They asked nothing but a mug of tea - my mother who had been deported from her home in Poland to one of Stalin's gulags in Siberia before joining Ander's army had seen just about every horror you can think of - she always fed them well and helped in any small way she could. We ourselves were a poor family and I asked her once why she did it. For the 2022-23 year, the UK Benefits (welfare) spend will be about £230 billion. All public sector spending is funded in the first instance by the private sector. Always buy the more expensive British-made products, not the cheaper Chinese stuff - and don’t complain about the high prices which support the wages of those British workers who make the products. That way you’ll be supporting the UK private sector whose taxes pay for all social welfare spending in the first instance. Thanks.

When people are raised to think the state is responsible for everything they stop taking action themselves. I was born in the 60's - back then there was less of a safety net so people helped out strangers rather than let them suffer. Now everyone just complains about the government and does nothing to actually help people. That's the down side of big state society - if the state is held responsible for everything individuals are free to be irresponsible and selfish. In my experience, the poorest people are always the most generous. Middle classes virtue signal, but it's always the poorest that offer a sofa to sleep on or a meal. Probably because they know the safety net has holes in it - no matter how much people pay in taxes.
It costs an individual pennies to offer a bed for the night and a meal. It costs the state a small fortune - not least because of all sorts of legislation and health and safety.

We certainly owe the forces more care help and assistance than they currently get. Lets put the whole of this cruel government a whole month punishment of living on the streets to see how they survive and they do not get a tent

Just as the pandemic hit I was literally weeks away from this exact scenario, my housing benefit had been stopped and I had no savings whatsoever. My bills outweighed what I was on at the time and I was really scared. For her to come out and say homelessness is a "lifestyle choice" is beyond depraved and massively out of touch, she could never know what people on the lowest rung have to endure because much like the other Tories she was fed with a silver spoon and therefore doesn't cross their mind. It's no coincidence that homelessness rates rise whenever they are in power, the same happened in the latter years of Thatcher. How would she like it if she had everything stripped away from her and had to scratch and claw at everything just to see a day through?

He is chipping in £300 a month and without this would would have to give up our 3 bed as our rent is £1500 (other 3 beds are going for £2000).

I was reading a NY Times article today about US veterans who served in the Middle East, developed mental health issues, PTSD etc, and were dishonourably discharged from the army. Most of them couldn't hold a job, had to live on the streets, couldn't access any veterans' healthcare or pension (because of the way they were discharged) with a lot of them self-harming, contemplating or committing suicide. To tell these people 'you living on the street is a lifestyle choice' is disgraceful. But we've come to expect nothing less from her.
