  • Find out what could have been on a fully custom emulation of Primal Rage. This project was "officially stopped" before it could be completed, but that doesn't mean we can't check it out!

      I know this project was stopped (for whatever reason) but is there any possible way to get my hands on this?
      I’ve been dying to get my hands on an arcade perfect version for decades.

    Primal rage protection is prolly the longest emulation battle I known of. I’m glad this encryption didn’t get ported to other games. Whew.

      We (collectively) have been shouting at whoever will listen for decades to please, please, please do something about this. Arcade hardware doesn't last forever. Remaster it, remake it - SOMETHING.
      This is a fight that is still ongoing, if you can believe it. Feel free to add your own voice by pestering Ed Boon / NRS / WB Games.

    I was never able to get into PR, but I find the stories behind it's quirky emulation fascinating. It's really nice to see a skilled player be able to pick apart gameplay and point out things that a casual person would miss. Great video!

    Hi, could you tell me what is the best way to play this game please? I recently got the MAME version but I can't get the button inputs to work (can't get fierce kick to work).
    I bought the midway pc disc to find it won't work on windows 10. So I was looking at either building a machine that runs XP, or getting an emulator for the PlayStation or Xbox midway versions. I also have a raspberry pi if you know of any good versions for that.
    Many thanks

      Every version of Primal Rage has unique technical problems and emulation issues, making each home port unique like snowflakes.
      I have a few recommendations based on what your specific goals are:
      Single Player: MS-DOS. Surprisingly, MS-DOS has a reasonably faithful arcade experience. The ost on MIDI instruments is an "acquired taste" let's say, but if you're good with it, the DOS-BOX Pure core in RetroArch can get you up and running reasonably quickly. Once installed, place the ISO inside the install folder (default: C:\RAGE), then zip up the folder itself and run RAGE.zip from RetroArch.
      PvP: If you're going mono-a-mono with a friend, the Windows version of Midway Arcade Treasures is where it's at. It resolves many of the emulation issues, but the game runs like 5fps too fast, so it creates some interesting combo situations. The arcade experience is also subpar due to a very inaccurate AI. However, if you're just going up against another human being, this version is the go-to.
      "Budget Pick": Sony PSX. If gettings the above two versions of the game prove to be too difficult (or you're using a low power device like the Raspberry Pie), then the PS1 version of the game is a reasonable pick. It's easy to emulate and has a decent arcade experience, though it has its own emulation issues to be aware of. The hitboxes are a bit low, so some combos and juggles especially may not work. Sauron's arcade AI is next to comatose for some reason, even at max difficulty, but everyone else seems fine.
      "Honorable Mention" Sega Saturn. The inputs are a little picky for specials, like you may have to push each specific direction rather than rotate it out. It's also comparatively more difficult to emulate. You would need Kronos or Beetle Saturn in RetroArch to run it. But - it looks and sounds really nice, the hitboxes are closer to being accurate, and the AI also gets a thumbs-up from me. It's just actually getting it running and the how it reads controller inputs make it hard to recommend.
      Now feel free to read on for your specific technical issues:
      //MAME//
      What our good folks at MAME have not disclosed is that the newer dump of Primal Rage comes from the very rare Japanese version. This version features different special inputs, identical to what you would find on the console Midway Arcade Treasures ports (except for PC). What I've been told is that the game separates out the four attack buttons and Start, resulting in five unique buttons. As you have noticed, a fifth button is not present in the menus of MAME.
      Instead what you'll want is primrageo.zip (with an o at the end, which stands for 'old' - which itself is misleading. That just means it's the worldwide 2.3 version). This version has all the traditional negative-edge special inputs.
      //Midway Arcade Treasures on Windows//
      MAT does in fact work on modern Windows systems without a need for patches or modification, but it's still not as straight-forward as it should be. In the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 folder, you can run primal.exe directly, but you get stretched fullscreen and you are unable to change any settings your controls. To change settings, you'll need to run ffe.exe where you get the whole shabang - Midway intro videos, and a menu to access each game of the collection. Here, scroll down to Primal Rage and go to Options. Change controls and game options to your content.
      The game will function this way, but it's still in a stretched fullscreen. To fix that, you'll need the help of a tool like DXWnd or dgvoodoo, etc. to run it in a window or at a specific resolution.
      After alllllll that, you should be good to go.

      @@mysterygamefightclub5835hank u for the saturn mention, thats the first port i tried to learn the game, and i was wondering why the hell it felt so inconsistent to do the moves (even just sitting holdin the buttons and doing motions)
      later on i got an arcade board (several years ago so it wasnt crazy expensive) because i wanted know what the game was actually supposed to be like and it felt so much better
      after time on that version, i really enjoy the ps1 version and the mat2 pc version. tho i bricked a pc because of the stupid copy protection of the PC cd version

      Definitely try the Saturn version if you get a chance. I emulate using Kronos and even though the fmv cutscenes lag out, the actual graphics look the best out of any version I've tried. The dos port was a close second@@rorybackshell9580
