I started playing this game recently and I'm so thankful for your channel. This game has almost no content ESPECIALLY in the last year and it's nice to be able to watch these videos.
That's awesome to hear
@Drybe yes thank you so much for the Tome content your videos are great and I plan on watching them all day at work today
for real this game is super deep one of the deepest rpgs with so much and its slept on bc its a roguelike.
You post a video listing races by usefulness and everyone loves it. I post a video of the NBA draft with the same topic and suddenly I'm a monster.
A race tier list? Drybe's gonna get canceled for this one

Wonderful video, & I'm looking forward to the inscriptions video!
When is this man going to start with the playthrough commentaries! Always Good Tier content from you.
+1 Would watch! :)
Great breakdown! Can't wait for the Infusion guide. I tend to stick to wild/healing/regen and basically skip over runes most of the time, so it'll be good to get a second opinion.
Having a shielding and or teleporting rune can be very useful for survivability but in general you really only need runes on magic builds most of the time
Don't have the time to watch the whole thing yet, but I can provide some comments regarding some of the niche races.
-
Dwarves:
I can agree that dwarves are at their best at some really specific builds, I believe their general bulkiness is pretty decent on its own and can be useful to quite a few classes. Same for saves: even if you can't boost them super high, having a decent amount of them and not getting showered with debuffs by every rare you see is quite handy on many classes, even if its not the most optimal thing (tho I'm probably just a pretty big dwarf fan or smth)
When it comes to some niche dwarf builds, I think a dwarf cursed can be quite evil: learn repel, slap a shield on this guy and have fun ignoring like 60% of all enemy melee hits.
-
Ogres:
Ogre-wielding can be quite useful even when you don't really have specific skill trees: 2-h weapons can have really powerful stats compared to 1-h, and if you are already a 2-h user, having an extra equipment slot open is also strong, even if it's just a stat stick: getting high offensive stats from mindstar/dagger or strong defense from a shield is not to be overlooked.
Regarding the 6th inscription, I've found 3 classes that can be candidates for that. The first two are Bulwark and Zerker: they both have only one really strong and necessary unlockable tree (Battle Tactics for Bulwark, Bloodthirst for Zerker), with others being not really that impactful, so getting an extra inscription is a decent option. Then there is Reaver: you only have 1 unlockable class tree, 2 of your generics can be unlocked through quests (Corrupted Sandworm Heart for Vile Life and Grand Corruptor for Hexes), so you only real other option is getting Curses, which can be handy (especially Defenselessness for dealing with accuracy issues), but it isn't strictly necessary since there are other ways to get accuracy and you can get points in curses through escorts anyway, so getting another inscription works too.
There is also an edge case of fonts of knowledge giving you a free cat point, but it's not something you can count on.
-
Undead:
I can also agree that not having movement infusions sucks, and I don't play as undead too much myself, but the poison, bleed and fear immunities really should not be understimated. Debuffs from Deadly Poisons are incredibly annoying and wounds can suck as well, so not having to deal with them is a big relief for me. The fact that you are not taking any damage from these debuffs is a big plus as well, since they can also hurt when left unchecked (like that oozemancer poison area that sucks to deal with as melee). When it comes to fear immunity, it prevents Inner Demons (unless you are asleep, of course) and Panicked, which also makes your life quite a bit easier.
Resilient Bones also have the potential to be quite good: with 40% OOP and maxed talent, you can reduce debuff duration by almost 80%, which seems really big, albeit quite expensive. Even then, with only 1 point you can reduce a 20-turn Burning Hex to only 10 turns and easily clear it with Relentless Pursuit, which can really save your ass in the final fight.
-
Yeek:
Dominant Will can be a fun counter against Summoners and Necromancers: all of their minions are normal rank, so you can easily "highjack" them and make them kill their masters. It's pretty funny to see a ritch spitting its master to death or a Lord of Skulls ripping a Necro to shreds. It's also possible to take direct control over dominated enemies, and for some reason, level them up and even pick prodigies, which probably also has its uses.
Thank you for the help!
Thank you for the video!
For ogre power and accuracy penalty it’s not “effective” loss it’s “total” loss. With diminishing returns on both those stats this means that 20% is closer to 3%. For almost every weapon class and if you ignore shalore the ogre is the best race. Arcane blade is obviously excluded and light based sun paladin also suffer a bit, but that has to do with the half damage procs**, not the power and accuracy penalty.
BB you are alive yet not uploading?
Let the man do what he wants@@sikic996
That is good to know, I didn't realize it worked that way, thanks for pointing it out!
@@sikic996 Lol blame Drybe. He’s giving me my Tome fix while I’m at work.
I am getting back into it soon though, once the mowing season dies down.
@@Drybe You really are way off with alot of these races, but I get it's your personal opinion. Another one I noticed was skeleton, skeleton is easily top tier for almost any class. One of the best shields in the game and a very strong heal that comes with a free blood of life, I mean what more could you ask for. There is no combat situation skeletons passives aren't good in.
I unfortunately yet again didn't change the mastery on tometips from 1.3 to 1.0, so all the numbers on the race talents are a bit higher, than they are in the game.
Ogre's 20% penalty applies to the total values, making it way less severe than it seems.
Also it's good to know the Orc race: tometips.github.io/#talents/race/orc They are only playable in the Embers of Rage campaign, but you fight against Orcs a lot in in the latter half of the regular campaign and they have these same talents.
Nice video. I love playing skellies though. While it's true that not having access to movement infusion can be bad, I've gotten used to using Blink runes since I play skellies so much. You can pretty decent range plus can use them to abuse OOP bonuses in combat or just blink away. Exp Penalty is annoying but it isn't that big of a deal on Insane imo.
Can you do a mindslayer class overview next? It looks super cool!
It's one of the few classes I've not played, but I agree that it looks really awesome, so I'll probably get to it soon.
You got Discord? I have tome questions
Sometimes race can change class completely. First time I ever reached level 31 was on ghoul writhing one.
Can you maybe show how to do certain unlocks, which classes are the best, etc? I've been playing this game from time to time for 3 years and never been able to unlock solipsist and mindslayer, for example. For mindslayer, I always get killed and there is no way to get stronger and come back.
Hey!
Drybe has a class tier list video for the classes based on strength.
Solipsist ca be unlocked by randomly getting the Volcano area in later levels.
For mindslayer, you can always use the Rod of Recall immediatelly to leave. You can come at later levels :)
A lot of the unlocks are tied to progressing through the game. A few are in optional end game dungeons, like Solipsist, so it's a hard unlock, but the dungeon itself is pretty normal.
The mindslayer is the trickiest one by far, because the way to do it is extremely unintuitive. You simply press your rod of recall, once you enter the ruined halfling complex and come back after you've leveled up, like this: czcams.com/video/lCfVq7B8vpE/video.html
It is technically possible to do it right away, but extremely difficult. It's difficult to do it, even when coming back on higher level, since all he needs is a lucky crit or two to kill the Yeek. Ideally you stun/disarm Subject Z and quickly burst him, but it's easier said than done.
the best is posessor, pure S class.
then shadowblade and archmage
on insane mode its: S Tier (9-15% win rate)
Oozemancer
Necromancer
Psyshot
Paradox Mage
A Tier (5.8-7.4% win rate)
Skirmisher
Bulwark
Archmage
Temporal Warden
Doomed
Solipsist
B Tier (3.7-4.4% win rate)
Brawler
Wyrmic
Arcane Blade
Anorithil
Stone Warden
Summoner
Archer
Corruptor
C Tier (3.1-3.5% win rate)
Cursed
Shadowblade
Possessor
Mindslayer
Cultist of Entropy
D Tier (2.2-2.9% win rate)
Marauder
Rogue
Berserker
Reaver
Alchemist
F Tier (0.9-1.9% win rate)
Sun Paladin
Doombringer
Writhing One
Demonologist
finally racism I can get on board with.
Have you thought about doing commentated playthroughs?
I did, but it's hard to shake the feeling that I need to rush, instead of taking my time to think through the decisions, when recording.
I might do shorter commentated gameplay, like going through the first t2 dungeon.
How is Dwarf "Ninche" when it gives giga saves good for almost any class?
On higher difficulties since enemies have higher powers, it's more difficult to get your saves high enough for them to matter.
On classes that don't have some in-built support for saves like Solipsist does, it will require you to have saves on a lot of your gear, which means you have to sacrifice some other stats, so I consider saves niche.
I wanted to give this game a try , but cant reduce resolution without losing skill icons, and at high res I cant see shit all is so small ;[
Maybe some of the solutions recommended in these threads can help: www.reddit.com/r/ToME4/search?q=resolution&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all
Tier listing races? That's so racist
Xd sorry for the joke
Tier list of races out of context seems so terrible xd
Thank you for the video!
