- Not a perfect solution, but can cost less than $1.00 and a few minutes of your time, VS hundreds of dollars at a shop. It’s not intended to be a long time fix, but where as it’s function is purely comfort based and plays no real role in safety, I feel comfortable sharing this tip to those who would rather not drop several hundred dollars on a whole motor assembly.
My motor is also very weak and worn. So this is a short term fix. A brand new unit is roughly $700, or will need to be sourced from a local wrecking yard. However junkyard parts have generally been exposed to the elements far more than a well maintained car, especially when it’s 22 years old.
Thank you for watching my videos and please leave and comments and constructive criticism below. As always, I love you all.
You a real 1
great how to. very clear.
very helpful video, jus fixed this issue on my 96 ls400 but with a rubber type washer
It’s a “short term” fix. But it’s way cheaper than spending $650 on a new assembly
Legend bro.😮
Legend 👍🏻
Thanks again for showing us some techniques. How about doing a spark plug change?
i have a 97’ ls400 and mine doesn’t even make the grinding noise do you think the motor is just dead?
This may seem strange, but try to tilt the steering wheel on a cold morning/night and see if it doesn’t move, or at least try for a second. These tilt motors are prone to failure and I theorize it has something to do the Internal Protection (probably a Bi-Metal switch) and only work when cold, even using it generates enough heat to shut it off. If you can get it to move just once, it’s the motor. If you can’t, you’ll have to do a diagnosis and check both power and signal/command. These motors are quite expensive too.
Would this be the same gear for 11 Lexus LS 460? telescopic doesn't work but the tilt still ok.
I’m not sure, but there is a good chance that it is, or at least very similar. These tilt motors also tend to fail especially with high ambient temperatures, but they are very expensive. I would investigate and see if your model uses this same/similar tilt motor and check the gear first.
Oh thank you. Am curious where is the telescopic gear. Motor is still good bcoz I can hear it trying to auto adjust. I think the gear is worn.
just replace all 4 brake pads. Little did I know that I need to replace the wear sensors. Most on CZcams did hack em to rid the warning ⚠️ light.
Also lost the heater didn't even know it.
Went inside and there are wiring harnesses all around neath the steering and different looks than 400LS.
What size washer did you use?
Idk it was one from my random bolt bin. The hole needs to be almost the size of the gear for it to work. Changing the gear out would be a better fix if you can find them, but I had no luck finding the gear only, and the whole unit is like $600
What year is this car
1998
You have it apart, fix it now. You’ll have to do everything twice.
I agree that putting a new gear in would be the best thing, but I was unable to find just the gear by itself. The whole assembly is like $600
