My mother lived to be two months shy of 101. People were always telling her how blessed she was to live such a long life. She would always smile a big smile at those comments and play it off. But when it was just me and her, she told me so many times that long life was more of a curse than a blessing, because she had to say goodbye to so many loved ones. She was the last living from a family of nine. ♥
Oh wow that’s heartbreaking😢thank you for sharing her experience & I’m sorry for your loss🙏🏼
My great-grandmother died when she was 94, she lost all 3 of her children and her husband quite early, they were only in their 40s-50s. In her last years when we visited her she always ended up crying because of how much she missed them. I wish i was older and knew how to console her
granddad was 98 when he died and lived a full life, battling prostate cancer for at least 2 decades... he was 96 when grandma died, and that just took the fight out of him. still took the cancer 2 more year to beat him. he used to say that getting old was great, but being old was not.
Excellent reaction. It's so refreshing to have reactor not ask a thousand questions and talk constantly during the movie. You make it feel like we are all watching the movie together. It's much appreciated and a joy to watch instead of getting aggravated by reactors who think THEY are the show.
Wow I really appreciate that thank you!! I try my best so I’m glad it comes across that way🙏🏼
Yes John !! My thoughts exactly and I wrote a similar comment to yours commending her on her style. Another problem with reactors who talk a lot is they talk over key dialog, important dialog to the plot line and dialog that is iconic. I once watched these reactors who were watching Breaking Bad and they talked over Walts entire "I am the danger" speech, all three of em totally missed that iconic scene because they were talking and making jokes and trying to be funny instead of watching and reacting. This Journey Marie girl is on the right track.
Facts! Man oh man, I wish every reactor could read this comment. It's been my biggest beef with movie reactions, and then they claim 'copyright' all the time. There are only a few good ones, really good, and like Marie they are in-tune with the movie and know what to say and when. It's definitely a natural talent.
John, I believe, was an angel dropped down to earth. He didn't know anything. No family, no friends, and no past...It's like brutal asked, "How do ya know?"..He replied "Don't know. Don't know much of anything."..Great movie! Great reaction!
Like when Paul is reading Johns case, and we see him with the girls, Paul exclaimed Jesus! so there's that 😂😂😍😍❤❤
Not sure how true this is ...but I've heard that it wasn't a coincidence that his initials were JC....
@@kenzisdad02 Yes, one of the producers confirmed that.
I believe this too. Hammersmith (Coffey's defence attorney) even days "like he dropped out of the sky".
It isn't that John is an angel, he has been walking the world for thousands of years healing people. Possibly since there were people. His powers made the mouse live 10s if not 100s of times longer than it should have and will do the same to Paul. Everyone John has ever cared for or loved has died of old age while he has kept living. That's why he is tired of being alone. The amount of power he pushed into Paul could have him live for 2000 years based on what happened with the mouse. That power kept John young and free from sickness.
"It's Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair"
John's referring to the constellation of Cassiopeia.
I was about to say that!🤙🤟
Yes, Journey, John Coffey is indeed a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus.
The electric chair was relatively humane when used properly. The wet sponge conducting current directly to the brain caused instant brain death. All that you see afterwards is galvanic reflexes. The doctor was still picking up a faint heartbeat from Arlen Bitterbuck so they hit the power again so they wouldn't have to wait for it to stop by itself. Personally, I am anti- death penalty but don't want folks to misunderstand the method ❤
It's been argued, persuasively, that firing squad is better, being faster and thus less painful. I hate the very idea of capital punishment, but the one thing I absolutely cannot understand is why the condemned isn't always sedated and unconscious.
I don’t know how you were able to not shed a tear throughout the movie. This movie gets me every time. I get a little dirt in my eyes and they start to water up.
I was definitely emotional👌🏻
I like your reactions. First of all, I love that you don't use an intro and you don't spend 4 minutes telling us to subscribe. I think you have a very good blend of talking and reacting. I'm the type who enjoys reactors who don't talk much and when they do talk, they have something short and quick to say. I'd much rather watch reactors react psychically like laughing, being surprised or getting angry but most of all empathy. And speaking of empathy, you are one of the rare reactors who didn't shed any tears in this reaction, I was surprised by that. Ok, have a good day. ps, reaction request for the movie "Big Fish" by Tim Burton.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed my reaction! & yea I definitely got emotional but didn’t actually cry for this one. & okay I’ll be adding that to the list👌🏻🙏🏼
When the wardens wife ask about all his scars.. he said he didn't remember. Being that Paul lived past 108.. Wonder how old John was.. when he couldn't remember much from his own past.
Another great Hanks movie that, for some reason, goes under the wire, is "Road To Perdition." Total 180 from his usual nice guy roles..He plays a Hitman in the 1930's..Also stars my favorite actor of all time, Paul Newman.
Thanks for the info!
1- John Coffey can't bring something back to life. When he asked they give him Mr Jingles he said "might still be time" meaning Mr Jingles wasn't completely dead yet when he got stomped, but if he had died, it's over. _"I tried to take it back but _*_it was too late_*_ "_
2- I don't think he took Del's pain. I think he can feel and affect things depending on how close he is to it. Del's pain was so immense, that he was this affected by it even from such a long distance, so he probably felt like 5% of Del's pain
Also Saint Christopher was a saint for travelers for us as catholics so kinda fit well John . ❤ rip Duncan. Greetings from France 🇫🇷
Congratulations Journey Marie. You are one of very few reactors that didn't cry through this movie. Which was so hard to do. I saw this movie three times and lost it everytime. Great reaction. Great job!💯
Thank you so much!! I made it through but it was very touching❤️🙏🏼
@Journey Marie Reacts You're welcome. And yes, it was a very touching, heart string tugging movie. I don't know if you've seen "The Color Purple " but it's another touching, emotional movie. Check that one out.
The couple dancing in the movie was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers. They danced in movies together for proly 20 years. And proly the two best and smoothest dancing couple, ever!
When John looked into the sky and said, Cassie the lady in the rocking chair. He was talking about the constellation Cassiopeia. Great reaction. Gratitude.
And Hanks wife in this movie is Bonnie Hunt. Probably the most perfect in every role actress, ever! She was absolutely amazing in , Jerry McGuire! Which u should definitely watch!!
"next thing you know he's gonna be throwing his poop" 🤣 ahh that killed me lmao
🤣🤣🤣
The first time I saw this on TV, I missed the part where he bought the Moon Pie, so I thought that's what he did.🤣
Thank you for your reaction. Knowing Michael is gone makes it more emotional.
I've watched and commented on so many of your other videos. Didn't realize you did one of the greatest movies ever! As usual, your brains, beauty and humor made it a wonderful watch. You really are amazing and good at this. Keep it up!❤
That’s such a nice compliment thank you!! Means a lot🙏🏼🥹
A lot of people think Stephen King is all about horror, but the majority of his work is about people, horror is secondary. Needful Things is a great representation of this!
I'm in LOOOVE !! automatically your # 1 fan from Monterrey Mexico. Liked and subscription of course.
One of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Incredibly written and superb acting that makes you go through just about every emotion possible. Percy has got to be one of the most hated characters, too.
"Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair." Cassiopeiae, constellation in the northern sky. Easy to recognize as the five brightest stars form the letter "W".
"All I wanted was me a little cornbread" 😠 LMAO
I love when reactors get to the scene of John healing Paul... The dramatic film turns on a dime with that supernatural aspect.... Reactors remembering...."OH YEAH, This is a Stephen King film"
🏆 ❤ 🎥
MCD should've won the Oscar for this movie.
Journey 🥰 does it again loved your reaction. Best moment is here 36:02 😂 Tom Hanks in (2000) Castaway is fantastic. That would be great for another film reaction. 👍🏽
Lol I’m glad you enjoyed & I just added that to the list, thank you!
@@journeymariereacts great thx 🙏🏽
3:59 "😄 They lookin' at _him_ like, like he a _giant."_
In the book, he's 6'8".
The character Dean, was also with Tom in Saving Private Ryan, and with Mel Gibson in, Once We Were Soldiers! 2 other excellent movies u should watch!!
Barry fuckin' Pepper!
Snow Walker
@@fionnmaccumhaill3257 great movie!
6:12 "He's trying to give you a handshake. Respect."
You're right.
But they must be cautious.
The men that come through here are deadly murderers, sentenced to death, and they have nothing left to live for.
Some of them don't mind the idea of hurting the guards. Might even like it.
It only takes one mistake to end up injured or dead.
And John Coffey is so huge, if that's what HE wants to do, he could crush Paul's hand in one second and break his neck the next.
I don't blame him for hesitating; he could die before the other three guys could do anything about it.
But he knows bad men, and can plainly see that John Coffey is not that kind of man, so he risks his life on that observation.
It IS a risk, but a carefully calculated one.
That's why he hesitated.
A lot of people catch the John Coffey analogy to Jesus, but few mention Paul's parallels to the Apostle Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus.
Both killed people under the authority of the State. Both suffered and were healed. Both were "converted" after encountering a higher power. (Saul became Paul the Apostle, and Edgecomb left his job on death row to help reform juveniles). Edgecomb's sharing Coffey's story is analogous to the Apostle Paul's spreading the teachings of Jesus.
Excellent reaction. One of my favorite movies and your reaction made it even better. Thanks very much.
Glad you enjoyed it😁🙏🏼
John is Michael Clark Duncan, won an Oscar for this! And he was in a hilarious movie with Will Farrell, as a totally stupid race car driver!
He didn't win, he was only nominated. Which is a crime.
MCD typically was typecast in "intimidating big guy" roles. So glad he was able to give us this performance!
When John said there's Cassi the lady in the rocking chair. He was talking about the stars. The constellation Cassiopeia known as the lady in the rocking chair.
“I hope it’s quick” oh ma’am 😬
Something a lot of people overlook... The average lifespan of a mouse (like Mr. Jingles) is 5-7 years. Mr. Jingles was first noticed when Paul was around 44 (no telling how old Mr. Jingles was at the time). Paul said that he was 44 when John was executed and was currently 108 (64 years had passed). That means that Mr. Jingles has lived about 9 times his normal lifespan. The average lifespan of a male is around 77 years. Imagine.... if Paul lives for the same 9 times a normal lifespan, he will quite possibly live to be around 693 years old. His Green Mile is very, very long.
Oh wowwww thanks for putting that into perspective
It's absolutely worth reading the book. Not that much is added but it does elaborate on John and the other prisoners. You get Dels story (horrible) and it's a very well written book
The audiobook read by Frank Muller is also outstanding.
Same writer director producer and even actors also in Shawshank Redemption! And of course, Tom did Apollo 13 and Forrest Gump with Gary Sinese aka Lt. Dan!
I think Delacroix is mentally much younger than he actually is, which is why he doesn’t question the Mouseville yarn. Because I feel like anyone else would call BS.
That’s how they play it in the film. In the book you just get the feeling he’s poorly educated and really WANTS to believe in Mouseville. There’s a line when Percy tells him it isn’t real that I’ll paraphrase: “The look on his face told me that part of him HAD known, but had wanted to keep the knowledge from the rest of him.”
This movie is so good and emotional love the video Marie stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
30:50 "He's like Jesus like..."
JC 😇
So happy you are doing movie reactions too! 😊❤️
Hope you enjoyed it!
Can u do TV shows, too?
17:53 "Ooh. He needs to go to the _doctor_ for _his_ thing."
You're accustomed to early-21st-century medicine. See, the _proper_ treatment for UTI is _antibiotics._ Nowadays, they're widely _available._ You can get 'em in every hospital, pharmacy and _clinic._ This part of the movie, though, was based in the 1930s. At that time, _no_ one knew about them. The available treatments were _brutal_ by comparison. Hence, Paul's hesitation.
I really enjoyed your reaction to this :) people think its just aboit watching movies, but its a fine line-some reactors talk too much bc they seem to think they need to say something every minute, & some dont pay attention, something will happen and theyll spend 3 minutes saying "damn why did he do that that was weird i cant believe it maybe its because of this" & all the while theyre talking over the movie, a character in the movie is explaining why they did it 😬😵💫
You have a good balance-you comment & let us know what youre thinking but you also sit & watch & listen to a scene and really take it in-so you understand the film.
Subbed :)
Thank you so much, that’s a huge compliment🙏🏼& thanks for the sub, I’m glad you enjoyed my reaction❤️
I’m glad you watched. That’s one of my favorites
If you haven’t seen Sister Act I or Sister Act II they are both excellent comedies with Whoopi Goldberg. Also, Castaway and Captain Phillips both with Tom Hanks are two more fantastic movies. Would love to see reactions to any of these‼️ Good luck with your channel! ❤️fromOregon🇺🇸
He's taking about the ✨ it looks like a rocking chair, it's a beautiful sight 😀
Hi, JM! I'm all caught up now. I think you are off to a great start with your movie reactions. Thanks for sharing these with us! 🙂
Thanks a lot for the upload. Great reaction to a great film. I always apriciate your channel, thanks again.
Thank you too!
8:22 "He just likes to be an a-hole."
Percy Wetmore fits the definition of a sadist. All the _other_ guards on death row are there to do a _job._ Percy is there because he gets off on seeing people _suffer._
11:26 "Look at him. Such a coward. You can just _see_ it in his _face."_
Oh, yeah. There's being a _sadist_ and there's being a _chicken_ shit. Percy is both.
Thinks he's taking a dump. Was not expecting that 😂
LOL I thought I was the only one that would ever catch the hint of that Forrest Gump accent in the scene where Wild Bill attacks them haha.
Lol yea I noticed right away🤣
Please do "Forrest Gump" one if Tom Hanks best. Im curious to see how you react to all of the twists and turns and historical references. Watching Forrest Gump is like a history and life lesson in itself.
I already love that movie! Seen it a few times
@@journeymariereacts how about "Philadelphia" or "Cast Away"
Cutie pie! Great reaction
Nice reaction to a great movie. A couple movies to add to your reaction list are "Arrival" (Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker), and "Meet Joe Black" (Brad Pitt, Claire Forlani, Anthony Hopkins). Subscribed.
This is one of the best adaptations and one of the few times I say, “See the movie, then read the book.” They did a great job keeping key details and themes while leaving other things out because the medium is different. It’s a shame Elaine’s character is reduced to a bump on a log just listening to Paul, but I get it. I fully support them omitting the crimes of the other prisoners, because it would take too much time to build sympathy for them with a movie, whereas in the book it can be explained that they did really unspeakable things, but still make them sympathetic.
The only major omission that makes just about everyone pause is why they didn’t just kill John when they found him holding the two dead children. In the book we know that the lawman leading the posse is fairly competent (if not necessarily a good guy) and he has aspirations for becoming sheriff one day. He takes the guns from the father and boy before they find John and he approaches the whole situation carefully. He speaks calmly to John and takes charge because he doesn’t want a lynching or other situation that could get out of hand. I’m not sure how that could have succinctly been conveyed in the film, but it is one of the few moments that takes the viewer out of the story for a second.
Thank you for this comment! I really appreciate the background information🙏🏼
I've watched many reactions to this movie and I noticed that EVERYONE comments on how bad Percy is, but nobody seems to mention that other guards try to treat the prisoners with a certain amount of dignity- decent men trying to do a terrible job without malice.
7:39 "I don't think he did that. I think... like he tried to _save_ them... maybe."
Journey, it's encouraging that you had _this_ reaction, this early in the _movie._
Great movie! Great reaction. 👍
Michael Clark Duncan was 6’5” but they used risers to make him taller
I enjoy how you pick up on everything so dang easy it always takes me a bit to figure stuff out in these types of movies but i really enjoyed it TFS Friend! New sub here
Thanks for the sub!! Welcome😁
Loved your reaction !!!!
Thank you!! 😁
@@journeymariereacts You just made my day and net week, didn't think you'd reply thank youuu , best wishes to you.
It took me twenty years before I watched this great film. Now it’s in my top ten of all time. John’s initials are the same as Jesus Christ by no coincidence. Thank you for your reaction.❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!🙏🏼😁
When Brutus Punched Percy I was just as happy as you were. EVERYONE hated Percy.
30:27 "So he can bring somethin' back to life after it's _dead?"_
If he gets there in _time._
john's defense attorney said that it was, "like he dropped out of the sky."
😳…
A couple of things about medical care during the 1930s when this movie is set. There were no antibiotics then, so there wasn't a lot the doctor could have done. Regarding the warden's wife, back then, doctors didn't talk to women about their health. They told everything to the husbands. Women were treated like children.
You didn’t miss anything. This is a Steven King story. In the book John’s story isn’t defined. There is more to how Paul tried to learn about John and how there was evidence that John was innocent but, well, 1940’s in the south….
This story hits hard. My dad died young, younger than I am now and I’d give anything to have had more time with him. But he never lost his mind. He never fell. He was never incontinent. My mom lived till she was 85 and suffered all those things. Her Green Mile was a long one.
There wasn't any evidence that would be admissible in court. And even if Bill had lived, he was so evil he'd never confess.
Well, this is the last one I am watching before bed.
Thanks for the lovely sedsion and yhe window into your thoughts and emotions.
Msde this lonely old gramps feel really good xx
Wow I’m really glad I could do that & I’m glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching🙏🏼

Amazing reaction! Made my friday night! Im Pathetic! Thank you!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!! & no you’re nottt😁🙏🏼
Great reaction 💯💯💯💯
Thank you!! 😊
Yassss, my favourite movie!
You got it! John Coffey is Jesus. They have the same initials. He receives the neckless of St. Christopher. And he was killed by 4 men dressed in black. 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. Hes afraid of the dark because Jesus is the light. And I think the mouse represents humanity. Its a metaphor.
Look up the making of the green mile its amazing the way they made the scenes of this movie look real
32:40 "I don't even want to see him go through the process of being electrocuted"
Well, I got good news and bad news...
The mouse wasn't dead yet. Even being squished it takes time for life to completely stop. That's why he said "might still be time." The girls were already dead when he found them which is why he said "it was too late." He can heal as long as there the person/animal is still clinging to life.
Edit: Fixed typo
The reason Del speaks French is that the story's set in Louisiana and Del is Cajun.
When Coffey comes out of the prison and looks up at the night sky, he points out "Cassie; the Lady in the Rockin' Chair!"
Coffey is pointing out the constellation Casiopeia, a queen from ancient mythology who the gods placed in the heavens, chained to her throne for vainful boasts.
I have a theory that John Coffey is older than he appears, that he lived through the plantation slave times.
Escaping slaves had to use stars and constellations to direct them to freedom in the north. 'Cassie' was known to slaves as a woman in bondage; she was thought to be sitting in her rocker, maybe because her constellation tended to flip around during the course of the year. She was always in the night sky, situated adjacent to the North Star, Polaris. If you can find Cassie, you can find Polaris, which will guide you under cover of darkness to the north.
I'm thinking that is why Coffey knows of Cassie; he lived enslaved on a plantation. It's not necessarily his origin, but it does point to part of his past.
How does Coffey know how to do this?
Well, he can feel pain and illness, he can 'see' where it is, he knows instinctively what he can do to 'help it'. Over time, he's done what he does, whether he means to fix it or just make you feel better. He doesn't have the words to explain what he's doing, he just does it. And he seems to feel enough about whether it will be welcomed or not, but feels it needs to be done so does it anyway.
Coffey is totally selfless; he doesn't seem to have enough self-awareness to worry about himself, just the person suffering.
By the way, the author of the story, Stephen King, has said it's no accident that John Coffey's initials are 'JC'.
It was Coffey's plan to hold onto the demons-in-fly-form and give them to Percy, to corrupt his brain with the tumor. Coffey kinda knew Percy would kill Wild Billie. Coffey said he "punished them bad men". Percy was not bad for what he's done, but for what he is; and Percy was getting ready to transfer to Briar Ridge Mental Hospital where he had a whole new population of vulnerable people to abuse. And Wild Billie was punished not for having done bad things but for being bad; he raped and killed those little girls, and later robbed and killed others, including a pregnant woman. Percy and Billie were beyond redemption; they were bad incarnate.
There is no saving innocent John. There is no reasonable evidence to stop his execution and John was done with the horrors of what people do and intend for each other; he was ready to 'go home'. And no pint (as many have said) of clearing John's reputation with the girls' parents; even if you could convince them, the best would be them feeling crushed that the handyman they gave work, wages, and food to had done this to their family. Better they felt executing John provided justice for this tragedy.
For the record, a mouse in the wild has a 1yr lifespan, and a mouse in captivity will live less than 5 years total. Mr Jingles at his last appearance onscreen is at least 64 years old. There's no way to draw conclusions from that to Paul's 108 years, but it does argue his appointment with Death is a long ways off. And if you factor in that Coffey potentially had an extremely long life...
Thank you for this comment, it’s much appreciated!
Great reaction
Thank you!!
Congrats , you just watched one of the best movies ever 👍
John Coffee also played the King Pin in Daredevil. Sadly he passed away though
My understanding is mice only live less than 10 years. That mouse was alive and able more than 50 years after we first saw it, in other words its lived more than 5 times its normal lifetime so far.
I always interpreted this to mean tom hank's character was going to live for hundreds more years.
30:40 "He's a god. I would take him out of jail and go around healing people."
How?
It's a felony to break out of prison or to help an inmate break out of prison.
These guys would end up in cells just across the yard, and John Coffey would end up right back here.
Could they do it legally in court?
Maybe, if there's time left.
Get him to do a miracle in front of the governor, get a stay of execution long enough to allow an appeal and a new trial, then do some miracles in front of the jury.
Maybe.
But that might not even work - they can't take John Coffey to the governor, and how are they going to get the governor to come here?
But, if they do it just right, and they beat the buzzer on the few days he has left, maybe they could legally do it.
Cassie = Cassiopeia (a constellation of stars) 🙂
You know Michael Clark Duncan is in the movie “ FRIDAY “ right? …. R.I.P GREAT ACTOR
Tom Hanks passed on being the lead in Shawshank to do this film.
Very well done. Your responses are beautifully honest and thoughtful. It's no coincidence that John Coffey has the same initials as Jesus Christ.
Thank you!!
Girl who the hell is John green!!!!!! Lol had to reply to that. Keep it up!!!
Lol🤣🤣my brain wasn’t braining right then. Thanks for watching😊🙏🏼
Nice Selena shirt Journey!
Stephen King is a master storyteller.
It's a fact related to this movie, though I'm at a bit if a loss about just how they might've _related_ this fact.
In the US, we tend to fall, a _little_ too readily, into this mindset that an _effective_ justice system has to be _brutal._ People won't stop committing crimes if they're not in a position to _suffer_ as a _result._ And our annual recidivism rate is about 80%.
But the countries with the _lowest_ recidivism rates (like Norway, with 20%) don't _have_ a death sentence. They are countries in which prisons are treated like _reform_ centers; not _punishment_ centers.
If you want to see Tom Hanks overall talent as a filmmaker, got to checkout That Thing You Do. Tom not only is a supporting actor in the film, but he directed, produced, and wrote the film as well. He even wrote a few of the songs in it as well. Also, one of the best movie soundtracks of all-time is in that film.
Also, if you want to see Tom Hanks in one of his few villain roles, got to check him out in Elvis (2022; plays Elvis’ manager Col. Tom Parker). Also, his co-star who plays Elvis, Austin Butler, gives an absolutely amazing performance as Elvis Presley. He and Brendan Fraser the two frontrunners for Best Actor at the Oscars this Sunday.
I’ll add that to the list thank you! & I’ve actually already seen Elvis & thought it was an amazing performance from Tom hanks & Austin butler👌🏻
I remember watching this on vhs. This movie is morbid and traumatic
I have read that electric chairs were painful and took a while, that's why they use letal injection now.
Paul should live about 4,000 years
very good reaction. 1 - 1935 Great Depression - culture was different. Women were considered frail and Docs would not confide in them. 2 Percy - sometimes people are just evil
please please please do gran torino asap .
one of those movies that'll make most viewers really tear up due to the bitter sweet theme. Movies like this one are amongst Stephan Kings best works compared to the horror stuff he writes.
When you set the stage for yourself without knowing it-
He walking this far at his age
