The Worst Historical Dolls American Girl Has Ever Made

  • Here is a list created by my Instagram followers and my own opinions about some of the worst Historical American Girl Dolls.
I already know the comment section will be controversial... but I hope you all can listen to what I say in the video and understand I'm not always bashing the doll as a whole, just a small part of their story, collection, appearance etc. Feel free to share your own opinions on this topic in the comment section, but please be polite about it.
No historical doll is perfect and with so many that have been created, the bar is so high when creating a character in terms of their story, appearance and collection that some dolls do it better then others, therefore they are better dolls overall.

I highly suggest you read all of the historical books. I feel like if you don’t read the books, you can never truly appreciate each doll as intended. Courtney’s stories are fantastic. I feel like her mom running for mayor is not really the main plot. She, as I did, lived through the Challenger disaster, experienced Hands Across America, and had a good friend with AIDS during the AIDS crisis. I wasn't expecting Felicity on here. Her stories are some of my favorites of the American Girl line. Her stories are about how as she matured she was beginning to understand the political polarization around her and she had to learn how to deal with the fact her friends and family couldn't get along with one another because of differing political beliefs. Especially since people were willing to die for these beliefs. Her books show how this manifests in generational divides and wealth divides and how not everyone believes the same thing just because they are on the same side of the political spectrum. I don't see how this is boring. I don't really get how 1774-1776 is boring either. This was the height of the American Revolution before the War for independence started. The conflict of your family members hardly being able to be civil towards one another because of political opinions and you as a kid being caught in the middle I would have assumed would resonate more with people in todays political environment. Maybe its just that Felicity's personality isn't very unique? She's spunky and spirited and a horse girl. Kinda what you expect from an American revolution era series. Or maybe me being an American history nerd makes me see it differently. Also Elizabeth is really awesome in her book. She is a trickster and she destroys her sister's engagement.
Of the original three American girl dolls I always found Molly to be the most boring. I find her to be more spoiled than Samantha who IS super rich. This is especiallly evident if you read Happy Birthday Molly which features Molly saying some pretty tone deaf things to Emily whose suffering from ptsd. And I think Samantha has a better design. Samantha's books are a tad bit boring I'll admit. Her movie isn't because it focuses mostly on Book 6 which is when Samantha goes to live in New York City. Also I think it should be obvious why Samantha is the main character and not Nellie. Most characters American Girl designs are not average. Most all of them are upper middle class or upper class. Its easier to make collections for the upper class than the lower class. Especially in the pre 1900s characters.
This also is probably why Kaya barely has a collection. Realistically Kaya wouldn't have had that many different outfits. If American girl tried to make a big collection for her it would have gotten costumey. Thus we have a few dresses that are like what she would have actually worn. And a dress based off the Pow Wow each year.
Damn this got long but I will not stand for this Felicity slander.

    • @Moonlitwatersofaqua
      @Moonlitwatersofaqua Před 3 lety +11

To be honest I always found Molly to be more spoiled, if you could call it that, than Samantha. I mean when Samantha gave her brand new doll to Nellie she wouldn't even dare ask her grandmother for a new one because she knew how much her grandmother had spent on her. Molly meanwhile does a ton of insensitive things throughout her books, like constantly asking for a fancy halloween costume and the sort. This becomes especially evident when Emily is living with her. You can also compare Samantha to Felicity. Felicity's family owned slaves and she doesn't ever really think about that reality and what that means. Samantha meanwhile becomes invested in the plight Nellie and other children suffer from in extreme poverty. Samantha may be the aristocrat, but shes more attentive to the circumstances of the people around her than other characters in this series. This isn't meant to put down Molly or Felicity. Its just an observation about what Samantha is like as a person.

@@Moonlitwatersofaquato be fair it’s more realistic to have Felicity not think about it. At her home they had only 2 slaves who were pretty much working in the house and at her father’s store. At first I thought the 80s seemed too recent, but technically, there was a similar gap between Molly's time period and the time she was released. Maybe 80s trends are more popular now than 40s trends were then, and that makes it feel different?

I can guarantee PC/Mattel had no inclination that adults would be harshly critiquing dolls made for young girls. I can agree with the redundant use of face molds, no clothing for many historicals, as well as, lack of depth in stories but once again these dolls are for the young and should be treated as such. When the Pleasant Company released the first dolls in the 80's it had only been 35 ish years since Molly's timeline. The idea was for the dolls to start intergenerational conversations, so your comment about asking your parents what it was like to live in the 80s would have made Pleasant Rowland proud that they've introduced a doll from that decade for this generation.

I have Josefina and her collection from its initial release in 1997. I learned a lot from her books and collection. Dolls that have been around this long do have a large collection. People just have to buy it second hand. Mattel has cubed a lot of their older dolls.
I have part of Courtney’s collection for my CYO. I was a child in the 1970’s and a teenager in the 1980’s. Courtney’s first book is about the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986. This happened in my senior year of high school. Her second book is based on the story of a real teenager named Ryan White. He was an early case of AIDS and had to fight school discrimination for his disease. Both topics are relevant to the time period. After the release of the 35th Anniversary dolls, I realized that Courtney is a part of that 35th Anniversary.
My least favorite historical dolls: Felicity, Caroline. More into Julie and Courtney’s stuff than the dolls. Like Kira, but too overdone in videos to be interested in her books.
Love Josefina, Molly, Nanea, Kit, Addy, Melody, Kirsten…

i think where AG messed up with Maryellen was that her attention-seeking personality kind of implied the idea that the 50s were a time of tons of kids since the war had just ended, but they never actually add that to the story in a way that was meaningful or educational. Actually, they do that a lot in her stories if you think about it.

I think Courtney is largely cashing in on the '80s nostalgia that began in the late '90s and never went away.
I love her, but I don't think they ever got Julie's collection quite right, either. They have always depended on period cliches, or dressed her in a way more consistent with the late 1960s (remember that Go-Go Girl monstrosity?!). Mary Ellen is even worse as far as cliches with her poodle skirt and diner and jukebox.

i wish felicity's dress showed more of the unique features that robe à la française dresses had
being the historical fashion nerd i am i thought she was wearing robe a l'anglaise which is the fashion that was used it the 1780s
while robe à la française was for the 1770s
you may not think its to much of a difference but think of it like this
if someone was wearing a dress from the 60s and told you it was from the 70s you would criticize them on their knowledge of historical fashion
i guess its just me being nitpicky on the historical aspect but it just bugged me about felicity

On top of the 80s story premise being low-stakes, it’s also not unique to the time period. Like it could’ve just as easily taken place today. What I like about the historical dolls is they take real events kids learn about in school and make them interesting in a way that actually teaches lessons too. (I say this as if I know anything about the dolls having only seen one of the movie adaptations lol)

Addy's story is able to be as high stakes as it is because her timeline is so far removed from our own. What would the high stakes narrative be for a doll from more recent decades? The Women's Rights Act? LGBTQ rights? Income inequality? You or I might be very pleased to see dolls/characters invested in these situations, but A LOT of AG's customer base would start a revolt. When the Addy doll released, the country was pretty much united in the understanding that slavery was wrong. Similar issues of recent decades have the furthest thing from consensus.

Not me going on an AG binge on CZcams and finding this video 2 years late. But I wanted to mention that Kaya likely didn't have a large collection on purpose. Native Americans of her time wouldn't have had a closet full of clothing for every single occasion, which sets her apart from dolls with European influence. Unfortunately that attention to detail does in fact mean she's likely to be less popular amongst collectors who want to have a world built out that includes accessories and outfits.

I think Courtney’s second book is about the AIDS epidemic and the first book is more about the Space Challenger explosion. You’re right though that her story is kinda blah. And her video shows Crystal Starshooter outfit yet AG has not released it. Also I don’t like that Courtney’s collection is mostly mix and match. I like the whole boxed outfit with shoes. I did buy Courtney’s pac Mac arcade and it plays just like the big arcade game so very worth the $. I wonder if Courtney will have a birthday dress?
Julie’s Christmas fireplace set is not accurate because her Santa list has a book bag on it. Not at all a 70s item. And Julies meet outfit is not the greatest. It does look like a costume instead of authentic. The 70s had more earth tones not bright yellow
I think Julie is my least favorite but I do love some of her collection like the flower power bathroom.
