  • Been a while since I've posted. Lots going on. Picked up a new car, had a small problem. In this video I'll show how to replace the motor in a 2nd Gen Facelift LS400 for tilt steering as well as how you can adjust manually if you don't want to replace the motor.

I have the same model year Lexus, and this job took me about an hour as a relative novice. Your video was very useful and the steps very clear. The only issue I ended up having was a bit of slop in the steering after initial install due to missing what seem like nylon bushings that fit into the holes that the 6MM threaded bolts go into on the tilt motor. Once those were installed, the wheel is as firm as it was previously (which is to say, very firmly in place).
I had purchased a new tilt motor from ebay, and swapped both c-clips from the original motor, as well as the seemingly nylon bushings.
Great video. Thank you for showing all of the angles of this job and the issues you ran into personally. If ever do a video on the fixing the electronic door locks, I'll definitely be watching!

Same steps as on my LX470. I’ve pulled it out, now waiting for the replacement part to arrive. Thanks heaps.

Good video, I've been waiting for mine to stop working but it's been good for the last 8 years. Obviously now I've said that....

I have a 1998 went to go take it apart and it had the other type of motor with the blue gear that u can put a washer behind, is it normal to see something like this happen?

LS400's don't have a ton of problems, but the tilt seems to be an issue regardless of generation. Luckily yours is a $.10 fix, mine was over $100.

Great video! Can you make a video on how to fix the telescopic motor?

You can actually see a bit of it @4:10 in the video above. It is the long screw shaft on the left side of the frame. Process is relatively similar, the control signals come out of the same harness as the ones for tilt. I'm not going to rip it out unless it breaks, but at least you can see where it is. If it breaks, I'll do a video on it 🙂

Great video. Unfortunately, I have a 95 LS400. Those motors are even harder to find. Had to get one from the junkyard because I refuse to pay $700 for a new one. It now only works on cold days, or about 30 mins after the car has been running with the AC on. Before those 30 mins, it may move a quarter of a centimeter and then just stops. Drives me nuts for the tilt to work as I pull into my driveway from work.

I have a 96, and the motor was getting tired. I removed the motor, ( telescoping out fully gives room for easy access, just remove the negative battery terminal when fully out).I'm in Panama, and the motor was re-brushed for $15. Any shop working on small dc motors can fix these easily. The motors are almost identical to many power window motors.

Good video. Mine only works good in the winter and in the summer only half. Don't no why but that's ok.
