  • In this video I cover the shooting phase, and talk about the weapons and rules you need to consider for the American Civil War.
    I also look at skirmishers on the battlefield and artillery, and share some insight from games I have fought.
    I use the distances from the rule book as written, change to cms or half range as required.

    Very good video thanks for posting! I’ve played about a half dozen or so sessions of Black Powder and found it fast playing and fun. Watching this is a good refresher and motivation to get it back on the table. 👍

      you only got 2 colours and at 15mm . I have taken 5 years to build the same in 28mm for 2 large 2 small armies

    games always leave out artillery limbers and caissons....only the guns matter or get hit...even though the rest of the gear takes up far more space....
    wiping out limbers etc could leave the guns intact but totally immobile
    ...like is sailing ship games you can shoot at the rigging or hull

    I'm really enjoying your videos, thanks for making these. I've got the starter set and will be getting the extra contrast paints I need on Saturday.
    I just read the mixed order rules and came to the same conclusion as you. I'd generally prefer to have the 3 dice shooting rather than the -1 to be hit. Do you think this is a case where the rules fall a bit short? Or is it fair enough that the skirmish line would not have stayed in place for long?

    Great video! If you lose three stamina points does that force the unit to retreat? Are there rules that force a unit to retreat?

    Do these videos work for the normal black powder rules or just the “epic” scale?

    • @Unclecthulu
      @Unclecthulu  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, normal black powder. In fact the measurements I talk about are all regular BP measurements. The epic battle system is just smaller with reduced scales.

    So I have seen your video on movement and shooting. You were clear and informative. But I don't think I will game Black Powder. From what I saw, irrespective of the ranges of the weapons, a Battalion has the movement range to march down a road, deploy into line and then charge on an "initiative move" and the only counter fire will be a "charge response" which will result in marginal casualties at close range. Enfilading fire is irrelevant. i.e. The unit you had deployed at a 45 degree angle across the face of the Reb line of advance. I guess they don't respond to the charge because they are not the target and passively watch on. Apparently rifle fire does not care about targets 24" out, and field guns that would have been firing straight down a lane way with an unobstructed view of the enemy would not take advantage of infantry in column as a target. Further, there is a nod to skirmishers who seem wholly ineffective and as you stated, are not worth the value to deploy.
    All of this is totally contrary to the battles of the day which generally saw infantry charges broken before they could close to engage in melee or even break into a run to close the las 50 yards. Many a regiment barely got half distance before being stopped and driven back due to casualties.
    Skirmishers were not meant to stop attacking formations but to disadvantage them. Their primary role since the Napoleonic era, was to shoot officers and NCO's to disrupt the formations and their orders. Wellington equipped his famous rifle battalions with rifles to engage enemy skirmishers at longer range and stop their impact on the British line with great success. If there were no enemy skirmishers, then the main regiments were fair game. I understand the Sharps Rifle was a common enough weapon of the day to be issued at regimental level and made an excellent sniper rifle due to its breech loading capacity and very very good accuracy. Skirmishers were far more potent than just a nod to history. And when they reformed with the line they did not just swap out the weapons for muzzle loading muskets. So which would you think was faster firing, a breech loading rifle or a muzzle loading musket?
    None of this seems to be reflected in the rules.

      I wouldn't let that put you off the black powder rules are very good at being a starting guide and you can decide on your ways to play or rule changes that you want to do but I'm glad you have explained skirmishers so well and they should be more encouraged in war gaming have a look at epic battles waterloo that has just come out, it has finally gotten myself to commit to black powder being able to create the historic formations

    Sorry don't get it....when you switch from 28mm minis to this epic scale ...range for shooting or movement changes , doesn't it? From inches to centimenters ? Or else ???

    • @Unclecthulu
      @Unclecthulu  Před 3 lety +3

      Yes, it's your choice, use cms instead of inches, or 1/2 the ranges.

    What is the difference in firing stats between a 4 gun battery vs. a 6 gun battery?
