    Hard drive mysteriously full? Here is a weird problem that just showed on on my windows 10 machine "hard drive says it's full when it's not" so I started to delete content from the hard drive, because it was in the red and it was still quite full. So I did some more troubleshooting and found the problem. I will show you what is taking up space on my hard drive on Windows 10. What was it? watch the whole video to find out.

    This problem had me puzzled for a long time. This video put me on the right track, thanks to your approach. My problem was a folder 'c:\system recovery" (From a DELL product). Eventually I got rid of it. It had naught (zero) space when viewed in explorer but the folder was being incremented on a regular basis by some backup system. Eventually it accounted for about 85% of the space on the SSD.

The system will create the folder again as long as you do not deactivate the W7 backup utility in programs and settings. I, too, had mysterious SSD drive full but my files didn't add up. I'd done all the clean disc, compress, remove hibernation, delete old files, etc. and still only had 1G left. After viewing this, I started to look for files that were empty that might not have any reason. Looking for folders/files by size didn't work because, like you demonstrated it has 0 bytes. In the Settings > Storage, my "Other" files used much of my space. Clicking in there, I saw that an "Apple" subfolder under my User folder was very large, but when I clicked on the actual folder, it had 0 bytes. I deleted this, and BINGO! Just like you showed, it mysteriously had 35G hidden that freed up on my C:\drive. I've been scouring the web for a week now trying to figure this out.

    Same issue on my backup drive. Win 10 suddenly started using GB of space in a 0 byte file which had the same name as my laptop. As I do already mirror backup I reconfigured the Win 10 backup just to do the User directory (instead of the whole disc) and changed it to once a month as I don't normally store stuff in User. Now it works OK and plenty of space on my backup drive.

    @MaskedGEEK Před 5 lety +37

    I highly suspect Windows backup as the culprit. You may set up a backup schedule in the past then forgetting about it. Taking up over 1TB is indicitive of a progressive backup with the occasional full system image. It's naming convection of "DESKTOP-9EP4AH8" is typical of Windows naming the backup as the name of your PC during installation of Windows.
    I could be wrong but from my experience that what I believe it is. And I also mention it could be a backup schedule you previously set and forgot because setting up a back using the Windows built-in backup tool requires a few steps to go through in order to fully set it up. Even if you just accepted all default options, Windows Backup will always try to select a drive with the most space and with the best redundancy. If all you have for backup drives are more hard drives, then it'll just select the drive with most space.

      @MaskedGEEK Před 5 lety +4

      @@Britec09 I've just looked at my own backup file on my NAS. That's definitely a Windows Backup file structure you've got there. At 3:40 when you opened the image and saw the folders "Backup Set {Date} XXXXXX", with the obvious exception of the date stamp, my backup structure is the same as yours. Also in the same root folder with the image exists, you'll also see a 1KB file named "MediaID.bin" which is the reference file Windows uses to look at backups, that way Windows doesn't hammer your storage solution scanning all files unless you open them.
      It's a very weird glitch when the Properties windows shows 0 bytes used, as mine sits at 18.9GB so I can't explain that. But if I were you, check your backup settings from within the classic Control Panel (using the Settings app will eventually open the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) CPL anyway) and disable it since you use Acronis.

      @@Britec09 You, or I, may not have used Windows Backup, but Windows surely did. This would be fine for inexperienced people, but for people like me that manually back up data, I don't need this auto-bloat. I've been struggling with this for months. I have a game drive that I deleted 80% of the games because of the "mystery back up" filling up external Hard Drives. I'm elated and furious at the same time. Just recovered 400 gigs of space. The progress I made in those games is gone. One of the reasons I love Linux, nothing requires terabytes of space to operate, even 1:1 backups of the entire operating systems.

      @NortheastRacing Před 5 lety

      @@Britec09 That's a good question. I've had odd behavior from it before. I used to use it back when I had Windows 7. I then started using a 3rd party program to make backups. I deleted all backups made with the Windows backup program (which is the same Windows 10 still uses), and even though it showed as completely gone (there were no files remaining om the partition), the drive was nearly full, as it was before removing them. I ended up having to format the partition to regain the disk space. I'll never use Windows utility to backup ever again.

    Let's say you are emptying your phone to computer. When you copy and paste everything, you also are taking out of your phones permissions that you give for these apps to run correctly. And that's for every single app, every single permission that is inside of your permissions. That includes all of your Gmail one by one. And you may have thousands of Gmail's but anything and everything inside of a computer is a piece of data as is your phone. You cannot see it because it only complies with your phone not your computer so you need to put it back in your phone for it to register and show you what it is and if you want to keep it. If you do want it, make a folder for it before you put it in your computer and label it. Each one. For example every time I empty out one of my phones into the computer I will make a folder called phone data and then I'll just grab everything that I can't see and put it in that folder and look it up another day but make sure you put on that file which phone you are referring to because it may not have the same apps as a different phone that you have stored in your computer. I edit this comment on this post I don't know how many times and it's past 4 in the morning but I hope I phrased it in the way so everyone could understand. I'm not a computer geek, I compare myself to an old dog that refuses to learn new tricks because I'm too damn stubborn so I suck at computers but I do love solving problems. And so when this came across to me and I deleted it one time and I couldn't find information the next time, I'm back track my steps. I told myself anything I don't understand I'm going to put in a file and after I lost it I realized I need to label it precisely on a way I could understand it and find it easily. And so I put it all the information back in my phone and it had me install apps that I uninstalled at a later time and then I remembered exactly what it was one by one. So I hope this helps everyone and thank you for reading my five season novel I just wrote and not just to help you but to open your mind on another way of understanding things sing you'll come up with your own ideas on how to do things how it taught me a lot of things I could do in my personal life and think different. Crazy right 😂

  • @alwaysflat7996

    The problem with windows 10 is that you have no control over what is downloaded in stealth and keeps filling up your hard drive, where do you guys think all of those downloads go?
    That's one of the reasons I do not use windows 10, it's by far the shittiest (excuse my language) operating system ever to be produced by MS even worse than windows 8 and 8.1
    I am still using windows 7 for as long as it takes me, if I can no longer use it, then I will have to use other OS but not Microsoft.
