- permies.com The first honor system farm stand is at Inspiration Farm in Bellingham, Washington. Brian Kerkvliet gives us the tour. He's selling plant starts in the spring and the full array of produce as everything comes on. He says that the stand next to the road is, at the very least, generating curiosity. People are stopping just to check it out. He talks about the idea of potting up plants that he finds on his property that he doesn't want like stinging nettles or black locust trees.
Brian says that he hasn't had any problems with vandalism or theft.
Next I visit with Karen Biondo of la Biondo Farm and Kitchen on Vashon Island, Washington. She says that she used to keep all the money stuff in an open tackle box so people could make change. Twice in one year the money was stolen, but that still works out to be not a big deal. A neighbor made her an industrial strength cash box which has eliminated the theft problem.
She has something called "pay it forward farm bucks" as an alternative to making change.
She has garbage cans for keeping potatoes.
I like the free basket. I think it would be neat to have a free shed where people can drop off free stuff and pick up free stuff. Maybe ask folks to put a buck in to haul off old free stuff.
The final stop is at Langley Fine Gardens. Little Jamie has been peristant throughout the day about feeding tennis balls to the chicken. Jamie's mom, Anna Olive has been awesome at taking me around vashon island to see lots of cool things. The bottom line is that the tennis balls with the chicken is a brilliant way to build business - especially with any family with little kids that have seen the tennis ball chicken.
Jamie puts the tennis ball in and we follow where it goes.
Langley has lots of plants starts available when we stop by. Leda Menser-Langley tells me about how they used to have a money box, but had some tiny theft. And then came up with the chicken thing due to concerns about possible future theft. So customers put the money in the tennis ball and then send it down the tube. Leda explains that she feels discomfort at farm stands with messages like "please don't steal from us" - as if they are accusing her of being the thief.

A local potter in Spring City Utah does this with all of his pottery. One weekend he went on a trip and he forgot to close up shop. When he came back, almost every piece in his entire shop had been taken (several months to a year worth of work). When he went to the back of his shop and found his money pot was literally overflowing with cash. Not one piece was unpaid for.
Turns out a tourist bus came by the shop and they snatched up everything.
Good to know there are decent people in the world.
All of these farm stands were inviting, artistic and fun. That does make a big difference in the experience and encouraging folks to stop. Even some losses to theft are less than hiring staff or spending time at a farmers market, so I suppose that's a pretty worthwhile tradeoff. Here's wishing them all continued success this year!
I love how everyone knows you, this seems like a really fun place to live. 🥰
me too! every time i start feeling the worlds negativity closing in on me,i always seem to stumble across something like this video, that helps to restore a little of my hope and love for my earth family.
It is nice when ppl can take a chance and grant some trust toward one another. Beautiful!
When I visited Salt Spring Island, BC Canada, they had several of these throughout the island. My wife and I bought from several of them...a great system
I love the way she stores her potatoes so smart! new follower- excited to do my own farmstead this summer!
I did this back in 1970's in the summer.
I would sale watermelons in the front yard.
one day I wanted to go swimming but I still wanted to make money.
I put out 10 watermelons and some other produce.
put a bucket out with a hole in the top.
came back that afternoon 7 watermelons was sold. look into
the money bucket all was there even some extra with a note saying
that "I did not have change, I will be back tomorrow after for it,: which
the lady did and I gave her the change
That was really fun! Thanks! In my neighborhood everything would be gone in 5 minutes. Including the shed and plant stands. lol
It's really nice that you are able to do that where you live. Thanks for sharing, Roosevelt
I love the tennis ball idea! It's not a nice shopping experience when you see all these warnings.
This solution actually is just like the theme park in my country where you put your trash in the mouth of a stone 'man', it gets sucked in and the man says 'thank you'. Children are actually asking for and looking for stuff to throw away, and the park looks spotless, without having to ask.
I live in nj a neighbor of mine grows huge garden every yr he sets up a table and puts up sign and a box 4 money best beefsteaktomatoes ever!!! so nice that pepole can be honest and the whole neigborhood looks out for him it's really cool all of our freind's take the kids with just to teach the honesty lesson kid's get it!!! teach love !!!!
Love the tennis ball idea!!!!
The Foghorn Leghorn idea is great.
I really like this idea! I hope it spreads all over!
This is absolutely beautiful!
Nice! I would probably have a wreck trying to turn around quick enough to get to this if I was to see this in Texas! What a GREAT idea.
I have a honor system farm stand and for the most part people seem to pay & pay the correct amount. Every now & then someone will take fruit/vegetables without paying, but i haven't caught anyone stealing money out of the bucket. I do like the tennis ball & chicken idea though.
great to see the family, yet again more fantastic Ideas, thanks again Paul :)
love all of it... wish the whole world worked like this!
Great idea! best wishes. I think the majority of people wouldn't dream of doing wrong!
This is way cool and I love the pink shirt.
"Evidence that there might be RATS!!!!!!!"
These videos are great, Paul.

I liked the fierce guard Dogs
it's a shame that we have to lockup things in lockboxes and people still seem to think stealing is okay. good thing some are still honest individuals.
the tennis ball idea is soooooo neat!! kinda fun just to do lol
great video. Thanks a bunch! I have a pop-up camper I am going to turn into a mobile stand like these.
Love the tennis balls! Won't work with our stand/property set up. Going to offer etransfer and likely a cash box with frequent emptying. We have many retired neighbors who'll have a birds eye view of the stand so that may help too;)
these are very common in Kentucky during apple/pumpkin seasons. it works well but you will loose a bit.
Great stuff Paul.
Great Idea. Wish I lived near you.
Entertaining and informative film. Fun way to shop.
Thats perty cool man, good ideal for good people.! thank you
Pretty cool!
I wish I lived nearby unfortunate im so near a major city now that the farms in distance just cannot do this and the cost per is much higher =( Back when we lived in Northern WI there was a local farmer who sold similar and had just a can out Im guessing for most part people were trust worthy and paid seeing this farmer did it year after year Oh how I miss the acorn squash 4/$1 in season YUM! Thanks for sharing. Good Luck & God Bless.
Thanks for sharing...the chicken tennis ball system is great idea. :-)
this is really cool
When did Langley move to Vashon Island? Last time I was there it was on Whidbey. Don't get me wrong I love both.
I live in Langley and I was just thinking that
Surprised to find one in back roads of Maine !!
So cool.
I love the hungry chicken cashier system
very, very cool
Have seen this same trust in North Carolina mountains
If these Farm Stands aren't part of CSA they should so the locals can easily find them. Every State has a Community supported agriculture (CSA).
What is community supported agriculture? Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. ~God Bless~
I love this. wont work in las vegas...trust me on that..LOL.
Nobody with a brain thinks they're being abused of stealing if there's a lock box. It's pretty obvious why you'd need it.
nice
I have to say, I love having a video featuring these simple systems for small farmers, and seeing how people go about it... However, the camera work is so sloppy in parts its hard to watch and I wish your voice was more subdued and thoughtful instead of booming and snarky. It really detracts from what is otherwise an important video. Your voice really dominates what we want to hear and your comments don't contribute to the content. That said, I've enjoyed your videos overall quite a bit!
EdibleAcres OMG.....you are basically saying he and his video is garbage....but you really enjoy the videos?! Nuts.
I agree, he was so obnoxious and kinda rude pointing out the rat trap and loud
I am usually easily turned off, easily, but I enjoyed the entire video...I hope to find ideas for locals who get robbed.
that's a great idea.
don The fatbeeman
@FreidasGarden haha..me too.
@bugtrailer LOL yes! :P
thot she was gonna say he made some bear traps
I know someone that does this with her extra eggs
Yeah he is most definitely the guy that stole that woman's stuff
b
Sell weed clones and retire at 60!
Why dont you see more of these in black neighborhoods?
+Jerry Reed How would you know what exists in black neighborhoods?
