That polyphonic tone is so unusually beautiful
Diana is a choir.
Her voice does not get taxed when she sings low because that is her natural space and position as a Contralto, she does strain when she goes very high but she has trained herself so much that she can easily go extremely high too, she can go lower and a lot higher than what she does in "can't help falling in love" her lowest notes are around A2 and her highest in a song is a 4 second straight crystal clear D6.
It is Diana not Die-ana simple.
She's definitely not using her tongue to get that low there are other videos of her singing where you can see the back of her throat. Also she has a very unusual subharmonic or overtone when she sings in some ranges

The lower register is where she is comfortable, by her own admission. The highs are where she had to really put in work especially after puberty hit. Even her speaking voice has a multi tonal/octave thing going on. She has also said that if your vocal training is good, then a vocalist should be able to sing without getting tired or taxed

Diana and Dimash are the two artists on top of my most respected artist for their talent. She is so lovely and humble. She has chosen to manage her career in a way where she is not overwhelmed by fame. She has anxiety and the experience in the Russian version of the Masked Singer was a bit much for her. Tommy Profitt is the author of a dark/minor/low version of an old French ditty. But does anyone know who Tommy is? So, thanks to Diana and her Moscow team, we learned more about what is happening in the world around us. This performance is Diana's first appearance at an adult competition (she just turned 18 years old). And she opens the first round (out of 9) with this brilliant (beautiful and smart) performance and determines the level of the entire competition. The judges are mostly other competing (and more established) singers, so they now understand what a surprise this dark horse Diana is. Needless to say, Diana won her first adult competition (on Russian television), showing that she is unique and fluent in many musical genres.

Her name is Julia Parshuta. She is a very accomplished and successful professional singer. The other contestants were likewise professionals. She came fourth and many people have reacted to performances she gave on the show.

Dr Dan, sorry for the length of this comment, but there is a lot of background information along with specific information about Diana Ankudinova and this performance. This was a vocal competition called the “ShowMaskGoOn”, that she competed on when she was only 18 years old. This competition was held over a nine week period one episode per week starting on September 25, 2021 until the Season finale on November 20, 2021. Diana competed against 8 other professional singers, and when you include Diana, the numbers of singer's totals 9. Also, all were members of the judging panel. For each individual performance the judges awarded judging points to each other, but not to themselves. Each singer was required to perform a different song during each of the nine weeks, and for each song they had to use a different genre and a different style of music.
One of the 9 songs Diana performed was her cover of the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, which was her first song of the competition. This performance demonstrated what many vocal professionals had previously speculated. Diana Ankudinova was no longer developing into a Contralto, she is now performing as a true contralto voice type. For those that may not know, a contralto is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto is very, very rare. Diana opens “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, in her low, deep, and resonant contralto voice.
During a past interview Diana said she was not happy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and that kept her out of the more prestigious Russian music academies. She decided, along with her voice teacher to concentrate on improving and extending her upper range.
Now to answer a very commonly asked question about Diana’s voice. Vocal range is one of many points used in defining a female singer's voice type. At age 13, when she competed on “The Voice Kids Russia” in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5, a solid Alto range, but still quite low for the vast majority of 13 year old girls. In 2021, 5 years later at age 18, during her “ShowMaskGoOn” performance of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, Diana’s vocal range was again measured. Her vocal range now measures from a low of C3 (male tenor range) to a high of B♭5 (Mezzo Soprano range). The improvement and extension of her upper range is also on full display during the middle part of this performance.
But it's not just how high or low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in both her upper and lower registers, and her ability to transition seamlessly between her lower, mid, and upper registers. It's in her timbre, the roundness, fullness, and depth of her voice. It’s her ability to create, access, and use an enormous amount of resonance that define Diana as a “Dramatic Contralto” which is the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type, and is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types. The depth and power of her full Dramatic Contralto chest voice is on full display during the final section of her performance.
So the question is, how does she do it? How can this young female singer achieve the low, round, rich, deep, resonant, and profound sound we hear? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing these low notes to actually see what is or is not happening, we can only speculate. But the general conciseness of many vocal professionals seems to attribute Diana’s unique vocal ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning Diana was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than the vast majority of female singers. Her larynx (voice box), also appears to be larger, and her oral cavity (mouth) is larger, plus her pharynx (throat), similarly appears to be longer and wider than the fast majority of most female singers. This combination of vocal anatomy gives Diana the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, full sounds that along with her unique tone quality makes her stand out, but without actually scoping her vocal track, there is no way to be 100% sure.
To conclude, near the end of Diana’s performance the judge on the top row who is the first to stand is the well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan, who was invited to be a guest judge. Yusif is also married to the world famous Russian opera soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. A fellow judge and competitor, Julia Parshuta, the blond woman standing in the center row dressed all in red is a well known Russian contemporary singer. Julia Parshuta looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total bewilderment and disbelief. Finally, the 9 week competition concluded on November 20, 2021, with Diana Ankudinova being awarded the most judging points from the other competitors over the 9 weeks, and she was declared the winner of this series of nine programs.

It’s easier for Dee Anna to sing lower than higher notes. She has worked very hard after puberty to maintain and even expand her vocal range. I love her two Live Performances in Moscow celebrating Hans Zimmer’s OST’s “No Time To Die” and “Dune”. I would encourage you to react to more of her music. Этот австралийский музыкант порадовался тому, что услышал красивый низкий голос - и посетовал, что в музыкальной традиции Запада такие голоса сейчас не популярны. Наша поп-музыка во многом копирует эту западную традицию, хотя в Советском Союзе было довольно много хороших низких голосов - и мужских, и женских. В эпоху Элвиса Пресли таких голосов было достаточно и на Западе. Доминирование рок-музыки эту традицию сильно изменило в сторону высоких голосов, а главное - сделало почти обязательной демонстрацию экстремально высоких нот. Где бы сейчас был Джо Дассен? Я даже за Магомаева не вполне уверен... А перед Дианой Анкудиновой стоит серьёзная дилемма: как ей по-настоящему использовать свой уникальный дар. То, что мы сейчас услышали в её исполнении, а также ряд других впечатляющих номеров на разных шоу - это не только результат правильного выбора продюсеров, - это результат правильной работы аранжировщиков. В своём собственном творчестве она - насколько пока об этом можно судить - не сможет использовать свою низкую тесситуру сколько-нибудь всерьёз. В песнях, написанных для неё другими профессиональными музыкантами, мы этого тоже пока не услышали. С этим вообще сложно работать; возможно, здесь требуется выход за рамки поп-музыки - и к этому ещё никто не готов. Услышим ли мы что-либо, подобное если не "Human", то как минимум "Personal Jesus" или "Wicked Game" - не в смысле качества музыки, а в смысле именно вокальной работы? Это вопрос. Артист, обладающий настолько редкими способностями в определённой области, должен, как мне кажется, использовать их хотя бы время от времени. Надеюсь, что она просто ждёт подходящего случая, чтобы это сделать. Сделать - ещё раз - то, на что никто, кроме неё во всём мире не способен.....

Так, точно. Я думаю Диана найдёт репертуар где сможет использовать снова по полной программе свой низкий голос.
в "Улетай на крыльях ветра" нижний регистр использован лишь чуть-чуть - в качестве контраста к основной более высокой (звенящей!) теме, но как же красиво! а в "Sweet Dreams", наоборот, высокий регистр очень кратко оттеняет основную более низкую тональность. На меня эта лаконичность Дианы в использовании ее возможностей производит огромное впечатление. Это своего рода аристократизм мастера высшей пробы.
Наверху она тоже хороша. Но песни она себе пишет под намного более высокие ноты, поёт ниже, что-то теряется.
Между прочим, судьба оперных контральто - это более редкие спектакли и исполнение мужских партий, если подходящего спектакля нет.
Так что это совершенно обычные проблемы исторически.
Не вижу очень большой проблемы. Голос контральто по нотам соотвествует мужскому тенору. Да и хиты, которые исполнены Дианой и у всех на устах это как раз из мужских репертуаров. Просто под тех же теноров песен не мало, так что мешает писать песни как под контральтовый диапазон, так и выше. Да,немногие современные композиторы способны создавать масштабные произведения. Но определенно появится. Есть нитка, найдется и иголка.
This show is a competitio n where the contestants are also the judges. They perform for 9 rounds in different genres and they judge each other. Diana is, by far, the youngest, all others are seasoned professionals. In each rounds there is one guest Judje, in this case it was the guy who stood up. He is Yusif Eyvazov, an Azerbaijani opera singer, also husband of Ana Netrebko, a Russian opera diva.

As Kwastas_Vagias said, she's very comfortable in that lower range as it's her natural tone, she had to work to create the higher notes actually. The show she's on is called "the show mask go on." if I remember correctly. She's being judged by other singers who also compete in the show, and some of them were masters in operatic composition (the guy who stood up.) So it tells you something of her abilities if THEY were so blown away. 😊

The arrangement is by American composer/producer Tommee Profitt. While is probably best known for being the producer behind rapper NF, his main focus is actually "sync" music, i.e. music for film, TV, advertising etc. He's done a few "dark" covers of famous songs and they're all quite brilliant. He also put together the most insanely epic Christmas concern that's ever been uploaded to the internet: The Birth of King: Live in Concert" - there are some absolutely amazing vocal performances in that.
Anyway, I'm sure his music has been used in plenty of other Russian TV shows, but I'd be curious to know how it got to this performance. Did she find it and want to do it, or did someone familiar with both bring them together? If I didn't know that there was a version published previous to this performance, I would assume it was made just for her because it fits so well.
It's DEEAnna AnnCooDEEnova. This one is a great demo of her ability but my fav. from this competition is "The Crow". It shows her as a performer and is quite feral. Last year she released her original "The Day You" which is musically her best so far. There is a duet with Brandon Stone but I prefer her solo.

The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.

This was the final performance of the night of the first show of a 9 week singing show with 9 singers performing each week and also judging each other. Diana was voted the winner on this first night and was voted the winner of the 9 week show. She was 18 years old at the time, 20 now.

Diana, a unique singer, songwriter and actress from Russia was born in May, 31. 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She is 1,65m/ 5,41ft tall.
Diana has something primal, mystical, but also sensitive and sensual in her voice and she lives her songs. She also has a perfect pitch and her sense of rhythm was exceptional even as a little girl. Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest and lowest female voice type. Her voice has natural polyphonic overtones and sometimes specifically an undertone = sub harmonic. (You hear the voice an octave lower than Diana sings. It's not that you hear a clear tone straight away, it's more that you feel like there's something in Diana's voice or the song has been edited. Not everyone can hear that.)

The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard and successful to bring back the lost high notes and even expanded her vocal range, currently from C3-D7 (4,1 octaves!). Her genres are folk rock, folk pop, but also jazz, soul, blues, evergreens... and always in the unique Diana style... Tradition meets modernity.
Since singing a cover can be very expensive, Diana often sang very old songs. This secured her the love and gratitude of older listeners and revived the old songs. Today she sings more and more songs of her own or written for her in a wide variety of genres. She also wins the hearts of young people with her versatility.
She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically. She only speaks Russian, so far. She plays the piano and ukulele. During 2008 to 2012 Diana sang around 40 songs, including at competitions.
Her mom, Irina Ponik, turned her whole life inside out and started all over with a new motherhood and many new professions - seamstress, manager, vlogger… admirable.
Everything that has to do with Diana's singing training, performances, competitions, looking for sponsors is organized and coordinated by her mother Irina Ponik. She took extra sewing courses too. Since then, she's been sewing all of Diana's stage costumes, because all of these things consume the family budget.
Irina accompanies her daughter on trips and captures her life in photos and videos with the persistence of a visionary. It is admirable how she promotes her daughter's career, teaching her how to fly but makes sure that she is down to earth Remains. Diana impressed with her talent in over 50 national and international competitions. Her confidence grew, her voice continued to develop ... until one day she was asked to compete in more distant competitions so that other children could have a chance to win.

The next day, a huge scandal erupted on social media. A door had closed, but a new door opened...
In 2018 and 2019 Diana entered a competition 'You are Super and won twice. That project is unique in the world, an international TV- competition especially for adopted and orphaned children.
The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to CZcams and soon Diana had millions of fans.
The project producers help the finalists to start their studies and promote their creativity. Diana won a scholarship and Igor Krutoy (Russian music titan, billionaire, juror and sponsor) gave her a small apartment (37m²/ 398.26 ft²) in Moscow. There she lives with her mother and grandmother and was able to start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy. (She died of Covid-19 in October 2020). Her Russian fans helped her and found a new voice coach: Alexandra Pismennaya (Sasha), who was a student of Prof. Donskoy. She and Diana are on the same wavelength and even became friends.
2020 Diana graduated from high school with honors as an external student a year earlier as “normal”, applied to music colleges and was rejected (examiners suspected she had a voice defect). But she is normal and healthy. Now she is a student at the university, at the legendary Russian State Institute for Theater and Variety Arts (Juilliard similar to GITIS).
In October 2021 Diana was invited to her first adult contest on Russian television 'The ShowMaskGoOn'. She won!!!
In December 2021, Dianas released her first CD with great success. Maestro Krutoy had introduced Diana to the excellent singer, songwriter and producer Brandon Stone. With Maria Tarasenko (songwriter), the trio created the 9 songs of the album and received gold in June 2022.
