MKB fires up one in a "blink and you'll miss it" moment in his recent video about his visit to Disney to check the 360 floor.
Yup. One thing I noticed is it looks pretty flimsy; but it makes sense if it's a retractable plastic like material.
@@Yasin33 its probably something like the invis "glass" which bends light around it so you cant see whats standing behind it, with neopixel led strip inside and cause of the properties of this invis glass it makes it so that it all looks uniform with the retractable blade but thats just a guess cause its a bit flimsy and everyone is handling it real soft
I really think they improved the design!! That blade definitely looks longer, and completely retracts into the hilt. 👍🏻

Something you said made me think OLED TV. You know, the ones that roll down into their stands?
You do realize this is just a tape measure with lights on it, right? It can't be used in a swordfight because if you hit anything with it, it will simply bend over (try extending your tape measure and then hitting anything with it). That's why Rey brings it out, turns it on, and then puts it on the floor and swaps it with a "real" non-extending saber for the actual sword fight.
They don't sell it because it can't actually be used as a sword. It's simply an effect.

Eventually this will hit the market. This is probably their first prototype that was good enough to show off, when Disney sees how many people want to have sabers like these they will probably bring it to market for a very expensive price.

Of course they will end up mass producing it. WAY WAY too high of a demand to ignore. Like with everything else they just need some time to work out the bugs and get it reliable enough for market. 25 years ago when the prequels started coming out, we would not have expected lightsabers to be much more than the plastic toy versions of that time. However the resurgence of excitement among the Star Wars fans of my generation, coupled with a whole new generations discovery of Star Wars. Created a HUGE market demand for higher quality and more realistic Star Wars merchandise. And now there is even a third generation of fans coming onboard with all the new movies and shows being made since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. Also remember that Star Wars fans are the type of fans willing to spend quite a bit on it . And since SO many of them are adults, they have the means to as well. We certainly know Disney is not the only ones working on this, just look at how many other companies are making high quality lightsabers already. So if Disney does not iron this out somewhat quickly, another company will absolutely beat them to market. I think it is safe to say that lightsabers are the most sought-after pieces of Star Wars merchandise.

@@andrewkindle1856 I wouldn't say "of course"..... demand, yes. But can they make it profitable? If they designed it to be CONVINCING (which, clearly it is), then it makes sense that it could both be very expensive and fragile at the same time. Only a limited number of trained people would have access to it (like performers at disney world).... but that doesn't mean they will ever be able to produce it cheaply enough to make it a viable commercial product. For all we know, those "prototypes" cost $10,000 each, they're super easy to break, and they haven't been able to reduce costs yet. That is not a viable commercial product, sadly.
Having said all that.... would love to just be able to check one out myself, seems like it'd be the ultimate for any star wars fan.
@@JerseyJester Yes, I imagine the prototypes would be up there in cost. However just like the pharmaceutical companies where the cost of each pill is maybe 40 cents, but the first pill cost $40 million. I'm going to remain optimistic that they'll be able to get the cost down enough to make it marketable. And like I said before these kinds of fans are usually willing to spend top dollar for their collections. I believe if they can get the retail cost down to $300 to $500 it will sell quite well.
Hacksmith is going to finish making the portable version of his real lightsaber before Disney ever releases this. 😂

the Hacksmiths lightsaber wouldn’t make a good display piece or toy/collectors toy, and wouldn’t make a good weapon either, it’s perfect for making youtube videos with thou

If Disney does end up selling it my expectations are pretty low considering their galaxy’s edge lightsabers. But I’m sure other companies will step in and make it amazing. I would love something like that

I'm hoping the brightness is at least on par with Neopixel but my oh my they've done it and it's fully retractable. YES!!! THIS IS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
The only modification I'd like to see is Disney just getting the Hilt less chucky if so this would be the closest thing we'd have to a REAL light saber(not counting hacksmith or similar projects more like the proto saber still ridiculously cool) just imagine the Choreography that could be done with these, not to mention the improved version other companies could make.

I was part of the Starcruiser opening team and I got to hold it and it was revolutionary... It did have a decent weight but not overly heavy, was as bright as a neopixel, but was kinda thick.

6:15 "it doesn't have a lighter and a darker side" yet clearly, we see the edge of the lightsaber facing the letter J is softer than the extreme white bright of the other side of the lightsaber.
Isn't that because white absorbs blue? White should reflect it?

there's literally a video of him starting it up with one hand right after he says, they told me I can only start it twice😂
Uses polyphonic plastic, basically a balloon that only expands to a pre formed shape, which makes it seamless, also uses xenon gas as the the source to fill the saber n LEDs for the lighting. The handle is so big because it holds all that gas

I wondered why they never did a type of really thin plastic with some type of things inside to hold the shape as it comes out and retracts but honestly I think since they are so serious about making it happen that doing something like that would just be a side step to only put off the main goal
About the date of the video, it couldve been shot during a reveal or something to do with Jedi Survivor as a poster of it is in the background, so it could be taken place during February-April of 2023

I had 2 FX lights sabers when they1st came that i was going to hand down to my kids someday. I forgot to take the batteries out of them to store them away and both handles blew up with battery acids. I was extremely sad. I wish a could get my hands on them again.

My guess is it's something like an inflatable hose with it's air compressor placed in the hilt. This could be the reason why the hilt is so big and heavy. it's working principle could be similar to that of a vine robot. Veritasium channel has a video about that titled This Unstoppable Robot Could Save Your Life

I think it’s pretty obvious that they wanna release this product to the world because of the fact that this is not something that has been done before in this way, where it basically film accurate to how it looks and behaves without it being an actual plasma sword

What's ridiculous is misspelling ridiculous. If that was just your error, I'm totally 100% cool with it, it happens all the time, but if that was his actual caption... I start questioning a lot of things (particularly if he's involved somehow). Also, you know Disney isn't the only one working on this, they're just the most funded. Everything is one upped at some point. Lastly, I loathe using the term "real lightsaber" it's not real, so Disney shouldn't market it as such. They can certainly say, it's the most realistic functioning prop because really that's what all these lightsabers are. A "real" lightsaber (if invented) and available for sale would accidentally kill a billion people because we're not ready for such a responsibility. I'd love to own one though!

LOOK AT THE GIRTH. God that's ugly. That is probably why its not public yet. They have to get that down to a prop scale and then, not to mention the ignition looked way too slow.

Another non-canon Disney nightmare. It's too expensive for most Star Wars fan to afford, and it's just not that great. The 1999 Hasbro lightsaber is a much better choice for 99% of fans.
