  • In a comprehensive vocal analysis, Dr Dan delves into the mesmerising performance of "Broken Vow" by Lara Fabian, who is also the songwriter of this iconic piece. Dr Dan highlights key elements such as vowel shaping, stage presence, and mic technique, underscoring the multi-layered artistry involved in a live performance. He particularly notes Lara Fabian's skilful breath management and her mastery over her vocal folds, demonstrating how she successfully navigates the emotional terrain of the song without letting it escalate too quickly.
The video also touches upon Lara's unique mic technique, which shows her deep understanding of how to effectively use technology as part of her art form. Dr Dan encourages viewers to not only appreciate the technical aspects but to also engage emotionally with this beautifully written ballad.

⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

Celine, more precisely her late husband, is the reason Lara is not known in the US and has been banned by their joint record company Sony: he knew from Quebec experience that Lara would soon more than challenge Celine on the ballad lane.
Lara has nothing to envy Celine on the vocal side: they both have some similarities in the vowel pronunciation, sharing french as their native language, but Lara’s tone is less nasal, is fuller and more resonant.
And when it comes to storytelling, acting and emotions conveying, Lara is second to none.
With Celine you feel part of a big event and you are impressed. But not really moved. With Lara you are deeply touched, you feel you have an intimate one-to-one soul-to-soul conversation. She can channel all type of emotions.
Add to this her songwriting capabilities in several languages.
And her humility, benevolence and empathetic approach of her counterparts. Her desire to share her knowledge and coach the young generation.
For me, Lara is only in a league of her own.
No surprise she is an idol or an inspiration for the like of Dimash, Diana Ankudinova, Polina Gagarina, …

a Lara Fabian video is a " master class " in performance art - her mastery of tonal quality, diction, body movements, breath control, and emotional connection all are on display for all to enjoy. Audiences, each member , feel as though she is singing to them alone and she is inviting them to join her into the journey of the song. For me, anyway, Lara Fabian is " The Ultimate Artist ". She is incredible !

Lara Fabian certainly has a remarkable presence on stage, and many would agree that her performances can be described as a master class in the art of performance. Her control over tonal quality, clear diction, expressive body language, and the ability to emotionally connect with the audience are qualities that set apart great artists. It's not just the technical excellence, but the way she makes each audience member feel personally serenaded that truly showcases her artistry. It's clear she has left a significant impression on you, and that’s the mark of an artist who has mastered their craft.

I like the walking away and coming back. It feels like part of the story and the song. She's telling us the story of her heartache, and her walking off to me feels like she's almost done, but then she gets hit by her own emotion again, and she needs to turn around, she needs to get out this gruelling line "I'd give away my soul to hold you once again, and never let this story end." It's like a volta in a poem. Until that time she is talking about letting him go, letting him fly...and then she comes back with the juxtaposition of never wanting to let him go. It's reason against heart, or reality versus fantasy. It's the double edged sword of love, I suppose.

Lara Fabian was born gifted with such a talent for singing. PLUS, she was very well trained by the best opera teachers from Belgium and Italy, but she decided to sing pop songs, she also has the knowledge to sing in operatic way, she studied from her 8 to 18 at the Belgium Conservatory of Music (there she learned Bel Canto, piano [she composes her own songs on piano), she started singing professionaly at the age of 15, in 1985, her first video clipe came when she turned 16, in 1986 and her first world wide album was released at the begin of 1990. Then since 1998 she kept having vocal lessons with her Italian teacher untill nowdays, she has two vocal teachers (From Belgium and Italy) and she keeps having vocal lessons at least 3 times per week on-line. Lara also has been working as a vocal coach on The Voice Canada, she already worked as the vocal coach at the Star Academy program in France from 2004 /2008. Please react to Lara Fabian - Llora live in Kremlin 2010 (Llora means cry in English). She speaks fluently and composes in 4 languages (English, Spanish, Italian and French), but she is able to speak and understand a little bit of Russian, Dutch and Portuguese, she already sang live in 12 languages. She has many live performances holding notes like C5 and D5 for over 12 seconds, in chest mixed voice, eben C5 for 20 seconds in chest voice. Her live vocal range is Eb3 - G#6, in Studio D3 - B6. But most of all she's a storyteller white performing, she's gives everything everytime. So emotional.
    Thank you.

    Dr Dan.
Firstly, about that move of Lara moving towards the Orchestra and back...
At this point (of the story) Lara's emotions took over...there was more to tell, so she had to muster courage to say it but say it more forcefully.
That's all part of the brilliance of her performance because, guess what. When she returned to take up position, she had the attention of her audience too, exactly where they needed to be in her story. It's like "Hey, are you going to pay attention!"
    That is masterclass.
Secondly, I need to thank you for saying she "reminds" you of someone else. I highly appreciate that because it's not about Who, but about What and How. I really like your reaction, so I will definitely check out more of yours on Lara Fabian.

It is not the voice or the way of singing of Celine Dion...
It is the very beautiful, very strong but velvety voice in all its 4.5 octaves of the lyric soprano Lara Fabian....Endless breath and breath control with seamless connection of words and sentences ... She can manipulate her voice as she wants .
What is also striking is the large orchestra that remains in the background and lets her strong voice prevail .... In contrast to other singers where the singing voice disappears in the music.
.Lara's voice is at its best only with the accompaniment of a piano, guitar or violin....

The music of Broken Vow was co-composed by Walter Afanassiev and Lara Fabian.
Walter Afanassiev, an american/brazilian from russian descent, is a legendary composer and producer (he composed some of the greatest initial hits of Mariah Carey such as All I Want for Christmas is You or Hero and was the producer of the Titanic soundtrack that brought Celine Dion to WW fame). He is also now the producer of Dimash for his US career.
When this song was composed, Walter and Lara were engaged, they were living in San Francisco’s bay area, but apparently he cheated and she decided to break up. When she took this decision, that she knew would dramatically change both her personal and professional destiny, she wrote these incredible lyrics.
Lara has said this is her preferred english song from all the songs she wrote in this language (there are many, and some are pure jewels).
One reason is also because this song has then been covered by the greatests:
    - Barbra Streisand (she performed it in concerts from one of her tour but never recorded it),
    - Josh Groban (his cover made this song famous in US, she is her friend and role model and he made several duets with her),
    - Linda Eder,
    - Cakra Khan,
    - Gigi de Lana,
    - Regine Velasquez,
    - Almira (from 4th Impact),
    - Katrina Velarde,
    - Julie Anne San Jose,
    - Sarah Geronimo,
    - Morissette Amon,
    - Petra Berger,
    - Harrison Craig,
    - Rimar,
    - Jackie Evancho,
    - …
For Jackie Evancho, and at the request of Jackie's parents who found the original lyrics were not a good fit for a young girl, Lara rewrote Broken Vow in french as "Imaginer" with a complete different meaning.
But the original from Lara remains the absolute reference

Majority of people think it's a Josh Groban's song. Even in media you can see it reported to be his song. It annoys me how superficial and uneducated people, especially the ones who are supposed to ''spread the knowledge'' are. Selfabsorbed, allknowing....
If you ask 100 random people, a lot more will know Josh Groban than Lara. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slandering Josh, he is not responsible for people's shallowness, he is a great singer, I really like him.
BTW, I learned about him because of this song. I wanted to hear it so I typed it in, browser gave me Josh's version. I listened to it and I must say I liked it. He performed it really well. And he never appropriated it, he just performed it and did it justice. It's just the people who are too superficial and (self)uneducated who wrongly attribute it to him.
And, yes, I totally agree with the words at the end:''She is a real deal''. Damn right!

It’s a common occurrence in the music industry for certain songs to become widely associated with artists who may not have originally performed them, especially when their versions gain substantial popularity. It’s understandable that it can be frustrating when the original artist doesn't receive the recognition they deserve. Josh Groban's talent and respectful approach to the music he performs is certainly commendable. It’s great that through his rendition, you were able to discover and appreciate the original artist as well. @@DrDanRobinsonThank you for your kind words, sir!
Being an author myself, a totally different kind, it is a bit of a toutchy subject to me. Some people don't see it as, perhaps, I do.
Covers are an interesting subject. A quite controversial and divisive, contradictory at times. It all depends on intent and recognizing the autorship. When a cover is done respectfully and the performer recognizes the original author, especially if they give it their own spin, the cover can be recognited as a tribute to original, but, unfortunately, mostly some take some other's work to boost themselves.
OTOH, there are some covers that became more popular than the originals.

I totally understand what you're saying, also as a songwriter myself I understand on a deep level. But let's look at it from another perspective, through Lara, and the very important skill of making a cover song your own. Her biggest example, Je Suis Malade. It is the ultimate example of making a song your own. People always assume it's her song, based on her own personal experience, and fans are good and respectful about correcting them. She also did the same thing to Love By Grace. Who knows that it was written by Dave Loggins for Wynonna Judd? I didn't know that for a long time, I was sure it must be hers. Lara makes us all fall in love with her and we feel very protective of her because she gives us so much on a personal, intimate level, so your feelings are relatable. It can be frustrating also because we know she should be so better well known and appreciated than she is, and all of that plays into it as well. Covers done well are tricky business, and all we can do is politely correct people while appreciating the skill of the one reimagining the song.

    More information on Lara Fabian:
Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
    • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total
    • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for 200+ songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer.
    • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
    • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today.
She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada.
She had been living for years in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship. She just moved
back to Italy a few months ago (temporarily?).
She became very famous in Quebec and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US.
This concert is legendary, packed with masterpieces (covered by many great vocalists later on).
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is absolutely massive in Russia for instance.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months and become a recurrent in the local singing contests since then.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban (they are friends and he told she is a role model for him), Linda Eder, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
    She is Dimash's idol:
I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
He covered many of her songs, most of these were composed by Igor Krutoy and written by by Lara.
Out of my mind I can list:
    ○ Adagio (She wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Mademoiselle Hyde (she wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Love of Tired Swans (she wrote the song in French under the title "Je t'aime encore" and was the original performer of the french then the russian versions, Dimash covered the russian version)
    ○ Ascolta La Voce / Vocalize (this was a pure vocalization and she was the original performer, then lyrics were added for Dimash and it was rebranded as "Know")
She also wrote the lyrics of Dimash's song "Your Love".
And she covered "Love is like a dream" before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva).
Finally, they also performed "Ti Amo Cosi" together, in trio with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo then again later with Dmitri and Alina Yarovaya, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara.
Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it.
Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs, some have Lara as a role model and big inspiration:
    ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio),
    ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime),
    ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie),
    ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace),
    ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow),
    ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow),
    ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow),
    ○ Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Adagio),
    ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime),
    ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade),
    ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gigi de Lana (Broken Vow)
    ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Adagio, Broken Vow),
    ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow, Know),
    ○ Il Divo (Adagio)
    ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you),
    ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow)
    ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso),
    ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie),
    ○ Amir (Je t’aime),
    ○ Vitas (Adagio),
    ○ Anastasia Luna (Adagio),
    ○ Jeck (Je T’Aime),
    ○ Evgenia Fanfara (Adagio),
    ○ Anna Eriksson (Je suis malade),
    ○ Choi Sung Hoon (Je suis malade),
    ○ Soprano Turetsky band (Adagio)
    ○ Majda Roumi (Adagio),
    ○ Harrison Craig (Broken Vow),
    ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow),
    ○ Katerina Maslova (Je t’aime, I guess I loved you)
    ○ Sevara Nazarkhan (Je t’aime)
    ○ ....
NB: Lara did cover Caruso , Je suis malade, and Love by grace, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version.
Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature.
In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular.
On April and May 2023 she had again a wonderful concerts in Tbilissi, Georgia, and in Ouzbekhistan and Kazakhstan.
Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

You still don't mention Lara's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 in Dublin/Ireland when she was 18 years old....She represented LUXEMBOURG and came fourth....
She sang her song festival song "croire" in several languages, including German (!!) and sold tens of thousands of copies....
Only then did she meet Rick Allison and only then did she move to Canada whit Rick....

@@user-hs1ti6uv1f I know all this but my comment is already so long that I made some shortcuts.
Before Eurovision she already had released a record “L’Aziza est en pleurs”, a tribute to Daniel Balavoine who died a few months before.
During the Eurovision she fell in love with the irish participant and flew after the contest to Ireland, without her parents knowing it.
She wrote Si tu m’aimes following this experience.
There are many things to say but I tried to not tire potential readers.

Lara's mother tongs are French and Italian and think that inspires her English in the text and performance. My guess it could be a French song.

The “something about it” part is because it is the human condition… everyone has had their heart broken. People have been divorced, cheated on, lied to. There is not a person on this planet who hasn’t been hurt at some point in their life.
