      What about installing a tank heater, to warm and circulate the coolant throughout the engine block and cooling system? Or, if it can be done safely, placing a small portable heater in the car's cabin overnight to help keep ice & snow from building-up on the roof & windows, and warm the interior?

      Remote starter's are nice for getting into a warm car but they aren't very good for your engine. Idling upon startup for anything longer than a minute in freezing temperatures is very hard on modern engines. The best way way to warm them up is to get them on the road and apply some throttle. So dress warm and save your money for something other than a remote start system.

    Don't gun it!!! It's okay to drive it conservatively until it reaches normal operating temperature but don't hop in and floor it. I personally don't warm my car up as modern cars really don't require a warm up period, I just give it a few seconds to build oil pressure and baby it until the temp gauge starts to climb and everything quites down.

    • @USAFTACP
      @USAFTACP Před 5 lety +2

      001 002 warming in the general sense is for carburated vehicles for the fuel air mixture rate. Modern cars automatically adjust fuel delivery on the fly, negating the need to warm up the engine.

    • @EricFortuneJr.
      @EricFortuneJr. Před 5 lety +28

      001 002 On some really cold mornings the engine oil is more viscous and doesn’t flow as good, it settles over night so it’s best not to floor it. It works best at operating temperature, notice how much quieter your engine runs after it’s warmed up good vs a really cold start. It’s fine to drive it cold as long as you don’t dog it out and this is assuming you’re using the correct viscosity, 5w20 0w20 5w30 etc...

    I don't think you mentioned if you're in a snowy area to turn the wipers OFF before turning the engine off. If you shut off the engine mid-stroke and the wipers seize to the glass, when you start the engine the wipers will still be ON even if switched off. The wipers are only completely off when the arms are back to their rest points.

      @@muumuumu This is another thing I see a lot in the winter months, and one that potentially causes more severe problems than leaving the blades on the windshield. You run the risk of the arms freezing in the maintenance position if you have a steady rain that turns into a flash freeze. If that happens, your defroster won't help at all - unlike if the blades freeze to the windshield.

    Scotty I put a big piece of cardboard on my windshield in the winter ! Turn wipers on , shut the car off on the down ward stroke , turn wipers off , turn defrosters on high ! Now put cardboard behind wipers and go to bed . In morning hit remote starter and when you are ready to leave put cardboard in back seat , it will dry out and be fine ! This also works on back window if it has a wiper . The best things are when the season is over , no storage it recyclable and it’s FREE ! I’m from UPSTATE NY and did this for many years !

    I'm surprised there was no mention of winter tires. If you live in the snow belt, get a set mounted on their own steel rims so you can easily swap them in/out. FACT: a FWD car with a set of snow tires has better traction than a 4WD car with all-seasons.

Ever since a neighbour had to deal with a cracked windshield thanks to Mother Nature bringing the wind along with ice and snow, sending his wipers crashing down, I leave them alone. I also had a retired mechanic tell me that putting them up can easily mess up the tiny springs in them and it wears out the arms prematurely. It doesn't take much to break them so they're better protected against the windshield. You have to wait for crap to defrost anyway, so the few seconds you're waiting for them to release from the glass is nothing.

    The straight water trick can be good for water pump or cooling system components can be good for troubleshooting but just that. I use straight water to do a ops/leak check after installation. Just remember to drain the water right away while it is still fairly warm and flows better. Replace with coolant after that and then do the air bleeding procedure. The disadvantage to the water is that it is clear so a leak might not be as easily detected. The Coolant even if dirty should have a contrasting color background to make leaks easier to detec.

    Scotty, everybody here hate the Honda Fit but I love it, I have a Honda Fit 2010 five speed automatic made in Saitama Japan and it’s fun to drive, zero problems, I bought this car with 27.000 miles and now has 60.000, runs excellent, the transmission make noises, weird noises sometimes but people say it’s normal.
    I know, it’s cheap and small but it’s more roomy than a corolla, maybe one day you can do a video about this little car and talk about it, thank you, good channel, I learn a lot whit your videos.

      About 60 years ago with me begging her not to, my mom poured HOT, not boiling water, on her windshield. It didn’t crack, but the water froze immediately, and then she had an even thicker layer of ice. That was near Houston, so it was just in the twenties. I learned about wipers in the air when I was a long haul truck driver. Still do it now on my car.

    Scotty!! Please forgive me if one one of the other 3,733 comments already mentioned this (I haven't read them all) but 🙄 . . . Speaking about windshield wipers in the winter (freezing temps), I'm disappointed that you didn't mention that you should NEVER turn the car off without turning the wipers to OFF first. If they're not parked, the first thing that happens when the ignition is turned on is the wipers will run. Even if you turn them to off before turning the key on, they will try to go to the parked position. If you realize you forgot to turn them off (even intermittent off), make sure they are not stuck before turning the key to on. Other than that item being left out, I enjoyed this video. Thanks 😁

      That's fine just make sure you hit one of the morons that wrote the article since you can't see where the hell you are going when all the windows are fogged up or iced up. I don't care what they say, I have several high mileage vehicles that I warm up before I drive them, until they're buying my cars for me and paying repair bills they have no damn say in how I treat my vehicles and you can easily damage all sorts of stuff jumping in a cold vehicle and driving off like a bat out of hell as many people do...but since many never keep their car longer than a year or 2 anymore they'll never have any idea what the damage is by doing so.

I've seen people use credit cards, keys, whatever they can get their hands on, in a vain attempt to clean their iced over windshields! It never ceases to amaze me how, unprepared people are. Just buy a scraper for under $10 put it in your trunk and forget about it until you need it and, it's there! I paid a little more for mine as, it is for an SUV and adjustable with the rotating brush but, I've had some last for more than 10 years. The only time I didn't have one was when I lived in Socal and, did not need it, rest assured when I came back East, I got one as soon as fall hit!

    As a trucking company maintenance manager I knew to make sure tires were inflated when cold but not freezing. Checking tire pressure when freezing can cause valve stems to freeze open. I also had to check and let air out of tires after winter because the trucks would go to Texas and the the tires would blow by being over-inflated. After winter in Arizona it was common to hear parked trailer tires blow while just sitting in large drop lots.

    Thanks Scotty, enjoy your advice and/or refresher. Living in Minnesota we know the trick of leaving wipers propped up, and batteries are only good for 2-3 years. Unsure if antifreeze technology has changed, but coming from a bygone era of engine heaters (usually frost plug or coolant heater) otherwise, you were putting a pan of hot coals under the oil pan.

Initially when the dealer installed the unit, it didn't work so good, I had to go back multiple times when I first purchased the car, to have them adjust it. They warned me that it would wear out the starter if they adjusted it to the level needed to work on very cold days. I told them to do it, anyway 15 years later I still have the car and same remote starter and I have never had to fix anything else related to the ignition, starter, etc.
