As a child in the uk after the war our village was occasionally visited by what were then 'men of the road' - frequently those for after the war had never been able to return to society for whatever reason and seemed destined to roam the roads stopping here and there. They asked nothing but a mug of tea - my mother who had been deported from her home in Poland to one of Stalin's gulags in Siberia before joining Ander's army had seen just about every horror you can think of - she always fed them well and helped in any small way she could. We ourselves were a poor family and I asked her once why she did it. 'You never know what is in front of you' she said - 'one day that could be you or your son or your brother - we have to help everyone who needs help'. Where has that compassion gone? Why is the world so evil now?
My parents were the same, always cared for those less well off or in need.
For the 2022-23 year, the UK Benefits (welfare) spend will be about £230 billion. All public sector spending is funded in the first instance by the private sector. Always buy the more expensive British-made products, not the cheaper Chinese stuff - and don’t complain about the high prices which support the wages of those British workers who make the products. That way you’ll be supporting the UK private sector whose taxes pay for all social welfare spending in the first instance. Thanks.
@@penfroI'm sorry, did you just suggest engaging capitalism as a solution for a society lacking compassion?
When people are raised to think the state is responsible for everything they stop taking action themselves. I was born in the 60's - back then there was less of a safety net so people helped out strangers rather than let them suffer. Now everyone just complains about the government and does nothing to actually help people. That's the down side of big state society - if the state is held responsible for everything individuals are free to be irresponsible and selfish. In my experience, the poorest people are always the most generous. Middle classes virtue signal, but it's always the poorest that offer a sofa to sleep on or a meal. Probably because they know the safety net has holes in it - no matter how much people pay in taxes.
It costs an individual pennies to offer a bed for the night and a meal. It costs the state a small fortune - not least because of all sorts of legislation and health and safety.

Suella Braverman cannot possibly be human. I hate to think what horrific experiments are happening in the lab she escaped from.
Making a shortage of housing has been a Con policy in order to increase the value of home owners properties and increase the rents that private landlords can charge. This was why Thatcher sold off council housing and stopped councils using the money from these sales to build further housing. The natural outcome of a shortage of housing is also homelessness.
Let's not forget the amount of empty properties that are owned by rich investors (often foreign), and kept as assets and collateral, instead of being used as homes. 80,000 empty properties just in London, that are owned by the super rich and are left to sit empty just so that they can borrow money against it as an asset. Whilst the people that are from this country are left to rot.
Can we just ban second homes?

Even animals have empathy towards humans, I cannot categorize what she is. So heartless.
How dare she comment on something she has no idea of. This is not a lifestyle choice but how life has affected them. We certainly owe the forces more care help and assistance than they currently get. Lets put the whole of this cruel government a whole month punishment of living on the streets to see how they survive and they do not get a tent
I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. Or maybe at a script reading for the sequel to don’t look up ! where the 3rd world war is breaking out and we are blaming homeless people for be unsightly.
I can't believe people are so cold to the homeless
It's devastating to see this level of incompassion that's so brazen yet so lewd. Anybody can be homeless.
Infact it's kind of sickening that ANYONE is sleeping without a roof over their head in 2023.
Just as the pandemic hit I was literally weeks away from this exact scenario, my housing benefit had been stopped and I had no savings whatsoever. My bills outweighed what I was on at the time and I was really scared. For her to come out and say homelessness is a "lifestyle choice" is beyond depraved and massively out of touch, she could never know what people on the lowest rung have to endure because much like the other Tories she was fed with a silver spoon and therefore doesn't cross their mind. It's no coincidence that homelessness rates rise whenever they are in power, the same happened in the latter years of Thatcher. How would she like it if she had everything stripped away from her and had to scratch and claw at everything just to see a day through?
This is sickining. My fellas mate is sleeping in our box room or he would be on the streets. He has a job (minimum wage) and cant find even a room to rent as people are wanting £750, FOR A ROOM.
He is chipping in £300 a month and without this would would have to give up our 3 bed as our rent is £1500 (other 3 beds are going for £2000).
Truth. What 'choice' is there when even when you have a job you cannot afford rent. This problem is only going to get worse.
He can choose a cheaper area for rent or try different cities.
@@irinak43 16:00 . There is no cheaper , the further you go the more you need pay travel costs on top.
What about the job? Are you being naive or heartless? @@irinak43
@@irinak43 there are cheaper towns but they have little to no jobs available (apart from care work). Commenting isn't easy, trains hardly run on time and traffic is awful.
I was reading a NY Times article today about US veterans who served in the Middle East, developed mental health issues, PTSD etc, and were dishonourably discharged from the army. Most of them couldn't hold a job, had to live on the streets, couldn't access any veterans' healthcare or pension (because of the way they were discharged) with a lot of them self-harming, contemplating or committing suicide. To tell these people 'you living on the street is a lifestyle choice' is disgraceful. But we've come to expect nothing less from her.
130,000 and 200,000 on any given night in the US … about 20-25% of the homeless
Perhaps vets Should be looked after by mod
Omg! Im so glad i bought my home 20 years ago and someone helps pay my bills i never thought i would find myself in this position
somebody should point out to cruella that HER party are wholly responsible for a fair few people actually being homeless because they simply cannot afford rent !!
Their appears to be no limits to the depth that Braverman,s sewer of a brain will sink in order to create as much division as possible and Sunak is equally to blame for everything that spews forth from her mouth for allowing her the platform.
Suella Braverman being a complete and utter scumbag is a lifestyle choice.
Ms Braverman has made the lifestyle choice to be soulless.
every city has entire blocks of flats -- free housing -- to rehabilitate ex-prisoners. the kind of people that are incapable of being civilised and sorting themselves out. somehow, that kind of housing is affordable and justified.
I had a friend we served together he lasted longer than me, he left the army ended up homeless and in the end committed suicided, this woman needs to be removed from power we have to help the homeless, vets and all the others our country fails these people of which many have fallen on hard times because of this government. in the coming months i am hoping i can start selling some pictures (i am a photographer) and raise money for charities to look after our vets, and all other homeless, as this government are only thinking about themselves no one else.
People who sleep rough must be deeply hurt by suella bravemans comments.
Exactly I think the biting cold is of more concern to them thanks to these scumbags.
How dare they choose to be homeless - instead of being abused at home, or ending thier lives. We have the same cruel politicians in NZ.
I had heard that some people have the gift of talking through their a- - - -. And Suella has proved this repeatedly.
This woman us poison, she ought to be booted out of he position.
