Taking a good look at the next generation.
I finally get to spend some good time looking over the calves and I'm liking what I'm seeing.

When do you wean the calves?
@@owenpiggott2640 We will start looking to wean calves in mid to late September.
The quality isn’t the best, but quantity is definitely there!
@@timpingel9607 oh yeah the volume at least has been there. 👍
Amazing…
I took my agitator off and let it gravity feed the bouncing across the field keeps it knocked down.
@@mihandsplitters705 we thought about doing that if we couldn't find something close. It seems to work pretty good.

@@creeperchaogaming1589 thank you!
Amazing

How many acres of pasture total? Room for more animals or pretty close on stocking rate?
@@e.a.bfarms we have right about 40 acres of pasture and we're probably right at max stocking rate. That's why I keep telling Dad they need to go to the back pasture. We usually end up feeding a dozen baled during summer to stretch it out.
Great video! Man I hate fencing. . . Haha
Im sure you've probably said before, but how long are they on the paddocks before you move them?
@@joshhorvat8247 I size the paddock for an every other day move. This year being that it has been so wet, I've made them a little bit bigger than a normal year.
Haha, must be an Ohrmundt trait! Backlashing a line! 😂
That last paddock you moved from was grazed beautifully
"FUN" 👍
@@e.a.bfarms lol yup 😆
How many cc's can be loaded into the dart?
@@tim7409 there are different capacity size darts. I have a 3,5,7&10cc size darts. I think for one of my treatments I put 4cc in a 5cc dart.
We got a bunch of rain this season too. I have given up on rotational grazing. I was moving daily, but now cause of water, i am giving them bigger week long paddocks. Less damage I believe.
@@whiteface5055 that was last big rain event. It's started slowing down now. The rest of the rotations get better. Thankfully!
You can spread Japanese millet right into and around water and it will grow. Our cattle eat it
@@mihandsplitters705 nice! I've kicked around the idea of trying millets for this or to fill in weak hay/pastures. Maybe I'll still try it this summer. 👍👍
Do you guys ever bring them up in the yard and feed hay to save the pastures from getting tore up? Looks like a perfect time to broadcast some seed on the exposed mud.
Shop Vac in a grain drill is a Huge time saver😊. What did we do before Shop Vacs? Our rotational grazing is muddy too. All the gates and pinch points are quagmires. The cows are getting fussy…
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn our cows are getting a little fussy too. It's gonna be some quick rotating the next couple rounds with the way things look. We'll be in though. 🤞😆
Give them a bigger area to eat no rotational grazing with all the rain you shouldn’t be having a problem
@@janetlutter9925 yeah it's hard to rotate with this much water. I've actually been giving them larger chunks than I normally this year On about 20 acres of pasture that in front of them and behind them has standing water. 🙄
Can you send some southern utahs way. No rain in Two months. 114 today and rest of the week
@@dianebills5433 I wish I could!
The only problem with that mineral is that it takes about 3 weeks to get a pallet of it shipped to a store. Also, I am a Lacross Seed dealer. Feel free to reach out for a quote next year. I can ship it right to your door.
@@e.a.bfarms oh nice, good to know. Sometimes you don't know where the seed comes from when it comes from the mill. Yeah they seem to have like 3or4 bags when we go to the store. It would be nice to get enough at a time to get the discount though.
@ohrmundtsimmentals Yeah, we buy a pallet at a time. . .I just got to remember to order it well before you are out. . .
@@e.a.bfarms at least it seems like decent stuff for a decent price.
We had a new holland 648 with net wrap sold it with 18,000 bales on it, only replaced two bearings and a u joint. It was a great baler. Newer RB 450 not as reliable
@@timflick2147 yeah the 648 is a nice baler. Very similar to ours. I'd like to find a 7070 possibly. Looking at John Deere balers too.
Good to be baling after all the wet weather. We hope to cut Monday based on the forecast. Wonder if your monitor has a cracked board. I had one on my Vermeer with an intermittent short that would shut off and restart periodically. Had dealer rebuild it in the off season. They found a cracked circuit board.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn after these bales it was 2 weeks till got to bale a little more. Yeah after the first 5 bales it hadn't had an issue since. Most likely some moisture in the connection. 🤷😆
What were the details on that baler? Looking forward to seeing the chopping equipment!
@@e.a.bfarms I'm pretty sure it was a New Holland 450(4x5) with net and rotocut. It only had about 10k bales through it. For a decent price. There should be a video coming in the next week or so showing the chopper boxes.
How'd the hay end up turning out?
It turned out decent. Nice grass hay. We cut 10 acres of really decent hay yesterday. The field that we spread manure on. Dad's going to Ted it this afternoon.
@ohrmundtsimmentals Hammer down! We have only made 40ish acres of about 1,400 this year and its almost july. . . Going to be along couple months. . .
@@e.a.bfarms wow, yeah 2 weeks of no rain would help us all out I think. Best of luck, you'll get there. 👍

@@mikehoffman1027 lol I can actually get a red dot sight for. 😉
GREEN GRASS GROWS I MISS MY DADS HOME HIS RANCH.
Them 499s were hay cutting machines, thats what I started with. Do you miss the hydro swing and being able to cut on both sides?
Oh yes that party we do miss. We still think we can cut a little faster with the 1411 than the 499. What always slowed us down was at the end was cutting into a wedge and starting plugging the reel. The out 499 was really nice, just the last year our 2 it was so hard to get it set to cut well.
Que hermoso es el campo isn't it
So relaxing
Way closer than I would have guessed. Even avraging with the outliers, it should be within spec of the package. 👍
Yeah I was kinda surprised too. Well worth the experiment. 😁
Looks like you guys are almost as wet as us. . .smh.
Can’t beat the Sim
Just dehorn the normal way
Which way is that?
@@ohrmundtsimmentals Depends how old they are. There's a couple different ways
@@regenbassford yeah this way just works for us. We really prefer just letting the bull do that job for us. 😆
Hey Chris, first time viewer here, here in Ireland we run herd of Simmental cows. We are now 5th gen sim and really like them. Calves getting big has been an issue, getting a bull suitable for both heifers and cows is difficult so have been using AI on all maidens. Thankfully having good results. Used Angus on empty heifers last year and though calves were vigorous as hell, they are way behind Sims on size and weight so won’t be going that route again! Simmental are hard to beat and cows make great mothers
Awesome! Thanks for watching. Couldn't agree more with your findings in breeding.
I'm a new subscriber and I was wondering do you make your own fly spray or if you don't what do you recommend and maybe the application
Thanks for subscribing! I just use a permethrin concentrate and mix it in a pump sprayer.
In rotational grazing, how often is it recommended to move your animals? Is it like every week or only when the grasses get down to a certain height?
It's all about utilisation of the grasses. Smaller chunks and more moves. Some will rotate twice a day, some once a day. I don't like them on a chunk for more than 3 days because your grass will start regrowing by then. Then the cows will go eat that fresh growth. You didn't want that because it doesn't have the recovery time.
@@ohrmundtsimmentals awesome thank you for the information.
It situations where you are in a dedicated pasture, what's the reasoning for not making the section fences permanent?
Because when you come back around 4or5 weeks later for round and then round 3 the chunks get bigger or I'd have to move them more frequently.
@ohrmundtsimmentals Yeah, just figured it would be easier adjusting time instead of area. But also doesn't look like it takes too much time running fence.
@@e.a.bfarms maybe 20 minutes. So not too bad.
Cows don’t need hay this time of year just green grass and water
No they don't need hay. I only used it to help lure them off that chunk of pasture they were on so I'd have less issues with calves getting stuck on the piece they were on.
How many cows did you end breeding ai? Excited for high life next spring.
I think it was 17 I think. Thanks, yeah I'm excited for them too. Hope we get at least 1. Lol
Just curious what the advantage is, to do the dna testing on registered cows?
I'll give an example and hopefully it helps. If I have 2 bulls both registered and maybe they're even full brothers. Bull A is DNA tested and bull B is not. Both have EPDs but bull A will have higher accuracy epds then bull B because of the DNA testing. I've heard that DNA testing would be similar to registering 25 offspring from that animal. I'm testing some of the full bloods because there isn't as much data in their pedigrees background to back up their EPDs. So I'm trying to give them a boost. Also I want to verify that they are non diluters.
There’s always gotta be a dumb cow… 😂🙃
Right!?!?
“Woooo they are lit” - my favorite comment you’ve ever said 😂
😂 We've had that happen though. A few calves that were born right around a big storm seem like they would rather run across 3 countries vs stay in their pasture. 🤦😆
Steak 🥩 yum 😋
Smiling...
Calves look good!!
Thanks!
Always nice seeing the cattle doing what they’re supposed to do turning grass into food.
Absolutely! 😊
Haha, I'm not sure I'd upset the wife! But like the clean look!!
Thanks
That’s the feed corn correct? Like the hard one people don’t eat for cows
Correct this is picked field corn that is only for cows. It's not sweet corn that people eat. I mean you could probably eat it but it probably won't taste very good. Lol
This is how babies are made❤ *BIDEN 2024*
