Probably because it’s very easy to abuse or take advantage of someone with a mental illness especially a child, which is unfortunately something that many of these institutions did to their patients
Which is why ive vowed to keep my baby sister in public school despite her already growing list of disobedience and issues. Shes 5 and i love her but she doesnt understand why what shes doing is bad and its frustrating how stubborn she is.

I actually live really close to this place! This is a girls reform school in Clay Chalkville, Alabama. It was abandoned in 2011/2012 due to a huge tornado that hit. The place was built in 1937 and held many different cabins for the dorms. Since the tornado hit, many of the cabins aren’t there anymore and barely even have the foundations. There are about 4 5/6 buildings in tact. The main building, the library, a school building, a chapel, a random empty building, and a wooden cabin. It’s near a lake and you can see all the trash in the surrounding Forrest. You can get to the campus by three or four ways. 1. Entering from the normal entrance. 2. From a neighborhood nearby. 3. A back ground connected to the street. 4. A rough trail through the woods from the lake. It’s really neat, actually!

How long have you lived near the school? Curious to know if you have heard any horror stories of girls that attended the reformatory? Abuse? Neglect? Mistreatment? You often hear about places similar to these.
I think you guys are the best abandoned exploration channel on youtube. A lot of other channels would have put 'Ghost found' or some other paranormal crap in the title just to get views.

That "Please Master" acronym poster is beyond inappropriate, yeah. Like they're training the girls to be completely submissive. I don't know if it was supposed to be "You're supposed to please master" as in the head of the dorms, or if they were supposed to ask the staff "Please master, may I do (insert activity)?" It's creepy to think of teenage girls being forced into either situation under the idea of behavioural training.

i think it's an element of behavioral therapy often used for borderline personality disorder, and also sometimes bipolar disorder, PLEASE includes treating illness, eating right, avoid mood altering drugs, sleep and exercise, MASTER is about mastery of those things, it's part of self-care for some mental illnesses.

I was in that horrible place in 1998 I was housed in a cottage called Junnalossa,I was sent their for running away from home and the things I went through still haunt me to this very day. So glad a tornado 🌪 took this place out. Wish I would’ve knew about the lawsuit because I would’ve definitely 💯 percent won.

Also the chapel was a thing because Alabama has it set up like, prisoners and juvenile delinquents have the right to expression of religious beliefs. The state owns the chapel but it's usually local churches volunteering to run the services.

The part with the acronyms DEAR MAN, GIVE, and FAST made me laugh. Those are all widely taught DBT skills, which is a form of behavioral therapy that is used in treatment of PTSD but was adapted to also be able to treat anxiety, eating disorders, etc. They sound absolutely ridiculous and are even more ridiculous to try and apply in your every day life
It was originally created to treat BPD, years later the creator disclosed that she actually created it to treat herself and that she had BPD too. I agree that I didn't find it useful, there were people in my group that loved it though.

on the back end of these buildings, theres about a 2 mile hike through a bunch of greenery and on what’s left of that road, there are a bunch of abandoned residential houses whose purpose was to house the people who worked at this facility. the houses are difficult to get to but pretty rewarding once you get in
The acronyms are for a program called Dbt. It is used for people who have Borderline personality disorder. It helps with controlling behavior issues due to acting on emotions.

They are usually muti-denominational. It is actually unconstitutional to confine someone and not provide a place or means of worship. Look at Guantanamo Bay. All detainees are given the opportunity to face Mecca and pray at 3:00.

Come to SoCal and check out the Downey haunted mental asylum. I think the official name is the Hollydale Mental Hospital. It's at 56 Descanso St in Downey, CA if you want to google map it. It's probably the most haunted mental hospital in SoCal. In 2006 there were apparently old body parts found there. It was a place for tuberculosis and polio patients as well.

12:01 - Parents can send their kids away if they misbehave. It's called reform school, or boarding school
Boarding school is not thr same as reform school. On fact, most boarding schools were luxurious for teenagers. It gave them a place to grow and blossom, date without their parents anr it was supposed to instill self discipline. Reform school is a special educational system and was sometimes the halfway between a juvenile detention centre and a behavioural school. Likr many isolated institutions they eventually became hotbeds for abuse, but thay was not their original function.
@@notthedoctor8621 I think their confusion (if they are American) comes from how boarding school and refermation school is used interchangeably. Because it is a common trope for the new step parents or whoever to send them away to boarding school either for behavior or just because they don't like them. So yes while they are different Americans don't differeaneate them.

The only thing I think the videos lack is they feel rushed, not taking enough time to more thoroughly exam each section. I realize I may be biased because I am a sociologist with several anthropology classes under my belt. But I would really like the pace to be slowed down and more time spent exploring. This may not be possible if the building has multiple levels, but more time could have been spent here. Often the camera moves so fast it messes with my equilibrium. Thank you.

So you want to see the same room 20 times? When buildings have been vandalized as much as this place has been its hard to find anything super interesting to film, so instead of losing our interest going into every damn room they cut out the boring parts. If you want to take so much time to look at everything, why not go out and do it yourself? Its rare you actually go to an abandoned building and find anything super interesting. Its usually just a bunch of trash. I guarantee if you actually go explore something like this even you wouldn't go through every damn room, its just a waste of time. Its not that they just think its boring, its that it actually IS boring.

I ended up really liking the surrounding area footage, the smaller detatched buildings..and the way the sky was looking outside it looked like a place you'd be in a nightmare.
I remember this tornado in AL. It sent debris all the way up to TN where I live. I have photos and such from it. I tried to find its owners. Never did.
