Had a kk crixus dark star. Was super smooth. Smooth as any Lews I’ve owned. Worm gear wouldn’t slide back and forth so it just stacked my line up. Finally got fed up and gave it to a young kid.
I had the same issue. I have cracked the reel open and replaced the torsion springs that engage the spool when you turn the handle. The issue seems to be a combination of those springs and the arm that is knocked back upon turning the reel handle. It’s an unfortunate problem that I’ve only experienced on this particular kastking reel. I have 4 other kastking reels for 3-4 years, and I have put serious mileage on them. They each have their own little quirks, but none of the problems are deal breakers for the price. After all of my time with them, I would recommend them to anyone who’s looking to get a few more setups in their boat at an affordable price. My solution for this reel is to re engage the spool by pushing up on the thumbpress. It sucks...but it’s a relatively minor issue for me. But it all depends on what you’re fishing. Having a fish blow up on a frog as it hits the water can really spell trouble in that split second this reel requires to reengage it. Ultimately, I understand your issue, but the reel is still the fastest out there, and it’s awesome for certain applications.
I got it replaced once more and gave it away to subscribers. I decent it wasn't worth the headache. I got it for topwater only and then when I need it to work when you find them blowing up, it would stop the fun.
Man that's a bummer. I haven't tried the KastKing line at all, but for a cheap quality baitcaster, I would recommend the Pflueger President XT. I picked up one on sale from Amazon and it has been absolutely bullet proof for about 3 years and I've caught some decent fish on it during that time.
Dang that sucks. I have one KastKing Royale Legend 2, had it for a year this month and it has worked flawlessly every weekend. Here’s the but,,, but lol it’s starting to make a little small noise when casting something like a broken DC reel 😂!!! The Quantum Smoke Energy S3 that I unboxed or the shimano slx are my favorite in my arsenal as of now.. Both right at $99-$109 I freaking love em. I’ll do thorough review of the Quantum at 5 months of using do like December it’ll drop
I have 4 kastking Sharkey 3 6000 series reels for a while never had any issues and caught some big catfish on all of them was considering one of these speed demons for my next baitcaster but not now.
I would see what gen they are on. I mean this was a few years ago. If it wasn't for that, I would have loved it. The retrieve for topwater was so easy. You just go slow and it worked as if you were burning it.
I recently bought a KastKing Crixus ArmorX BC reel for no other reason than it was on sale. Took it out one day and hated it. For the life of me I could not get that thing tuned in. Returned it the next day. One possibility is that I don’t know what I’m doing. Another possibility is it was a piece of junk.
@@TravisDoesKayakFishing - That reel was $100. I returned it and bought a Lews Laser Speed Spool Rod and Reel Combo for $115. When you consider how clumsy I am and the abuse I put on my gear, that’s a no-brained. If I tear up the reel or break the rod-I just buy a new one. The cost of doing business.
Agreed. I fished a 25 dollar Shakespeare Excursion out of necessity. I gave it to a friend after a while, but had zero complaints about it. Kast King is just not good, IMO.
Hey man how are you today. Man I'm sorry to hear that is not working out for you. I totally agree with you on this for the money that you paid it should be a lot better than this. And the second one with the same issue too. I do not blame you for being disappointed man. They definitely need to fix this problem.
@@mackjenkins7721 Oh Pelican is solid. It's KastKing that is giving me the business. Pelican replaced my entire pedal drive after only asking for the SN off the kayak. I cannot brag on them enough.
Correct. It continues to lock into place and the reel should unlock it when turned, but it doesn't. This is a well known issue with this reel. I have read others have had luck with other KastKing models, but this one is rough.
Your right KK is not dependable . KK still seems to have a high failure rate despite their alleged quality control standards. KK also seems to keep rebranding away from their AVERGAE JOE motto with more pros and more cost using Gadgets and gizmos as the selling point.. Basically flashy houses built on bad foundations
I am have heard something similar from a lot of people. Seems that this is the model people shouldn't start with. The other models people have mentioned seem to last a year or long for most.
Good, honest review, buddy... they just don't make crap like they used to... lol let's hope they stand by the warranty and make it right... maybe it's a double oversight... lol God bless!!!
I hope they come through too. Right now they are wanting to know the PO, when it was originally replaced, where it was shipped to, and a video of the issue. Fun stuff I tell you.
I don't like buying anything from them. I just picked up some scales that they have on Amazon, The ad says, waterproof, floats, and doesn't require calibration. I am going to find out. If they get me on another product, I won't even look in their direction if it's free stuff.
Absolute truth! I won't buy anything they make because of it. I won't get a rod, a hat, a glove, a sticker, and would just give-a-way anything of their stuff I ever stumble onto. Kast King, GanFindX, and Ardent entry-level rods are hard passes that I will not suggest to anyone no matter the discount.

I have heard the same. Their BFS reels are tempting. I hear only great things about them.
I have the first one they released. It’s pretty solid. Allows me to throw shad raps with a baitcaster.
Same problem here and I’ve had 4 total through replacements.

You might be onto something with the Pflueger. 7:3.1 and reliable for under 100 is a good deal IMO.
@@TravisDoesKayakFishing I think I bought mine for around $60

I actually like everything about this reel with the exception of the thumb bar issue which sucks. At least yours made it a year 😂
Thanks for the insight. I've been wanting to pick up a Kastking...not now. I'll stick to my cheap Abu Garcia black max.
Yeah, my Abu Garcia Silvermax and Jordan Lee reels never have this type of issue. I thought it was worth the risk for just 100 but it is not.
