In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we travel to Lake Cumberland, Kentucky, in search of a lost Robinson R22 Helicopter after it crashed in 2002 during the filming of a poker run.
NTSB Factual Report
On September 7, 2002, about 1230 eastern daylight time, a Robinson R-22B, N707RG, was substantially damaged after it impacted a lake and sank while maneuvering near Jamestown, Kentucky. The certificated commercial pilot and passenger were not injured.
Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed for the aerial photography flight conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.
According to a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, the helicopter was being utilized by a photographer to take pictures of boats during a race conducted on Lake Cumberland.
The pilot said the helicopter was about 200 feet above the lake, and he had been flying for more than an hour, when he spotted a boat that was not previously photographed.
The pilot made a left turn and began a decent to keep pace with the boat. He further stated:
"...I noticed an abnormal sink rate and put in aft cyclic. The rate did not arrest, so I brought in more aft cyclic along with collective power. As I came into about 50 to 100 feet agl, I heard a low RPM warning horn. I continued to slow the [helicopter], while rolling on throttle. The descent rate brought the [helicopter] in contact with the water."
The helicopter sank and came to rest at a depth of about 115 feet. It was not recovered.
The pilot reported approximately 1,437 hours of total rotorcraft flight experience, which included about 650 hours in make and model.
The helicopter was maintained under a manufacturer’s inspection program and was inspected the day before the accident. It had been operated about 7 hours since the inspection. The helicopter was manufactured in 2001 and had accumulated about 505 hours since new.
NTSB Probable Cause
The pilot's failure to maintain the proper descent rate, which resulted in low rotor rpm and a collision with water.
While we did not recover the sunk helicopter this time, we are heading back in January with another search team and very hopeful that we will succeed this time in finding the helicopter and bringing it to the surface.

newer viewer here, My pop worked for Robinson from 81 to 3 years ago, he was lead crash investigator for the company, so he probably got the call on this crash. I will ask him if he remembers this crash. Likely since the helicopter was never recovered he never went to the crash since there is nothing to inspect to find out if it was equipment or pilot error. If FAA said it was likely pilot error and it's in FAA records then obviously that's the determination.
Glad the pilot made it for him to tell the story, and Kudos to you guys for getting something else out of the waterways in the country.
Thank you for your dedication to helping so many families that have been torn with not knowing. You guys are wonderful.
Tammy and Dennis are the best! Continued admiration for the crew and friends! Stay safe.
In one of your videos you mentioned needing a word that is appropriate in all cases. You the word "motivated" it works in all situations whether happy or sad. Love you guys
Use the word

Great video , and finally an explanation of what we see on the screen , that my D.A can understand . These two have averaged 7 people recovered a yr . That is deserving of support . Any and ALL who did NOT forward the rewards offered , are 100 % POS !!
Your videos are better than most movies I have watched😁

Helicopter Chasers... Tackle Box Recovery.... 😂
Lol 🥰
The only thing I could find about the helicopter incident, from September 7th, 2002, was that it was a Robinson R-22B that supposedly suffered engine failure and the pilot could not recover from the decent. It went down at 36.903056°N 85.024167°W. Tail number is N707RG. Also stated that it came to rest at a depth of 115 feet and was never recovered. Don't give up just yet there fellas. You just know where the helicopter is not.
LOL that was a good pun Sam. "This is so croppy"
Crappie”
@@baconslasher0904 thanks. I didn't realize I spelled it wrong because I'm not really a fishing person. When I was a kid my parents fished but it was just for salmon, bass and trout so we never fished for crappie :) I honestly have never seen the name of that fish spelled out before I know I've heard of it :) so at least now I know how to spell it correctly :)
Lol I read this just as Sam says it, literally.
U Guy's are what makes this world a better place, , thanks for your time and effort.
Outstanding to hear everyone you are looking for the helicopter
OMG you guys are the best, every day I watch you the next video to see what you find next... Love you all🤟🏻💜❤️🖐🏻
Grew up on Lake Cumberland still have land and house their. My dad worked for Lake Cumberland until he retired and still lives there. If you truly knew was in Lake Cumberland you might think twice before going into the water. There are vehicles in the water I know near the damn and catfish bigger than vehicles.
I just love Tammy and Dennis
There’s apparently a scuttled submarine in the patuxent river here in southern Maryland, a coworker of mine saw it on sonar and knows the location
What!? That’s so cool. I don’t live live far (Millersville) What part of the Patuxent, do you know?

At least you tackled something!
My grandparents worked with the coastguard back in the day. These folks remind me of them, lot of smarts and cute. 🤗
Y'all deserve REWARDS!!!..... What a shame on folks that pull them.
That's just what I was thinking. How shady removing them. Why provide a reward if you have no intention of paying them.
Rewards are Normally Held in Escrow before Offers can be be made if Law Enforcement is involved.
I dont fully understand that myself if a family offers a reward AWP finds that missing person why can't they receive the reward it keeps em going with expenses costs of travel equipment......if it's the law reward and they put it up why can't AWP receive it??? Am I wrong????
@@mariaslavinski2693 I totally agree with you. Otherwise, where does it end up??
@@kaydavis2310 I myself would love to no if AWP finds missing persons and solves the case and an award is given for any info why can't they receive it clearly the ppl they found never would of been. Law enforcement puts it up they won't give it to them but a family could wish someone who knows would tell us cuz it really needs to be answered????
I was expecting a toy helicopter in that tackle box lol
Brilliant episode!! I love all you guys for everything you do ! That was crazy how that log resembled the length and shape of the rotars of that helicopter! Well at least you got a tackle box out of it 😂, Big shout out to Team Watters for their dedication looking for lost loved ones ❤️and hanging out with you guys 😂, you are all amazing, Stay safe, take care much love and respect from me to you all ❤️🙏❤️
Well if at first you don't succeed, this is right up there with the snow cat recovery lots of anticipation..
AWP's tackle box = Geraldo Rivera's safe episode!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just kidding!
LOVE YOU GUYS!
What a suspense! Humor! Education. Personalities. Disappointments. All wrapped into one video. Great job! I loved the ending! 😂
Dan, great editing! I’m assuming you did the editing..👍👍

Super excited to see the Watters couple. I'll from Bethalto originally and went to the same high school as Tammy (I'm 5 years younger :) ) Also retired from Madison County Sheriff's office. It's a small world
I used to fly 22s and they’re such twitchy little helos. Surprised there are not more accidents. Glad you guys can provide closure to so many families

Sure love watching you guys doing God's work. Ya'll are so awesome.
Looking like a skinny Willie Robertson
awesome work love you guys
Lake Cumberland is a fun place I am from Ohio and went with a friend before thanks for all you guys do!
My family lives there and 3 of them are local law enforcement, so I have put a call in to see if they know if it has been recovered or not. I will update you as soon as I hear back from them. Keep up the good work.
Right on Carla. 💙🙏💜🌞
Found out that the helicopter has not been recovered.
If nobody got hurt or killed then local police probably wouldn't need to get involved, this is more of insurance company getting the information so someone can't sell it.
@@trentbresler3179 local law enforcement would be initial control over the incident until FAA/NTSB shows up on scene (I’ve been involved with numerous crashes/incidences over the years).
Come to Smyrna, TN!
Hey guys new to subscribe can't believe all the defensive law enforcement I've seen in these videos as a former active duty marine when off deployment and stationed on camp pendleton I worked with 2 seperate cities police in locating suspects after physically being involved in the attempted robberies and they thanked me every step of the way as well as my small town in ga city population 15000, 32 active duty police officers and some more sheriff's have been very grateful and forthright with giving credit for my situational awareness that led to an armed robber being arrested right after he walked into the convenience store I've talked men down from making terrible decisions and lost a couple friends to the country's favorite taboo ptsd I really appreciate adventures with purpose work and hope yall continue to help and heal those who need closure with Nicholas Allen the right word is confident... you are very confident you've found the vehicle.

I thought that fire department had a fisherman find this on sonar a short distance from where you were searching?
you guys still looking for the helicopter still and you guys are doing a great job and team waters is a wonder company to work with when it comes to helping you find love ones that is missing
Wow have fun boys
Thanks Sam now I know you almost like me. Very good video. Loved it.
The way you tackled the box question was just fishing for laughs. Seems kind of fishy to me 🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant dale. 🤣😄
🤣🤣🤣🤣
To funny Sam, that was good.
It’s also prudent to note that most rewards for a missing person don’t come from family, they can be from local authorities and community organizations. So for fans out there of any of the rescue crews / teams don’t feel any hostility towards the families of the missing person, as they will most likely not know that a reward wasn’t paid. Keep up the goos work everyone, at least you are making a difference out there !
Wish I would of known you all was in Kentucky I would of brought you all lunch!
Donated!
Thanks mate!
These videos do not help my fear of deep water, but holy crap I love AWP. Even if I have to hide from some of the underwater shots. lol
Some find it Hard to Believe a Hilocopter goes Missing but so is a 1/2 Billion💰Malaysian Jetliner.
Right. That is crazy how it just disappeared.
You guys should check out cour d' alene lake in Idaho. There's a huge boat graveyard in the lake. It is also very beautiful there.
That was really sad to hear about the rewards and the lack to honour that. 💜🙏💙
Love you guys and what you do!

Sweet man! Totally awesome…
It's disappointing to not find the helicopter, but at least you cleaned up the lake.
Tooooo funny. Enjoyed it find
I LOVE my Tusa Switch Pro fins. If you're ever back in Nashville, I'd love to join you guys for a search. Even just as support, it would be a cool experience.
