The Chauffeur is one of the highest forms of artistic poetry in my opinion. I’m not going to say I understand what it means, because that is kind of the nature of poetry, however..it’s NOT about “cars”. Watch the official video for more possible lyrical interpretation. Then watch the live version from As the Lights Go Down. This is ART. Also, it’s a freaking ear worm, so just prepare yourself for the onslaught. 😂

'The Chauffeur' is one of Duran Duran most creative songs. Very experimental for a pop band on the early 80s. One of my favorite DD songs! Again, most of their early lyrics is like poetry. What you say sounded like breaking glass is ice falling in a glass.

This gentleman obviously did not grow up with Duran Duran being literally globally famous, for a decade, then playing on every radio, and the constant replays of their videos on MTV, and winning Grammy Awards. Then… after fading out, making a massive comeback in another decade and winning more awards.
Yeah, Look up the Biggest bands Globally of the entire decade of the 1980’s. Then had an amazing hit album in the 1990’s.

SEPH, These type of songs mark a pathway for Duran Duran. It does show the vocal ability, as well the sort of "experimentation" with the music. I viewed a more recent broadcast of a live concert, and their music proved to me all the years of hard work is what kept them successful all these years. As for this, I really like it, enough for me to track down this song, and others...I love the vocals, and the overall sound of the release.

@@SephPlays I've always been "hooked" on old time radio shows. Classic radio broadcasts nightly, and they offer sources for transcribed shows from several eras. Comedy and musical most peak my interest, like "The Dean Martin Show", from the 1950s. Or the "Frank Sinatra Show" going all the way back to the 1940's. I like nostalgia in whatever form it takes. As far as just music, I suppose the 1960s and 1970s produced artists I listen to more.

The lyrics do make sense but I think you are trying to take them too literal. Sometimes a song takes multiple listens to truly decipher the lyrics. Music is art. Poetic lyrics are Art. The Chauffeur tells the story of a woman engaged, heading to her wedding, but she had forbidden love with the Chauffeur, who is currently driving his former mistress to her wedding. As they are driving, he looks the bride to be using the rear view mirror, saddened by the betrayal he feels, as she in their throws of passion, told him she would leave her fiancée for him..This the brooding lie, the glass splinters in her mind, are her cruel deceptive thoughts and lies. Watching lovers part is her exiting the car, and t h e smile is a hurtful smirk she throws his way as she heads into the church. My source, an. Article from a Teen Idol magazine from 1983. Simon said this was his original interpretation of the song as he wrote the lyrics. Of course, all Duran Duran songs are always up for personal interpretation. Simon was studying drama at the University of Birmingham, part of his studies was creative writing and literature where he learned to write poetry, which he turns into lyrics nowadays! Simon Le Bon is my favorite member. So much so, I took voice lessons so I could emulate his style. He has such a unique style. My vocal coach likened it to wi my e glasses that have various levels of fluid and you use your finger on the rim to bring various tones.

This is one that started as a poem Simon had written in a notebook prior to joining the band (while on a Kibbutz in Israel, so he has said). A lot of it is just meant to be imagery, particularly of the scenery there. Definitely not one to bother trying to decipher too much.

Simon Le Bon is very poetical in most of his lyrics & is happy not to explain the meaning of them (even if sometimes they seem inscrutable). Different people interpret the same lyrics in a completely different way often & so as long as he knows what he means by them then l would imagine that's enough. However, obvious meaning to lyrics such as 'I Don't Want Your Love' & 'Ordinary World' are interpreted more easily. I hope that helps.Good to hear your reactions though. Did you miss 'The Seventh Stranger' from your dive through 'Seven & The Ragged Tiger?

I think perhaps you're continually trying to make *_literal_* sense out of what is *abstract poetry* - it's metaphorical, not literal. Maybe try listening to the music without simultaneously trying to process the lyrics line-by-line and repeatedly try to interpret their _meaning_ - that way madness lies!
The same way you would with Bowie, who used to write poetry (on paper) then cut up all the lines and reassemble them into song lyrics.
(idk if you might perhaps have ASC? I do, and I know I can tend towards the literal at times, even when it's not always helpful for me to do so. 😬)
