Simmental Cattle Purchase

  • Hello, This video showcases the post winter storm and our decision to make the most of a bad situation. We lost 5 calves during the winter storm. Instead of crying about it, we decided to go to a "Premium" Simmental/Angus cattle sale and purchase a couple of "Pairs" and a bull to offset the losses we had last week. Basically, it's like doubling down at the casino when you have a loss. We also purchased a new herd sire that will have a major influence on our herd for the next five years. We also highlight some plumbing repairs we made to the weld house in the pecan orchard.
    thanks for watching. Please hit the subscribe button, leave a comment and let us know your thoughts.
    Glory be to God.

    Hello, Thanks for all the positive post over last week. It’s been extremely brutal here in Texas. We faired better than most, but we still had losses. I made a decision to press the gas instead of the brake pedal and move forward. I hate to dwell on the past. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those impacted by these unprecedented winter storms.

    I am here from Homesteading Pastor. I watched a few of your veidos and subscribed to your channel. I live in Oklahoma and got a touch of what you went threw. This weekend the sun came out and Sunday and Monday the snow melted. We still don't have water. Something about the pressure. We been out almost a week. God bless all the people in Texas and help them get back on their feet.

    I would say your doing better all in all..Cram that water shed with insulation everywhere walls floor, ceiling and wrap the pipes and tanks with it. 150 watt heat lamp from the ceiling your good for any winter event. One fine lookin bull..he will grow to be excellent sized.

    Nice looking animals. That bull has a heck of frame for 16 months. It'll be nice to see him around three years old to see how he finishes out.

    Hi Scott, we had a 300 cow herd and started using Simmental bulls (AI) in the mid 70’s then went to Limousin in the 80’s. Simmental made a big improvement genetic wise in our herd. You’re gonna love your purchase.
    Calving ease was one thing we always put a priority on when choosing our AI Bull choices

      Thanks for watching. I totally agree. We focus on calving ease as our first priority.

    Way to press forward and keep your head up. I ended up losing 1 new calf during the storm. I contacted my local FSA to see if there's any help for these kinds of situations. They do offer a Livestock Indemnity Program through Disaster Assistance but man they ask for a lot of paperwork. It may be worthwhile for you since you lost 5 calves. If I'm reading it right they offer $163.15 per documented lost calf.

      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello Sir. Thank you. I’m not going to fall into the pity trap, this will make me stronger. Yes, I looked into the FSA Info, you are correct. It’s not a lot of $, but I’ll take it over nothing. I’ll use it to offset the cost of the pairs I just purchased. Sorry to hear about your loss. Really sucks. But what can you do?

  • @justmike57
    @justmike57 Před 3 lety +1

    Yes, it is a shame that you are offing the cows that lost their calves to the cold. You must have gotten a good deal on the two cow/calf pair and Bull.

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před 3 lety

      Hello Mike, We are constantly culling and upgrading a few cows every year. Depending on age, genetics, calving history, etc.

    It’s a hard job but someone has to do it. Great looking bull calf and cows.
    Do you cow have a barn or shelter? Are you selling cows that lost calves because you don’t want to wait or because you think they aren’t good mothers?

    • @HeritageFarmsTexas
      @HeritageFarmsTexas  Před 3 lety

      Hello, regarding the cows that we are going to sell. Couple of different factors, One is a 3 yr old that has now lost two calves, cutting my loss. A couple others are commercial cows and selling to pay for the registered pairs. Upgrading the herd.

      Hello sir, Texas as a whole was not prepared for this. Unfortunately I learned a lot, but the school of hard knocks was very expensive. Appreciate you asking. The CZcams community is very strong. Thank you.
