    Nothing is "wrong" with you. You are just a product of this era, upbringing, experiences and the society that surrounds you. Becoming aware of that will be the first step to recognise the many ways you are being influenced and pushed in one direction or another, and then you can start working against that tide. I repeat: nothing is wrong with you!

      Thank you so much for sharing this! It's a reminder that we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. We are all products of our environment, and understanding that can lead to self-acceptance and growth. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment ❤️ Mel ps.... your words may have been made me have a little teary deary - I do appreciate your encouragement.

      100% agree. I think a system of decluttering is my likely first step? Get rid of the surplus - then create systems around maintaining them is key. I appreciate your suggestion:-)

    Fresh start lovely!!!!! I’ve moved 16 times since 2006, after spending my whole childhood in the one place (my family home) I am extremely sentimental and used to be a huge hoarder. But moving every few years has made me much better at it, and keep telling myself “fresh start; I don’t want to be responsible for this item anymore, bye!!!!”
    I’m sending you so much love and the rental crisis is terrifying (we rent too) sending strength!!!

    • @MySemiSortedLife
      @MySemiSortedLife  Před 7 měsíci

      Wow, 16 moves since 2006? You must be a pro by now! I totally get the sentimental attachment to things, but sometimes it's just time to say "bye" and move on. Sending you virtual moving boxes and good vibes! I hope I can be ruthless.

    You can do it! A roof over your family's head is more important than any physical item you could possess. Our home is small by American standards, only 1200 SF, so we have to be intentional with what we keep and what we let go.

    • @MySemiSortedLife
      @MySemiSortedLife  Před 7 měsíci

      You're absolutely right! Our home might be small, but it's cozy and filled with love. Plus, it's less square footage to clean, so that's a win in my book!

    Like you, my mum held onto lots of things. Recently they downloaded from a large house to a small bungalow. For years, id been saying to mum, the less stuff u have, the quicker cleaning is and the easier it is to find stuff and keep it tidy. We helped my parents declutter significantly before they moved and since moving in, she’s continued as shes realised the less stuff she has the easier it is to move around in the space and clean. Each time she puts an item of clothing on, if she finds it doesnt suit/damaged/ uncomfortable/ doesnt fit right she lets it go. Slowly but surely, she is going thru everything. However, that initial declutter makes a huge difference. See managing, cleaning, maintaining and moving those items as time away from the things u love like ur family and kids. Nothing is more important than them and the more you get rid of, the more time you’ll have with ur family when u do move! As someone with depression anxiety and perimenopause i sympathise but the more u do now the easier it will get. Xxx

    I just down sized last year from 2000 sq ft to 1000 sq ft. It really feels so good to lighten the amount of stuff I have. I have gotten rid of so many clothes just by being honest with myself. If I didnt like how it looks on me or makes me feel when I put it on, then out it went. Also, how many pairs of pants did I really need or how many black shirts do I need. I color coordinated my shirts & pants. I kept only the best of each color & let the rest go. When I went thru my dresser drawers, I had a vision of how I wanted each drawer to look. How many pairs of shorts do I really need? It feels so good to have things in order once you get there. I know you csn do this. Try getting rid of 50 items at a time. Put them on the table & once you've reached 50 put them in the trunk of your car. Then take them to donation center. Give yourself limits on how many glasses you really need. 2 person. 1 nice one & one plastic one. Same thing with mugs. Its so refreshing. Im cheering you on sweetheart. You got this. 😊

    I would be trying to buy the bare minimum for the home, toiletries, food, house hold cleaners. Minimise what you bring in to your home over the next few months. Less to move and could save you a bit of money by using up items 😊

    You know I’m a stationary fanatic too! I’d say rather than declutter all things stationary, commit to no new stationary coming in. Using up what you have. Going through all the pens and tossing anything that dried or used up. It’s not always about getting rid of everything but it will always be about controlling and managing what’s coming in ❤

      I know you're right... I've actually decided to pack the stationery first.... just to get it out of the way and when I'm stronger I will declutter. I want to do less cleaning and just do basic...if there was a fire, can we all get out quick...😂 I also started to get rid of my shelves. If there is no home for the stuff, then it has to go...I only allow my self two suit cases of clothes... Reality is, getting rid of more than you think you have to. I suggest watching Dana K White for helpful guidance, or even signing up for the take your house back course. But making hard decisions will give you more than you would ever think. It’s almost disproportionate how much you get from getting rid of things. And if you manage to declutter a massive amount in a month, you will open your options up and be able to take whatever place comes up because size of the home won’t be any hinderance. And whatever you do, try hard to avoid needing a storage unit! Much hope for you, and let any overwhelm be a reminder that things aren’t worth the overwhelm to your mental health. (I’m in year two of being signed up with the take your house back course and it was on sale when I joined for about $100, and each year there is a renewal of $10 to stay in)

    • @MySemiSortedLife
      @MySemiSortedLife  Před 7 měsíci

      You know what - I think you're right - I think I will sign up....I love Dana, Cas and Dawn too...The only reason I'd get a storage unit would be if we had to live in a tent or caravan in someone's backyard.... but hopefully it wont come to that. x

    Ha! This always my first tip for homemovers - do an absolutely brutal sort out - get rid of as much stuff from the house as possible. To weed down my 3 kids' toys I would ask them if there is anything they don't really play with anymore, and would they like to give it to some little boys and girls who have no toys to play with. I used to get a good response from that approach - good luck! 🥰🥰🥰 Added ..... ummm I get it about the holding onto things because of past sadness or even trauma. Me and my two sisters were brought up by an abusive and neglectful mother, she managed to throw out my favourite comfort toy when I wasn't looking. She had made several attempts but I saw her. (it was a sweet white stuffed cat toy that my father bought me when he and my mother split up, and I didn't see him again) I have since adjusted to thinking about how much I would prefer to have a clear non stressful environment, rather than chaos. Your mental health has priority over anything else 😘😘😘

    It will be OK Mel just keep telling yourself that. This has probably been a big shock to you but you are strong. Your wanting to do your best for your family and yourself will get you through this. I have seen you overcome so much and your determination to succeed is fantastic. I always have too much stuff for myself to cope with.I have a problem letting things go. I try to work out why. I think everything was done for us at home and my mother and father seem to be what we now call pretty minimilist although we had everything we needed and good quality things too. Looking back we had a car before many of the neighbours did but as a teenager I didn't have the amount of clothes that kids have these days and I wanted more. I left home with one suitcase at 17 and started married life at 18 with not much more. Does my hanging on to things of no value stem from this. I don't know.
    When in 2020 I let go of the apartment in the UK I literally let go of everything except my husband's disabled car and 4 large and 4 small suitcases as I already had things set up ready in Cyprus. I really should have taken a container with me as I had some really good things like a lovely new bed. What helped me to let go was the fact that I felt we were starting a new chapter in our lives and every I valued went to family or friends. So I have proved I can let go if I want to achieve a goal.
    Losing my darling Spyros last January 4th was devastating .I have so much paperwork and legal things to sort out as well as organising a headstone for his grave. 😢. Strangely enough I was able to let go of most of his clothes just keeping a few things for sentimental reasons.
    My problem at the moment is sorting through my own things many of which I don't really like anyway as they are worn out or not fitting or flattering. I find even the thought of it so tiring and daunting but Mel I am going to do it along with you as I want my 2nd bedroom clear so I can have my friends stay at a moments notice. At the moment there are around 10 suitcases filled with stuff so I have plenty to do.
    We can all do this . Look at this as an opportunity to have a lovely new place to live with things as you want them to be. I know you can do this if you can just get your head around this and think positively. Please pace yourself though and get enough sleep. Please let your kids help you. The older ones can decide on what they want to let go of. I love you Mel ❤

    I know it will be hard, but I did this, not this last move, but the move before from Texas to Arizona in the United States, I went through every single bin that I had in storage, and I brutally threw away a lot of stuff. The fact that it had gotten wet in a leak we didn’t know we had from our washing machine made it a little bit easier for some of the memorabilia from our college days and some of our pictures because they literally were filled with black mold, however, it was still hard to part with. I had enough Christmas decorations for three houses… And so I gave away 50% of it before I packed away the rest. When I moved to Arizona, all of my stuff fit into the truck, I had rented to make the move. That had not always been the case… You will feel much better moving into a different house if you have way less stuff. Also, houses are so different from each other that the storage solutions you have in this particular home may not work in the new one. I did save all of my little bins that were plastic that I could move from here to there but I got rid of storage furniture. All in all I know it’ll be hard but it will be good for your well-being in your mind if you can make that kind of a cut for the next house.
    I feel you on the clothes!! my size goes up and down and I have to keep a variety of sizes which is very frustrating. I wish I could just wear the same clothes forever! The things I really loved I’ve had to get rid of. I so feel this video in the clothing area.

      It's really hard at the minute because there's 100s of families looking - we have a very large refugee community in my town, as well as being a University town that attracts a lot of International students so LOADS of competition. Basically what you do is jump on a website and see what's available - all through multiple real estate agents and you book to view the place. Then you put in an application with your income and references and the agent weeds out any they don't want to present to the landlord and then the landlord is given final choice. Landlords naturally want stability - which on paper we look good - but with so much competition dozens of people could look like our application and some of the refugee families have government subsidies (rightly so) which make them an easy choice as it gives landlords a guarantee of rent being paid whereas average local families can be a bit of a risk....Then you effectively pay weekly rent to the real estate - two weeks in advance. You also have to have 4 weeks "bond" and the only appliances in a home is the oven and sometimes a dishwasher (maybe an air con?). Everything else you take to the rental. It's tough... but - it will be ok...

Your landlord won't let you stay there with a rent increase? It sounds like another place will be more rent also. I live in WNY in senior apartments and our rent is going up every year because we pay below the market value in NYS. The rent, I believe, will not increase in one lump sum but over a period of time. I was thrown when it was going to be $20 more per month. I feel for you and your family and I wish I could make an donation but being a senior, divorced limits my spending. Tragically - and I didn't want to say this on the video (I actually cut it out because it's hard to say much less hear.)
