I love to hear the sound of real mechanics working. We had stubborn bolts or parts that refused to come off or on unless you used the right names for them. They were secret names that you had to find while you were trying. I don't know why some people said we were cussing, it was just trying to find the secret name. We had what we called long winded bolts, that were usually in a position where you could only get at them with an open ended wrench, and only 1/8 or less turn on them at a time. Good times.
This is a perfect example of what a cobbled mess people bring you to fix. It’s set and gummed up or got water in it from setting yet it’s expected to run perfectly because of engine repair work. Have had the same fun troubleshooting these same issues. Fixing problems that have always existed with the machine and no heads up from the owner. Great content 👍. Real life repairs that you don’t find in a class room.
Really love it when you show these “first starts” and when you test the stuff you repair Warren. Really appreciate you taking the time and effort to record these things like you do!
She purrs like a kitten. I used to love hearing them new engines after putting everything all back together and then starting it. Nice work warren she sounds great
Curious about a couple of things: 1. Knowing the machine had been sitting for who knows how long, why didn't you have the owner drain the fuel or pay you to? 2. Knowing the machine had been sitting for who knows how long with old contaminated fuel, why didn't you open the pump, clean the pump or replace the pump? Your reputation is on the line every machine you turn out the door. You are an excellent, knowledgeable and intelligent mechanic yet you seem to overlook these no-brainer procedures. I would never ever turn a machine loose in this condition with my name on it. By the way, I'm no couch potato. I am 75 years old and I have been repairing farm and industrial equipment since I was 14. Yes, 14 because we were raised to work hard and long. I drove a tractor for 12 hours a day when I was 10 and ran a haying crew when I was 14. I learned to blacksmith, mechanic, de-horn, castrate and vaccinate cattle all by the time I was 14, so I ain't no bitchin' bellyachin' couch potato troll. I was taught that "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over". Keep the good videos coming. We all appreciate them. An honest, hard working mechanic is almost impossible to find. Be the best you can be!
Oh yeah? Well I had to plow 97 acres at 7 years old with oxen as there wasn't even steam engines yet. Ain't no sense in all these new fangled machines coming in and taking place of all the manual labor.
It’s alive!! It sounds really good. But the long start is kinda weird. I would say it is all gummed up from that nasty old diesel. But other then that, it does have a lot of life to that old grader. It always makes me feel good when an engine fires up for the first time after a total rebuild. Great vid warren! I can’t wait to see what the next project is.
Better than gold rush or oak island. You know we are on the edge of our seats to watch it grading. Just fantastic. What a season! How can you top this? You have a lot of tricks up your sleeve Warren.🔧🔧🔧
What is that I see coming out of the turbo? Is that smoke? OMG! It's running! Cool! Great job Warren! It's nice when a plan comes together. Now to see if it will move under it's own power.......
Nothing more satisfying than to crank up an engine that you have just rebuilt and listen to it run. Or the lawnmower I tore apart replacing the gasket that goes between the motor halves and getting it to run. That was a few years ago. Anyway, it's them little things that will drive you up the wall. Stay safe out there!
I love all my Cummins motors with respect wish we could talk in person or on phone . Cats are great to drive but I can't afford to own . Detroits don't have much experience. I'm alot older than you and respect proven motors Yanmars are good imports and puts them in compact tractors 5 gal a day hard working 12 hrs
Thanks showing the first start. That's my favorite thing to watch is brand new motor stating. I going to make a guess that the trany is good. Thanks for sharing.
They really did a number on that poor grader. It would be interesting to really know what they did to it. My suspicion is someone put water in the crank case verse driving it into a lake. The twp. had people throw rocks threw the windows on theirs when they parked it on a job. Overall it sounds really good! You and your son did a great job on the rebuild.
Sounds good! Definite signs of life now, just needs to get a good board full of dirt and push hard for a bit and burn that old fuel out probably. That old stuff is pretty tuff usually.

Alright! Love hearing it firing up after all your work. Look forward to footage of that road in front of the shop getting some attention from the grader. Thank you sir.
Great work. Part of me thinks why would you not flush out the tank and use fresh known good fuel rather than shitty stuff that's been laying for god knows how long and save yourself some hassle.
G'day Warren ,, Sounded a little rough on first startup,, possibly a miss on an injector ,, till injection pump primed fully . But I'm thinking your spot on (as usuall) with the diagnosis,,probable gummed up injection pump ,, sadly you often have to pull them down to clean out that stubborn brown tar-like crap that builds up with some diesel . Ya never can tell what kinda fuel has been put through them ,specially when people try saving a buck , or use alternative fuels . Go grade your road ,,put some load on it , see how it settles in . Otherwise,,a real nice job , great to see you and your son wrenching togeather . Much Respect from Down Under
Check the check valve in the banjo bolt coming out of the pump to the return line if its worn out or leaking it won't hold any back pressure in the pump ( it's not much back pressure). Could also be stuck open from old gummy fuel, my 8.3 in my kenworth was worn out and wouldn't hold back pressure anymore result in a low idle and hard starting just my two cents. Nice work as always from BC, Canuckistan
I know most all mechanics don't believe in a fix in a can but I had an issue with my duramax fuel injectors. I used diesel extreme and it turned everything 180 deg and that engine ran as good as new and starts at 25 below again. Before it wouldnt start at 15 above.
The engine sounds good. Looks like the injection pump gives low pressure in the start maybe some clogged filter in the fuel inlet to the pump. We have had many problems with alger in the fuel and in the fuel tank. Thanks for the good video!
Wow Warren. You've been busy. Last i saw you were measuring the liners on the block. We lost internet for bout 24 hours. I got some catching up to do. As always. Another grate video. Sounds like you got one of those little problem pack man running through that thing. Sounds like you got her though.
So Im a big fan of atf to clean injection/injectors out. What I do is spin the fuel filter off dump half of the fuel out and fill the rest with atf( I really like type F for this). Then start the machine, run it for a minute or so then shut it down. Let her sit for a day or so. That atf will do its magic!
I have problem with two of my tractors losing power at solenoid as well that's a common problem and also contributes to hard starting when it has sit for a couple weeks, I have to use a rubber strap to hold lever on the pump. It's intermittent so makes it hard to fix.
One of my favorite things to take the injector Part apart and cleaning them fresh new fuel a clean fuel tank and filters that electric pump sounds a bit noisy and maybe some good injector cleaner to clean out the pump
Well she is sucking air and blowing smoke and making noise YES it's alive. Congratulation doctor your patient is doing good so far just needs a little more work. Vacation time is getting close and enjoy your time away from the business.
does this grader have that hydraulic brake system with electric pump back up? i heard a familiar pump sound when blake turns the key on. man that sure is a long crank to start....did you try running off of a known good tank with good fuel. i am surprised you didnt flush the old fuel tank. sample the fuel before starting? water get in there too?
WE JUST PUT OUT A VIDEO ON OUR CHANNEL ...WE ARE AS CRAZY AS YOU ARE ...GO TO BED WARREN IT 1:30 IN THE MORNING...WE ARE GOING TO PUT OUR ENGINE IN OUR GARAGE MONDAY SO LETS PLAN ON YOU COMING OVER SOON AND GETTING THIS THING STARTED...
That have a auto shut off for low water n oil...most of that nock will go away with water in the block...harmonics got to lov the noise...haha..well she goes...get yourself a good vaky behind you an enjoy...
rebuilt heart ..giver some more blood...hit the paddles...check monitors...good colour ...she breaths ! in with the good ..out with the bad 99% better than when she came thru the emergency doors ! Now comes therapy, walking up and down the roads !
Maybe your shop isn't tight enough to worry about running the truck you should remember that carbon monoxide is cumulative or at least accumulates faster than the body can dissipate it. Therefore "minor" amounts is still dangerous for someone who works around engines all the time or a lot.
Wayne would you believe i bought some new John Deere parts and the radiator surge tank has no resemblance to mine, off a completely different model and the dealer parts people have been doing the job for years.
It sounds like it has fuel issues it had an injector knock in the beginning, wasn't Blake supposed to be taking a wrench and tapping some metal while the engine was running to freak you out there was a knocking sound LOL.
A question if you don't mind. I understand these engines will run on old fuel. It seems to me fresh fuel in this situation would be worth the trouble. Maybe start it with fresh fuel and sea foam.

The engine sounds good. Looks like the injection pump gives low pressure in the start maybe some clogged filter in the fuel inlet to the pump. We have had many problems with alger in the fuel and in the fuel tank. Thanks for the good video!
it is a lot easier to fix it in the shop with a helper than alongside the gravel roads by yourself.
We have to see it grading that road. Don't leave us hanging!

A lot of time, effort and money riding on the outcome.
I trust it will be a successful result.

Your a badass at being a mechanic bro!
The diesel motor sounds good with my subwoofers in the van cranked up.
cummins sell a good injector cleaning kit in a box, that is a plastic tank with liquid that u put the suction and return hoses into.
That strap lol keeep up the struggle man.
I had a blade like that came from an air Force Base. It had an axillary pump.

You need to put the belts on it so you can charge the batterys. You have low voltage to your shut off so.
You may want to keep your son working with you - very helpful

Considering what he bought it for and how much he's in with you I think it was a good deal?
You mentioned the milinial farmer that's one of the channels I watchh
Maybe your shop isn't tight enough to worry about running the truck you should remember that carbon monoxide is cumulative or at least accumulates faster than the body can dissipate it. Therefore "minor" amounts is still dangerous for someone who works around engines all the time or a lot.
the injection pump is oil fed and was dry inside iv heard old ones do that when they were worn out
I think that knocking sound was just a hanging plunger in the pump.
Nice good luck
Wayne would you believe i bought some new John Deere parts and the radiator surge tank has no resemblance to mine, off a completely different model and the dealer parts people have been doing the job for years.

Did you rebuild or get a reman turbocharger?
good job mr_w :-)
Bravo! What is the load whining sound just before the engine starts up, ( about 8:25 ) just curious?
Fuel pump perhaps? I'm not 100% sure
Emergency steering pump. Theres a flow switch that kicks an electric pump on to steer in the case the engine stalls

Is it the fuel pump that sounds before you start?
Know that you know what you are doing, but I get so nervous when the engine goes long without cooling ..😱
Most diesels can run quite a while even without water in the block before they get too hot...running it a few min won't hurt it at all
It is easy to forget how long the engine has been running until it gets wrong..
