  • Today I'm joined by my friend Holly to talk about common misconceptions and mistakes surrounding exposure. Many people are unaware of the true nature of exposure and how it actually works as part of the anxiety recovery process. Lets clear up a few things.

And if this helps someone in any shape way or form i think my biggest mistake and take away from this video is when they say do nothing and let the anxiety pass (adrenaline) pass thrrough your body.. my biggest mistake was clinching. Whether it be gripping or biting down on my jaw and getting ready for anxiety Adrenaline to oass through i would clinch and tighten up which brought tons of side effects. ..racing heart blurring eyes tingling dizziness etc. I hope that can someone help someone. Stop that clinching reaction and just relax the body and really do nothing. I always thought doing nothing meant its ok to hold on tight and be prepared for whats gonna happen but no that is doing something and its reminding your brain that it needs more adrenaline. I hope that could somehow help someone else someway.

You two are fabulous. I wrote a comment on Facebook to Holly that I have watched all the videos of you and Holly several times in the middle of the night when my anxiety is the worst, and it's like you two are my friends. The middle of the night when it's dark and quiet seems to be the worst cuz it's difficult to distract myself. Holly, I am a musician that used to play in groups but I never conquered my stage fright and I am so proud to see that you have conquered attacks and are continuing. I teach piano and try not to let my students get scared (although they do know I haven't mastered that and I am 65 now). I am so grateful to find you guys on CZcams and recently I found you on Facebook. Love you! (On Facebook my name is Irene March. My real name is Penny Marsh)

Holly you said you are still having panic attacks? I thought you were healed? There must be some rewiring in the pathways that still needs to be rewritten. Great video tho, I trust you what you say because you have been threw all of this shit for 20 years. You should make your own videos like anxitey guy you would be great doing videos your knowledge is priceless Holly and anxitey guys knowledge is also priceless. Anxitey guy knows his shit to he's been threw it all. Keep up the great work you 2. Helping me on the daily.

Hey Drew and Holly -- first of all I can't thank you enough for creating these videos. It's a very generous act. Secondly, I'm on board with the exposure -- the need to feel the panic and do nothing to try and make it better. My question is this: I hear a lot about belly breathing, mindfulness, and other things you can do to alleviate the panic. But wouldn't those things be considered "doing something"? In my case, during a panic attack I start catastrophizing and it of course makes the anxiety even worse. I know that "staying in the moment" helps to quiet the thoughts, but isn't that effort to quiet my thoughts kind of like running back to my safe zone?

I think the big issue is "alleviate the panic". There are really only three things to do. Relax your body, breathe, and train your focus where you want it rather than on the sensations and thoughts. None of those things are designed to alleviate panic or make it go away. I think thats where things get confusing for most people, as they are still looking at these things as "how to stop a panic attack".
