Pet Chihuahua mauled to death by larger dog at Florida park

- A Seminole County family is mourning the loss of a family pet in a gruesome dog attack at a local dog park. Cory Richardson said he and his son took their dog, ‘Oatmeal’, to Paw Park on Saturday to celebrate a recent accomplishment. While there, Richardson said he heard the dog yelping and when he went over to check on the seven-pound chihuahua, he was in the mouth of a larger dog.

Dog parks are not safe. Why? Because no matter how many controls you place in the park you can never control for the ignorant and lazy owners of other dogs.

When I take mine, I have my kids to watch the dogs. I see a lot of irresponsible dogs owners that not only they don’t pay attention to their dogs, but the don’t obey the rules and bring big dogs to the small size area. Also I don’t understand why these fences are so short. Looking at this report I won’t bring my dog to the park anymore.

I don’t do dog parks unless I’m traveling, but my chihuahua has only ever been attacked in the ball dig side.
But I have two 100+lb pups do everyone in the small mean dog side isn’t even an option.
I’ll never understand the concept of “dog parks”. It’s a receipt for disaster on all levels, but specifically for smaller dogs.
This same thing almost happen to my dog. We saved it in time when we saw first signs of aggression toward our smaller dog. The owner didn’t care. We no longer go to any dog parks. I hope that something is done and they get justice for Oatmeal. R.I.P. Oatmeal 🕊️ ❤
An unleashed dog in a cage fenced in with others is like a drunk baby at a gun range.

Don’t take your dog to a dog park…very dangerous place for them. Besides the danger from other dogs attacking your dog, there is endless bacteria on the ground from feces and urine…ask any vet how many injuries they see on a weekly basis from dog parks…..
Irresponsible owners who didn’t even respond the moment Thor dog attacked. These are the people the rest of us should be worried about. There’s a lot like them unfortunately
I own a Akita and I never take my Akita to the dog park because they aren't dog park dog's. I am so sorry for this dog and his family.
I respect that! I’m a firm believer in not putting a dog in a situation to fail! And it starts with knowing the breed first and how to raise it as a consistent leader.

I’m so sorry 🙏🏽 this is heartbreaking! I had an American Pitbull Terrier for 15 years and 2 months, when he was 8 a German Shepherd got loose and grabbed him by his neck, it’s one of the scariest things ever! Thinking it’s gonna kill my dog infront of me! I took drastic measures and got their dog off. The owner was not a bad person! He payed for my dogs ear surgeries(he had two) but I remember how scary it was too see that. The vet told me I was lucky my dog wasn’t any smaller if he could have been killed. So my new pup I got a way bigger dog, to be able to protect himself till I can stop the situation. That being said I never been a fan of dog parks and almost any behavioral trainer will tell you it’s a bad place to put your dog in a situation to fail. Don’t do dog parks, not every owner has full control of their dogs, and tbh some owners don’t care what their dogs do.

I worked at dog day care and the dogs are at least screened.
Even then it is risky.

The trouble with dog parks is the dogs aren't screened ahead of time.

I really feel for those people. We love our dog park. The dogs look like they are playing rugby. We forget that they are animals and a small dog could be killed by a larger dog. Even hawks have been known to swoop down out of nowhere and grab small dogs. Very sad

You hear about this happening all the time. I NEVER take my dogs to a dog park for that reason and the fact that you don't know what diseases other dogs may have.
Why I avoid dog parks.
It doesn’t matter the size of the dog, it matters that dog parks are supposed to be non aggressive non prey drive dogs and people are stupid.
My daughter avoids dog parks and walks her dog at the mountains where there is not other dogs around. She doesn't trust dog owners bcuz they don't watch their dog. I feel bad for the dog owner and their lost of their pet. Rip 🐕🦺
Seen 2 dogs attack each other over a 1 yr old kid, and then felt bad for the traumatized father and his son. How’s about stop condoning ignorantcy.

Our dog parks have a side for large dogs and a side for small dogs. Does Florida not do this?
If it’s mixed I don’t think I’d trust my small dog around large dogs. To many irresponsible people owners.
Dog parks are a bad idea. You have no idea how the other dogs will act, you are only hoping for the best and taking the word of their owners.... and everyone believes their dog is an angel until the dog isn't. So sad.

My dog got attacked at the dog park. Ignorant owner stood there and did nothing. He made it out unscaved.

I’m sorry but dog parks are just terrible there’s always going to be attacks and owners are too distracted or chatting to pay attention then leave very quickly when things go wrong because most of these dogs are not up to date with their shots if they have any at all
