    Thank You, 2005 North American VW Jetta TDI with 225,000 miles. Fan is intermittent with a bit of a moaning noise while running. It started this yesterday and today it is 106 degrees F (41 C) today. My AC works, just have to drive fast to get some air into the car. Your video is very much appreciated. Cheers, Bob

    Thanks Charly! I'm about to tackle this job on my USDM Golf Mk4. This helped alot. It's my first VW, and it's taught me alot so far between needing 4 tires, a windshield, the driver's side door latch, driver's side window regulator, the hatch latch needed repaired and greased, 3 our of 4 brake calipers were either seized or leaking, brake pads all the way around, a new fuel tank with pump and sender, new rear brake hoses (because someone tried to crimp the stainless braided hoses and collapsed the inside of them), the secondary air pump, the MAF sensor, the entire exhaust, shocks, springs, and struts (because someone cut the springs all the way around the lower the car and it was riding on the bump stops), all of the rear bulbs were faulty, and the central locking wasn't working. I bought this car for $400 to drive back and forth to work and I've dropped another $1500 into it because I'm committed now. This is my 56th car that I've owned since I was 14 and I'm 36 now. First VW for me...

    Great little video. My blower didn't wrork and I replaced the resistor and still no luck..your video showed me how to replace the motor...works like charm now. Only difference...mine is a north American version (Canada). I broke a tab on the console side and the glove box came right out...didn't have to work around it. Thanks for taking the time to do the DIY video. I give it a 10 out of 10!

    It is almost always the resistor. Remove the resistor, which is easy to do, replace it with a 2nd hand one from ebay (v cheap). If it doesn't work you will have to remove the blower motor and have it checked by your nearest auto-electric workshop. If it is U/S ebay again but make sure it is the correct one (part number is on the motor) as they vary.

    Charly these are great instructions, i have a seat ibiza 1.4 2000 with the same set up, but the car changes the fan speed electronically instead of manual turning knob. so the blower fan resistor isn't there. the problem is the car stays at speed 1 (which is bad because its in minus degree weather now). Sometimes over a bump on the road the fan starts working, and i can adjust it, so everything mechanically is fine. any ideas where i should focus on looking??

  • @Charlyfarly2
    @Charlyfarly2  Před 11 lety

    If there is no heat at all then it is not the blower. It might be debris, such as leaves, blocking the air flow through the heat exchanger. A hose carrying the hot air to the vents may have become detached. The rough running is wear and tear on the blower bearing but it will not affect the amount of heat on the other settings.

  • @therealchayd
    @therealchayd Před 11 lety

    I had a similar problem, it was due to the blower sucking up some of the sound damping foam and that getting caught in the impeller and spinning round. Just follow Charly's instructions and you'll probably see a big wad of the stuff caught in the blades.

    The blower only working on 4 seems like the resister. It is cheap (2nd Hand on ebay) and simple to replace. If it then works on all four speeds but the air con doesn't come on then that must be caused by something else. Have you checked the fuse for the ACpump?

  • @peterwalker6663

    On my 2nd resistor unit. Appears water gets down inside the heater blower and corrodes the resister unit and causes it to fail. I also pulled off a plastic round cap on the bottom of the motor housing out came a egg cup full of dirty water and grit. Directly inside the cap is the bearing that the fan runs in? no wonder we have problems, bearing running in dirty water. Need to stop water getting into blower intake under bonnet. Not a good design.

  • @Charlyfarly2

    Hi, First sort out your blower motor issue. Most probably it could be the blower motor resister which is under the glove box. remove the soft plastic cover under the glove-box and you will see electrical connection with 4 wires. Remove the connector, push the plastic female part sideways and it will come out.

  • @carlosmanuelcabreraalvarad4365

    I have a similar issue, the fan does not work at any speed, but when I put #4 it blows the fuse, I havent done any test besides checking the fuse. what should I do?

    • @Charlyfarly2
      @Charlyfarly2  Před 8 lety

      +Prashaant Siddharth Teeluckdharry If it only works on 4th speed it must be a problem with the resistor. Check the four connections to it. If it still doesn't work resistors are easy enough to get 2nd hand on the internet. The light problem is probably just the bulb. Sorry, I cannot help with the air con - mine didn't have it.

      On my 2000 VW Golf, the A/C light only came on in position 1 and the cabin air fan did not work at all. I found the cabin air fan shorted and burned up the series resistor module, the plug and part of the wiring harness.
      New cabin air fan. New series resistor module. These were easy to find. With the cabin air fan installed and no connection to the blower motor resistor, the A/C light only comes on in position 1 and the fan runs full blast only in position 4.
      I had to go to a VW and an Audi dealer to replace the connector that mates to the series resistor module. The connector housing is VW 1J0 972 704, which replaces the old 1J0 972 754 connector housing. The pins come crimped on either end of a foot long piece of wire - wire set VW 000 979 225 E.
      I carefully removed the working wires and pins from the melted connector with a pair of tweezers. I used a barrel crimp and some heat shrink to mend the old wire to the wire set cut in half.

    • @nplus1watches35
      @nplus1watches35 Před 4 lety

      Good video, Charly; a couple of helpful items to aid troubleshooting -> 1) once you have the resistor pack out, you can test if it’s good or not by taking a DMM and measuring the resistance across the fuse at the end of the resistor pack. A functioning pack will have a reading near zero ohms. 2) you can test the fan by connecting two wires (ground and +) to a car battery and seeing if the fan spins (probably on high). The fan speed rheostat is part of the fan speed selector switch. Sometimes if the switch is bad, it’s because the plastic piece holding the metal contact arm broke. Epoxy or super glue may be able to fix that. That’s the only part of the fan repair that needs the center console taken apart.
