. The low ground combat outposts worked wonders in remote areas in Afghanistan, because it's very hard to place them at the peak of a mountain, and even then, the closest engagements would be 1200+ meters across a valley, making them ineffective.

I understand that sometimes in war you have to do things that aren't easy or the ideal choice, but to put this outpost where they did is mind boggling. Based on what I read in the book, every single man sent their new that it was a horrible location, and they new it was a matter of time before the Taliban attacked in large scale and our guys would get their asses handed to them. That is exactly what happened. They even predicted how the Taliban attack would play out, and it is exactly what would happen. What a failure on the higher ups part to send these men there.

I said this because I have friends in the military that talk to me about these sort of things. People don't seem to understand that these men had to go through some pretty traumatic experience to get labeled as such. It's kinda like how when someone dies in extreme combat and receives a medal of honor it's kinda pointless because you know, their dead. Receiving that medal doesn't help the grieving family it just makes things worse.
These soldiers will always see this as just part of their job and nothing else. That was my point. He doesn't think of himself as a hero because if he did that would mean hes putting himself at a higher mantle then all the other soldiers he was with who fought just as hard as him.

None of them ever thought they were just doing their job - that mindset won't get you through anything - the reasons might vary, but men who fight without reasons are not fighting - they are just surviving.
Civilians know next nothing about valor or courage, except what some politician or teacher has told them ... none of which have any credibility in such matters and who's thoughts, therefore, do not warrant any serious consideration.

Well they tend to only care about what people want to see. Jake Tapper, the Whitehouse correspondent for CNN is making a movie about it that is so untrue and disrespectful to these guys it's sickening. Mace is my brother. This film needs to be stopped!

I mean this with the utmost respect to the men who fought and died and lived through this event. I would like to see this story told through a hollywood camera lens, but with military accuracy to the fact-Not hollywood flare.
Stories such as this one need not be forgotten by the masses.
I know this is little consolation, but I thank you all for you service and my freedom.

Hollywood always fks it up, embellishing and fabricating to make war into some kind of glorious thing, and invent hero's out of nothing. They always send the wrong message. The story here is these guys were put in an unwinnable situation, and more would have die were it not for a decision to mount a counter attack, and due to their loyalty to each other.

I wish I had half the courage these young guys had. I served and saw action, but remember wholeheartedly being scared out of my mind. I just figured I wasnt gonna be much help other than maybe catching a round that could take out one of the heros. Resigned to my fate of depriving the enemy of one more bullet, i did what I could, but have always looked at everyone else as the only reason I made it home.

I have lost brothers and felt the sting of losses.... but the continuing feeling of pain ..... keeps me alive.... THEY DIED,..... SO I CAN BE HERE!.....

A hero carrying the weight forever. Thank you for your service. The only thing that bothers me about interviews like this is that the reporters asking the questions usually seem like vultures to me...trying to elicit responses that will make the interviewee tear up and get emotional...all to try to get higher ratings for the show. It almost always seems predatory to me.

Unless you have trained with, laughed with and fought together as soldiers you could never truly know what a bond with another person or group of people can be formed. You become more than friends, more than family. When you are sent into battle you serve your country, but you fight for and at times die for each other. There is no greater honor, no greater love than for soldiers who defend their country and fight for their brothers and sisters. If everyone on earth could feel for each other and take care of each other the way that soldiers do there would be no war and no need for soldiers to fight and die. In this soldier's eyes you can see both the pain that he feels about the loss of his brothers, and at the same time see the pride and the honor he feels for having served with them. Many of them spend the rest of their lives giving thanks for having made it back home alive, and yet feel guilty for having made it when some of their brothers and sisters did not. It's a joy and a pain that only a soldier can know. I pray that when the men and women who make it out of situations like this die that God reunites them with their fallen so that they can be together again in a place where there is no more death, and no more tears for them.
