  • Float. Accept. Wilfully tolerate. All reasonable bits of advice when it comes to how to deal with anxiety and panic. But I prefer a different term. SURRENDER. Let’s talk about this on the 13th episode of Recovery Monday! (Spoiler alert: surrender is not a bad thing in this situation).
    These sessions are lessons directly out of my recovery guide - The Anxious Truth.

    Surrender is actually my favourite word. It was actually the title of my Masters degree. For me, it means not resisting. When I surrender to my panic that way, it does seem to pass through me, like a wave. Very helpful.

    When I had to drive from NC to FL I spent most of the time listening to Claire Weeks on my Audible but I also was screaming at my anxiety. LOL! F you anxiety! I got out so much frustration. Glad no one was in the car with me. LOL! I will try surrender now and let it pass. When Claire talks about floating I think she is actually talking about floating like a cloud. Some people are afraid of water. Some compare it to floating over a wave. I guess whatever resonates with you. The less attention we give it, the smaller it will get. Thanks for all you do Drew. I am grateful.

    I'm glad you emphasized that this is not a spiritual or existential problem. There is entirely too much advice out there from people who have no experience with anxiety, the science behind it or how to properly address it.

  • @letsgoBrandon204

    I think this is precisely why so many people with anxiety feel shame about it. Because they know they have been unable to approach their fear and they recognise that it's a silly thing to be afraid of.
    Why the hell do I avoid walking over there just because that person will see me?! I must be a loser for not being able to do THAT!
    I find it incredibly difficult and uncomfortable to make eye contact with people. I reflexively look away. I wonder if that's because I can't stand to look them in the eye because I don't want them to see what a pathetic person I am.

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 2 lety +3

      There's a lot of insight in this comment. The beliefs we have about ourselves can sometimes be obstacles to learning recovery lessons. When we see ourselves as broken or less than we can often struggle to accept any positive outcome at all. Everything gets twisted into "I shouldn't have this problem to begin with" or similar themes. You are NOT a pathetic loser.

  • @j_si97
    @j_si97 Před 4 měsíci

    Hello Sir, thanks for your great videos and podcasts, they have really convinced me to change my mindset on anxiety and panic attacks and how to confront them. if it is ok for you, I have a question about your symptoms, did you experience high blood pressure during panic or anxiety episodes? how high was that? my current problem is, I always afraid of my bp going high enough to cause a stroke or heart attack or going down and make me faint! and I'm only 27 and also went to a cardiologist and usually for all anxiety sufferers all the tests came out normal and fine!

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Note that you went to an actual cardiologist who tested you directly, but want to ask a person on CZcams about their blood pressure. Chronic and disordered anxiety is like this. I could give you 1000 words about my personal experience with blood pressure and the odds are pretty high that it would throw my words away in a day or two and demand that you ask someone else about their blood pressure. I'm more helpful in pointing out this never ending cycle than quoting my blood pressure numbers, which are largely irrelevant in this conversation anyway (even though your anxiety will insist that I'm wrong about this).

      @j_si97 Před 3 měsíci

      @TheAnxiousTruth thanks for the reply. I totally agree with you on the fact. But when I'm in an anxious mode, it drives me so mad to know about everyone experiences with the symptoms. I found out that some people have symptoms that are not my top concerns or even I'm not dealing with them and vice versa. Thanks to your videos and guidance I know that the symptoms don't matter, and I should not dig into everyone symptoms, I must focus on anxiety itself and get on a correct and useful mindset and path that will lead to accepting anxiety and make it less impactful! Thanks again for your videos, mindset, and prospective on anxiety treatment they have been really helpful to me 🫡

      The Monday livestreams are only here on CZcams. I monetize very little of the content here while spending quite a few hours creating it. I do my best to not let CZcams get overzealous with this stuff (they can be overbearing) but sometimes things do get a little out of hand. I don't disagree with you on that!

  • @Atom_Stone
    @Atom_Stone Před 5 měsíci

    This hits home, 100%. Yesterday morning I was so frustrated with my latest physical symptoms that I had that response; "That's right! Yep! I'm f**ked. I'm a dead man, go ahead, etc." I actually overcame cardio phobia this way. After many weeks of being too afraid to exercise, I thrusted myself into an intense cardiovascular training program. "If I die on this treadmill, SO BE IT." Eventually, there was no longer any way my rational mind could BELIEVE anything was wrong with my heart, considering what I was able to do. Got back into great cardio shape in the process.
    Unfortunately, my mind outsmarted me and "found" physical sensations that I associate (via Google, etc) with illness that is much harder to disprove.

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 5 měsíci +2

      When you've gotten all the practical "proof" and there can't be any more no matter how hard you look, you're left with the same moment of choice that you faced with the heart-focused fear. Try framing it as "suffering in the right direction" (stolen from Allegra Kastens). "If I stop everything and try to disprove this health problem, I suffer. If I don't do that, I suffer because I worry. Which suffering moves me in the direction I want to go."

    I know this is an older video, but when it comes to surrender.As you feel the anxiety coming on.Do you stop what you're doing and sit with it?Or do you continue doing what you're doing

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Both. Depends on the context. Sometimes you might choose to stop and literally sit with it, or you might decide to continue to engage as best you can with whatever is going on around you at the time. There is no wrong answer to this. Just be mindful of trying to run away from it in some way.

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před rokem +1

      Start from the earliest episodes of the podcast to get the foundation of what this is all about. Or consider reading The Anxious Truth. First, get an understanding of the basic principle that you CAN surrender because being afraid is not always the same as being in danger. This is hard for many people to even consider at first, but you have to look into that before you can think about surrendering. Know why we do it, and know why its actually safe to do it even when its scary. Those are the places to start.
