Antique Rusted Hammer - Restoration | Workshop DC
Hey guys! How are you doing?
In this video i restore a Antique rusted Hammer that i earn from my dad.
This hammer has more than 40 years, he belonged to my grandpa, which passed away a long time ago.
To restore, i begin disassemble cutting the tape, you can notice that was a crack in the handle which make be dangerous to work with this tool.
I use a Hand Saw that i restored in a previous video to cut the wood handle.
Now with a help of my little vise and hammer i take off the wood part that lefted inside the hammer.
And the disassemble is done. Time to remove all the rust of the hammer, for that i use water with a half cup of hydrochloric acid.
After 1 day in the bath, all the rust is gone, i neutralized the acid with water and baking soda, to stop the rust to come again, i use penetrating oil.
To remove the bend i use a bench grinder cause the steel is kinda hard to remove.
When i end this work, i start with a file to remove the superficial marks and remove the sharpe edges.
I also sand a little to make the surface more smooth, and bluing all.
I make some details with a steel wool, and applied some penetrating oil to stop the action of the bluing.
I also restored the original pin, i just debend them and wire brushed.
I needed to bought a new handle cause the old one was useless.
A little cut in the new handle here a sanding job there, and a new hole for the pin.
And sure a olive oil to protect the wood.
Now i begin assemble, just put the handle with the hammer and the pin to hold.
And done, a New Hammer ready to be used.

Overall nice restoration on the hammer. Only problem I see is the wedge is kind of a problem since it an old square head nail. I would not try hitting anything too heavy duty or the head might fly off.

Incredible job, man! I completely agree with what Mister Patina said - I can tell you put a lot of additional time into improving your shots and editing the video. I can safely say that it was worth it! ❤
On a different note, I would not recommend a hammer this size for de-shelling pistachios.

Thanks Bro! I just take the advice from a really nice guy. Probably you know him very well hehe'.
Ps - I use this hammer to de-shelling Nuts sometimes. 😆😆❤️

Really nice refurbishing project. It looks clean and good but not to the point of being a mere display hammer. Thumbs Up!

Belo trabalho.

It looks like a wood I know as purple heart. If it is from the Amazon region I would recommend really good breathing protection
