      @Doug Polk Poker One thing I was thinking is that if Labat puts Zhu on the range of aces (considering he jammed so large) he would still win a sizable put against Manion. Hope that makes sense and, more importantly, the correct way to think about it.

    Hi Doug, I think there are factors specific to this hand that make calling good and that also make folding good.
    The first factor is Labat's first 1.5 call. Is he doing that for pot control or to be trappy??? If it's to be trappy, then mission accomplished! Labat's flat MIGHT have gotten Zhu to shove light. And thus, if so, Manion COULD be lighter than AA more often. This spot can easily be KvJvQ. (exploitative)
    Also, like you mentioned if he's good and wins here, he is finishing with top 3+ money in almost every simulation, the payoff is enormous. (theory)
    Why not to call: apparently, based on the previous day's action Zhu was super snug so Zhu's "loose" 40 bb jam range is probably going to be way tighter than yours and closer to J+ AK and possibly AQs. He's probably not Jamming 9s or 10s, he's probably just calling. Maybe 3bet. Jamming is just a really weird thing for him to do here in general. In fact, earlier on the telecast he did the exact same jam with KK which got no action, but the players probably found out about. If Zhu's playing style is super nitty he's more likely to be over-jamming the goods like a 2005 amateur. (exploitative)
    Why else not to call: the manner in which Manion went all-in. He's utg, the tightest player over-jams, and Manion took like 15 seconds before casually flipping a chip in. That's the live equivalent of checking the call box online, late in the main these guys think for eons if they actually have a decision. Ak and QQ needs at least a minute or two to decide. He didn't even bother Hollywooding JUST IN CASE Labat ever has specifically KK. It's late in a long session at the end of a long week of long sessions, it's as if Manion is saying "let's just get this over with and go to bed pls," because Manion is completely disregarding that Labat is sitting on a monster and not any ordinary portion of his range like JT or 55. Even Manion himself in the pre-FT interview the next night said "honestly I thought it was pretty obvious what I had." (exploitative)
    Another reason to fold: Combined card removal, which you didn't really mention in this vid even though you usually do. If Labat has KK, then if Zhu has QQ then Labat almost never has AK or AQ. If Zhu has JJ Manion could have QQ. If they both had AQ the action would be completely different. The more narrow Zhu's range, the more narrow it also makes Manion's range and the worse it makes your kinds which is what the 2+2 guy is saying. (theory)
    Fold: the amount of chips Manion and Labat have. It's too many to lose in such a dangerous spot at such an important time. If he folds he loses 2.2 bigs. It's like one of those times where it's correct to fold aces preflop at the bubble of a satellite. It's not the end of the world to let Manion and Zhu race for stacks, Labat is still 3rd in chips with a good seat draw for the next day. (theory)
    In summary, calling is correct because he trapped and induced a squeeze. And folding Kings preflop is generally terrible almost always. However, calling here was incorrect because of multiple unique situational factors.
    My biggest problem was that Labat simply didn't take enough time to decide. You yourself spoke for 15 minutes about all of the things to consider, but Labat called within 90 seconds. He didn't give himself the opportunity to fully consider what the hell was happening, he just went with "don't ever fold Kings preflop, you're not good enough." Which is fine, it's definitely winning in the long-run (esp online) but it was a once in a lifetime spot where he needed to go 1 for 1 but didn't. Cheers

Waiting until you have aces or flop the nuts is just going to mean missing out on massive amounts of EV.

      It’s quite simple: if you play to win as much money as possible, fold kings there. If you say i don’t care about the money i play poker to win. You have to make that call and hope to become chip leader. The way the hand is played, zhu could have QQ, AK or KK, manion could have QQ+. You might be in a good spot in the sidepot and you could even be ahead in both pots. Usually you will also have outs, so it makes sense to just go for the chiplead here.

People are too focussed on outcomes. If you're all-in on a hand where you've got 50+ percent against the other dude, you're playing winning poker. Yeah, sure, runouts suck but you have to remind yourself that so long as you're getting all your bucks in at 50+ percent, that's a positive EV play. You don't have time to shit in tournaments, doubling up is why you are there.

    • @iambadatpickingusernames6669
      @iambadatpickingusernames6669 Před 3 lety

      This isn't entirely accurate. To win chips means you must risk chips. Risking chips means you can bust. Busting means missing pay jumps. This is a fundamental part of ICM: the value of additional chips in tournaments doesn't go one for one with dollar amounts. In general, ICM dictates playing tighter later in the tournament, when there are massive pay jumps that can be earned by just waiting around. There is risk involved in earning additional chips. People do overfactor ICM in the middle stages of the tournament, but by the end when the pay jumps are soon, they should all be cognizant that risking chips excessively can harm their ICM value.
      Now I'd probably call with kings here (actually I'd have 3-bet, then folded to a 5 bet jam), because I've under-repped my hand and Mannion could be jamming worse not thinking much of my flat. That's what is not getting talked about enough in this hand. If Labat had just 3-bet, he easily could've got away from it.

    Yeah, I've seen the hand before. I'm trying to put myself in Labat's position, with final table on the line, and a significant pay bump. I think I fold my K's. I've got to beat TWO people if I call/jam, making my percentages of winning the hand greatly reduced.

    • @viperswhip
      @viperswhip Před 4 lety

      But, unless they have aces, there's no reason to fold. Let's say they both have Ace King, or Queens, they play it the same way, as Doug explained. You are behind in only one situation. I think here the worst possible would be an Ace King and a pair of Queens, because that leaves 3 aces in the deck to beat you and one king gone. It's that or Aces, you really can't. Either player is doing this with worse hands than you every single time except 1 time.

    I think discussion like this is why I personally never play with ranges and graphs etc. Mind you I play 5/10 recreationally (lifetime profitable at this level) but I know if I was in that spot with kings in Labats shoes, I’m for sure folding. I play with my gut and what action has happened. I don’t construct ranges for myself or do any of those graphs per se- just theory. I know the Asian guy will shove tight. Almost snap call shows very strong hand. Aks+Kk+. There’s no way I would call here being on bubble of WSOPME. But everyone plays different which is why poker is beautiful.

    • @guibox3
      @guibox3 Před 6 lety

      If it was just Zhu in the hand, it is an instacall. However, when you consider 1) this is the bubble for the final table, 2) That Labat has a bigger stack ahead of Mannion, you have to consider that Mannion's not shoving with AK or QQ not knowing what Labat, who can knock him out of the tourney, has. Taking those things into consideration and that there is a possibility that someone could be leaving giving him a place at the final table; folding here was Labat's safest option. If Mannion had about as manychips as Zhu did, then I think it was a definite call. However, he had to know that one of them had AA, and as fast as Mannion called, it was most likely Mannion. Two people are going to put their life on the line this close to the final table with anything less than AA or KK? I doubt it

    It was an easy fold for labat. If one guy had an underpair (let’s say QQ Or JJ Or even 22) and the other guy AX (let’s say ak, aq, Aj or even a3) then labat has a 50% chance of winning the hand against two opponents. (The underpair has 20% chance and the AX has 30% chance), so at best he is flipping a coin against both opponents. Why play for seven days to flip a coin.

    • @michelcharbonnier7603
      @michelcharbonnier7603 Před 6 lety +4

      1. because it isn't a coin flip. KK is about 56% in that scenario.
      2. it's poker. If you'd try to wait around for 7 days, you wouldn't make it past Day 1.

    • @SchnackfattLP
      @SchnackfattLP Před 6 lety

      Michel Charbonnier But that is the best case scenario - doesn’t seem too attractive to me. And even Doug - who hates ICM ;) - admitted this is a tough spot for KK. If it’s that close of a decision folding KK here can’t be that bad. ICM is a huge factor here when you are sitting on a somewhat deep stack and there’s a decent chance the final table will be set after this hand. It’s definitely tough, I can see calling but folding is more than understandable as well.

    • @alext5497

      Michel Charbonnier 56% is as close as flipping a coin as it gets. I’m not saying to wait around ALL tournament. I meant in this specific hand and specific situation FT bubble. U can’t play the same way in every situation. Adapt or perish.

    • @thesaim1036
      @thesaim1036 Před 6 lety

      It’s obviously a very tough spot, but I think I would be folding here. I know my KK could be good more than 30% of the time, but with such a deep stack and a table i’ld be able to take advantage from in easier spots just makes me wanna let this one go. Looking back on it, it could have been one of the worse folds of my life, but I’m totally ok with that. This Utg guy is also snap jamming, and I think if he had QQ/JJ/AK it would have taken him more than 3 seconds, especially with the insanely high ICM pressure.
      I don’t mind the call tho, it’s obviously not bad and in the end it’s a standard cooler, but it’s one of these situations where you can get away and wait for better spots.
