    Hey Chris, first time viewer here, here in Ireland we run herd of Simmental cows. We are now 5th gen sim and really like them. Calves getting big has been an issue, getting a bull suitable for both heifers and cows is difficult so have been using AI on all maidens. Thankfully having good results. Used Angus on empty heifers last year and though calves were vigorous as hell, they are way behind Sims on size and weight so won’t be going that route again! Simmental are hard to beat and cows make great mothers

    So far have watched a few of your video's. Just subscribed! A neighbor of ours has the traditional Simmentals like you, Very good breed, We are going to a black Simmental bull for 2025 breeding on our cattle, currently running a Purebred but non-registered black angus herd with some Angus x Hereford. Excited to see what the Simmental bull will do on the black baldies we have.

    We've been raising Commercial Balancer cattle for close to 30 years now. When my dad and grandpa got started, they had Limousin cattle that they used Angus, Red Angus, and Simmental bulls on. We settled on the Gelbvieh's and Balancer, but I still love me a good Fleckvieh cow or bull. You have nice looking cattle!

    The biggest reason i try and stay with angus is feed efficiency. It's amazing the feed consumption difference from 1,100 to 1,500 cow. And the buyers at the sale barn like black hided calves.

    • @ohrmundtsimmentals
      @ohrmundtsimmentals  Před 4 měsíci

      Definitely don't disagree with that. That's why I don't like really big frame. Plus our cows need to do well on grass hay over the winter without much else.
      I have always been annoyed by the " we want black hide" at the sale barn. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good the calves are either. We sometimes see a bunch of Angus/Holstein cross calves around here and you can tell they're more Holstein than Angus but they have a black hide. 🙄
      The only thing good about the high demand right now. It's that colors don't seem to matter.

    Really good explanation Chris. We have a mixed commercial herd, switched to using sim. Bulls in 2009 and been very happy since. We had Simmental when I was younger, started breeding with Angus later on. Now my cows are Angus, Simmental, Limo, and now some British White Park. We like colors. Solid black or red gets boring! Lol
    And on the rail, without hide on them, they are hard to tell apart if they are fed the same!

    I think it might be best to focus on all black and black blaze animals. Calve ease high growth. Since you have a small herd go with large cows
    Big herds need medium efficient cows. Your specialty could be powerful calve eash high. Growth bull sales. I’m in Wisconsin and would buy those type of bulls from you.

      We usually have kept 4 or 5 bulls. Then selling all the steers but 1 for us. Now we keep all the steers and finish them ourselves. That's why we don't mind adding the color of the full bloods. We do really like the blaze faces from the full blood bulls on our black cows. This also why I want to keep the data up on our full bloods to help the epds be a little more represented.
