i have a non XT 5700 and truth be told, i find it hard to justify buying a new card due to how well it performs. it still consumes max 185 watts without an undervolt (mine is a DD Ultra variant that from factory are pushing XT clocks, Therefore, it may be one of the contributing factors to its higher consumption) i managed to retain 96% of the performance at 140 watts. i could have done significantly better if i was more knowledgable regarding sufficient clocks and voltages.

Thanks for this nice roundup, i basically come to the same conclusions as you do.
I would add something to the test, someone that is interested in some casual gaming while still having some power... those 5940HS are pretty impressive and a mini PC cost like ... 600$ (32Go, 1Gb SSD, 5940HS), this can be a nice solution in some particulare cases, like mine .. i'm off grid and the 5940HS full power is something like 175W for pretty interesting cpu/graphic power.
Appart from those mini PC, the 6700XT is still my favorite, fair price.. good performer.

It's kinda nuts just how many price points AMD controls for value. It's a shame that the RTX 40 series just isn't decent value. The 4070 looks good though with it's price cuts, and the 4090's a monster if you've got the cash to burn. I didn't realise how the used market is shaping up as well, the RTX 30 series might be lacking VRAM but it makes a lot of sense at current pricing, and I didn't realise the 3090 had dropped that much too.

As my computer use has changed over the years, I'm thinking of going over to the AMD Radeon 7900 XTX over my current RTX 3080. Smaller form factor plus 24gigs of VRAM is nice. I dont play as much games as I use too and have been working with AI a lot recently, so this move would be best for me. Also, going over to Linux with an AMD card is much better than jumping over to linux with an Nvidia card.

If you're getting into AI theres usually some compatability issues with AMD cards, something like stable diffusion for example you'll need to do a little more coding to get it working properly.
When I got my 7900 xt in January my Gtx 970 outperformed it in stable diffusion, thankfully now with Onnx and Microsoft Olive we can finally utilise AMD cards properly for SD.

I think it depends what you are doing with the card, Nvidea has superior multi screen support as far as I’m aware, if you are playing in VR or at 4k it’s the 1% lows that matter the most, VRAM is becoming more important if you want to run 4k with high textures. There’s a lot more to it these days and everyone’s personal requirements are different, it’s very difficult to recommend this kind of stuff as PC systems are all unique to the individual. Unless you have a list of the individuals specific needs, you can’t really make recommendations with any real substance. But as a general guide these type of videos are ok.

7800 xt is this generations best bang for the buck. I believe this $500 gpu will last a good 4 years with its 16gb of vram. Its pretty much a 4070 without the raytracing perk, and its way cheaper.

If you could get a 7900 xtx for $650? That would be epic.

An old article really said it best: In recent generations if feels like NVIDIA is selling DLSS more then video cards. And why is NVIDIA so desperate to push Ray Tracing, when it clearly hurts the FPS, and the quality difference just doesn't make up for it ...

    • @BearfootBob
      @BearfootBob Před 7 měsíci +2

DLSS + DSR really is that good, image quality wise. Makes a 1080 panel look almost 1440 when putting DSR on an older game. And ray tracing is eye candy, and eye candy sells. Reflections on buttocks. Sold. I agree about AMD value. Been team red since it was Radeon. Chanced upon a 2060, and compared to 6600 , I'd rather have less rasterization for the better image quality of the 2060. I can run games at 4k on that card, on my 1440p screen , plus DLSS and the image is so much better than what the 6600 can produce AFAIK...new drivers may have changed that? Plus having NVENC for streaming. All that said I may go Red for my next GPU, upgrade from 2060 is pretty confusing right now.

It depends. In some games i don't care about RT at all. In Cyberpunk it's a little hit or miss, but the game is a total hog to run even without it, so bogging it down more just appears unwise. In Watch_Dogs Legion RT is just not good, game bogs down on BVH updates and then the BVH is still underpopulated, and the game just doesn't look all that good with or without raytracing, so attempts at visual enhancement are kind of not even particularly worth it here.
Absolutely love RT even just lowest settings in Spiderman remaster, it just makes the city that much more visually cohesive when the reflections are correct. And it's not hard to run at all. Can't say i'm particularly fond of DLSS in this game, i actually prefer IGTI.
Also been playing Control with raytraced indirect lighting, it's their heavy RT effect, and i find it transforms the game, so what if i have to use heavy DLSS, worth it. RT reflections in this game are fairly easy to run though.
My GPU is an RTX 2060 Super (8GB). I got it not too long ago for very little money. I didn't know how much mileage i'd get out of RT feature in particular, but i needed an NVidia for other reasons, and i'm pleasantly surprised. Also quite happy with DLSS2 indeed.
I do wish FSR2 was less visually offensive. I find the burst of noisy pixels on deocclusion very annoying. I feel they could have a deocclusion mask generated by the algorithm and then just blur those pixels to hide the sin. I don't know why they haven't done something in this direction. I would use FSR2 if it were the sole option, but i can't push it nearly as far.

Yeah but at one point, it's all these technologies which are very demanding that will make all the diference to be closer to photorealistic footages. If you pay a little bit attention, you will see that rt make all the deferences in light managing. And for me a bad lightning management kills the realism of a game.(just graphically speaking of course)

Almost any high end GPU like the 4090 or 4080 costs around 3000 dollars here and midrange GPUs like the 6700xt and 6650xt cost around 600 - 800 dollars, not to mention the 4060 and 4060 ti that for some reason can sometimes cost almost 1000 dollars. I've been basically stuck with my rx580 for the past +5 years now since there aren't any affordable options that provide a significant increase in performance. In summer if you looked at the market for facebook marketplace, at least a lot of people in my area were selling 4090s for 1300usd(1600-1800$ cad). I bought a msi 4090, I was thinking about getting a tuf but, heard the coil whine on those were louder and it was sorta 4 hours away more for a drive. Also I did see a few msi suprim x's and liquid selling for around 1500-1700$, if you got lucky to buy it in time before the seller sold it.
Overall it was mainly deals on 4090s in summer at least in canada where I lived. Atm prices came back to around 2k$ cad for them to 2.2k$ and is slowly going up again on the used market sadly. Mostly cause of the AI boom I'm psure.
My thoughts are you don't really need a 4090 for gaming unless your doing like 4k or ultra high settings and ray tracing. Since I see people use a 7800x3d and a 3080ti evga, and hit good fps numbers on most shooter games. that is shooter specific though. Singleplayer games 4090 could help out a bit more though.
I feel like most people should wait on 5000 series to drop since ddr7 is coming out, and so is ryzen 9000 x3d parts and that is when biggest uplifts will be seen though.

I'm respectful that there are CZcamsrs that are accounting for the people with less money so they also have a chance to get a Gaming PC, many people are talking about the 4080 and 4090, but there are a lot of people out here who don't have such a budget. I bet that the lower budget people many times are much happier with their device than the high budget people. The most important thing is that you're happy with your PC whatever your budget is, and not just for having the best PC and wanted to be better than others.

in the $400-500 arena I think there's more to consider. Firstly the 7700xt is a great card and very capable, it's also at the beginning of its life. The 6700xt is end of life, already 3-4 years old and until about 10 months to a year ago, nobody was promoting it. It seemed to suddenly age really well, a combination of drivers and price drops, but only the early adopter sees that benefit.
Also a used 3080 has insane power draw compared to a 7700xt for marginal gains. I'd also say here in the UK at least that price of the 7700xt is a lot more attractive because the 7800xt is a minimum of £530 going up to £590 and the 4070 is a min of £570 for decent models. We and most of Europe don't tend to see anywhere near MRSP that the American market does.
