  • In this video I will show you how to backup your Home Assistant snapshots automatically to the cloud using Google Drive and an awesome community add-on called Home Assistant Google Drive Backup. I will show you how to install and configure the add-on as well as how to automatically notify if it stops working.

    I currently use the "Auto Backup" integration in HACS which allows for smart backup retention. I then have a node-red flow which calls this service to create snapshots regularly (or upon request). I then run a daily script on my file server (separate box) which mirrors the snapshot directory from my Hassio box over to my RAID array. This is then also included in my daily (with smart retention) backup offsite to OneDrive (at the moment, in the process of deploying a RPi-driven offsite backup that I control at a family member's house) using Duplicati. Seems overkill but then it's the same backup solution I use for my irreplaceable files and projects already.

  • @burner37
    @burner37 Před 2 lety +2

    Thanks for the great video! There is one important thing that was not mentioned in the video that would have avoided me some troubles:
    Be careful if like me you are using the Plex add-on with all your files saved in the 'media' directory.
    In the add-on settings you should activate 'Partial Backups' and deselect the 'media' directory. Otherwise the add-on will try to backup everything.
    I ended up with a temporary directory in the 'tmp' directory that filled up the whole ssd. Since there was not enough space left the back up failed and Home Assistant was not functioning properly anymore (could not assess remotely,...).

    Hey guys! I installed this integration and it works good so far. My problem is, when I try to restore the backup (because e.g. nothing works anymore) I use the following way: I put the HA image on my micro sd card and install the google backup directly. I connect ot my google-account and restore the last backup back to HA. Now the problem is, that it doesn't restore the old "setup" sompletely, because the e.g. integration "nodered" doesnt work anymore. The system shows up the error 502 again (I know there is a workaround to solve the 502 problem, but I don't want to put so much effort on setting up my HA again. It just shall be perfectly done by just restoring the google drive backup.) But that is definitly not happen, or am I doing something wrong??

    Thanks for video. As a raw newby there are a couple of things I am not clear on. Firstly, I have Google Drive set up. But say I lose HA totally, if say my microSD card on the RPI fails. Before I start to do the backup I assume I will have to put a new HA instance on my replacement SD card. But to do a full recovery do I then have to install all the ADD ONs I previously had on my old HA, on the new HA, before I then try to do a full restoral from Google Drive. Or will the Google Drive snapshot do this for me. Final question , will my new HA instance be linked to Google Drive automatically or will I have to do this myself.

For example, I have a manually installed docker/container called Home Bridge that I installed with portainer. I don't see that Home Bridge installation in the add-on list. Will that be backed up as well? Why is my backup so small? Does the backup take all the sql/sensor history and all the manually added addons etc?

    The last time I was successful restoring a backup was probably more than a year ago. I've never HAD to restore, but just doing it to verify that my restore does actually work. But in doing so, I discovered that restoring a backup always breaks my HA and it just simply won't boot. I had to resort to backing up using the Linux dd command, which works flawlessly because it backs up the whole SSD partition. I stopped using the backup several months ago because of this breakage. When was the last time you attempted a restore and was successful?

    • @JohnMacGuy
      @JohnMacGuy Před rokem

      I did a Restore yesterday from a settings Backup. It is a little scary since there is no information of where it is in the process. My backups are about 200MB, so it takes a while to process and start. My suggestion is to wait until you see the normal restart notifications on the screen. The BIG surprise was that HA comes up with a ton of stuff unavailable! Turns out Zigbee needs to reestablish the network of devices...and this can take a while. Just have to be patient. You will probably see the devices closest to the controller coming on first. After that everything worked fine.
