- Welcome to the final Battle Report of 2022 and iwhat better a game to play than Black Powder for some Napoleonic gaming. I'm been joined again by Hayley who seems to think that i need to be taught some kind of lesson. The set-up is a simple battle with points awarded for shaken and broken units at the end of the game and a bonus objective on the battlefield to add some tension.

hello martin. malachy here .glad to see black powder back on the roster ,appreciate the ongoing narrative always a help.i had my Christmas day acw battle .instead of measuring tape.i use 5mm diameter dowel rod with painted ranges ,short.medium long .for artillery . a rod for musket an carbines.and a rod for movement .it just saves the risk of someone dropping the tape measure on to the miniatures . always enjoy watching your black powder reports excellent !

PS. Really appreciate you producing & using actual casualty figures in your games. They really do add so much to the visual story of a battle. They’re my favorite break from regular line troops & add so much to a command stand or artillery base. Will you be trying out “ Valour & Fortitude “ as well as “Soldiers of Napoleon” ?
I love using casualty figures as I feel it adds to the overall feel of the battle. I want to try Valour and Fortitude, hopefully in the next few weeks 👍

Watching the video whilst also organising my soon to be ECW 28mm Royalist army got me to a great wargames start for 2023.
I must say your dice didnt let you down at crucial stages. Damn those Old guard were tough fighters. Even though losing all her Hanoverians the game was a great draw.
Proof that clear objectives and clean, simple games rules make for a great game.
I wish to thank you for motivating me, through your videos, to also get into ECW.
Based on your videos I have been looking at utilising Big Red Bat bases for the army and Flags of War flags for the units.
Damn you and your War of the Roses videos - I am fighting hard to not get into Hail Caesar as well. It is however a challenge.

You're a very lucky man to do fair battle with your wife. My wife crushes me by verbal assault before I can even move. Even the Imperial Guard would run away with their tails between their legs.

Another great video, great to see BP back on the table. Couple of points, with regard to using the CofE square rules, were you using the -3 combat result modifier for infantry fighting cavalry when not in square? I think your approach to shaken in combat is prolonging your close combats, especially for cavalry which are supposed to either win or bounce from combat. All the best and happy new year. Garry

The approach to shaken is an odd one, I used to play it the other way but then I remember reading in either the rules or a post that it only counted if you were shaken at the Start of the combat, so it just stuck for some reason. Should probably try and clarify it and then stick to it 😁 all the best
P.72 BP2 the 1st para of draws includes an unnecessary 'already',which causes the confusion. However the next para on cavalry makes it clear what was intended, all the best.
I’ve never played black powder but I’ve bought an army, I’m mostly learning the rules through these video’s!
When her cavalry charged you guard in her turn 1. They formed square after passing an order. But why wasn’t there any combat? I know cavalry are at a big disadvantage against square but can you choose to simply not engage? Or can they not engage?

No problem with the question, Cavalry will never charge home against a formed square. They will if it's disordered but they won't otherwise, they skirt around it 👍
