    It's always a pleasure to see a younger person appreciating a classic old film. You did a great job with your commentary, figuring things out quickly and sometimes ahead of time. Very sharp. You're a delight. Thank you for this video.

      According to the lore, the cat in the Don's lap and Luca Brazi rehearsing his lines were both organic, unplanned occurances. The cat just showed up on set. And the Luca actor was rehearsing without knowing he was being filmed. Then, during an actual take, he blew his lines but stayed in character...

    I like how easy you read the movie - for some reason it confuses a lot of reactors, idunno - they don't catch everything said, or they misinterpret dialog - it's refreshing to see someone just following the story with ease - you didn't even suspect poor Enzo of being some surprise-assassin, of course not - it's Enzo the baker! Enzo came through!

    You’ll have to do part two, it’s one of the few sequels that’s as good if not better than the original

    • @jnagarya519
      @jnagarya519 Pƙed rokem

      The problem with Part II is the flashing back and forth from past to "present". Part I, of course, was spectacular, so that was done first. But the flashbacks to Vito's origins should properly have been part of Part I. For that reason Part II is jarring, and somewhat hard to follow -- the storytelling structure is primitive, crude. And for that reason it is inferior to Part I.

    • @Crazy_Diamond_75
      @Crazy_Diamond_75 Pƙed 10 měsĂci

      @@jnagarya519 That's always been my problem with it, too. It's still one of the best movies of all time, but I agree I always found those jumps jarring and that they could have been handled better. HOWEVER, I do think that Vito's rise to power belonged in the second movie, not the first. It was important to juxtapose Vito's rise to power as a respectful and respectable Don who, though he used violence, nurtured the community around him, with Michael, who clung to power by instilling fear and ruling with an iron fist.

    • @jnagarya519
      @jnagarya519 Pƙed 10 měsĂci

      @@Crazy_Diamond_75 Vito and Michael were only different in their methods; BOTH cultivated power by inducing others to OWE them. Vito was a seducer with threat behind it; Michael was honest with his threats.
      My first problem with Part II is that Vito was dead, and Michael's rise was begun in "The Godfather" (which wasn't a "Part I"). So Vito's history prior to "The Godfather" was rendered irrelevant because he was dead, and the focus of Part II was Michael's rise and fall.
      So the back-and-forth between irrelevant past and relevant present was all the more jarring.

  • @thefleasofathousandcamels6498

    To me, the key scene is outside the hospital. When Michael realizes that his hands are perfectly steady, his transformation from college boy to gangster has gone past the point of no return.

  • @BigGator5
    @BigGator5 Pƙed rokem +32

    "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."
    Good call. 👍
    Fun Fact: Lenny Montana (Luca Brasi) was so nervous about working with Marlon Brando that in the first take of their scene together, he flubbed some lines. Director Francis Ford Coppola liked the genuine nervousness and used it in the final cut. The scenes of Luca practicing his speech were added later.
    Dark Filmmaking Fact: Cinematographer Gordon Willis earned himself the nickname "The Prince Of Darkness," since his sets were so underlit. Paramount Pictures executives initially thought that the footage was too dark, until persuaded otherwise by Willis and Francis Ford Coppola that it was to emphasize the shadiness of the Corleone family's dealings.
    Historical Fact: Most of the cars in the movie have wooden bumpers. Bumpers were removed by car owners during World War II, and replaced with wooden ones. The chrome ones were turned in to help with the war effort. After the war, it took several years for them to be replaced.

    The horse's head was real. It came from a slaughterhouse where horses were being destroyed to make dog food. A member of the production went to the company, chose a horse that resembled the thoroughbred used in the earlier scene, and asked that when the time came, the head be sent to the filmmakers. The company later sent a box with the head packed in ice.

Most who react to the Godfather miss some of the finer points. The only one you missed was Enzo, the baker who showed up at the hospital. At the beginning during the wedding, the father of Enzo's girlfriend asks the Don to use his immigration connections to keep Enzo from being deported. Otherwise, you nailed each character.

    11:42 Enzo got no gun but he got a big set of balls. For him to stand tall alongside Michael like that in a crisis is a gesture of honor. These Mob cats were all about family and honor.
    Armed men were coming to kill Vito and all that stood between them was his youngest son and a humble baker. Enzo and his family won’t have ANY problems with anybody going forward. They would have been seriously under the Corleone’s protection.
    That was gangsta as hell. Don’t ever count out the bravery of an average man.

    Two behind the scenes items - one is that the guy who played Luca Brasi was actually a mob guy, one of Joe Colombo’s enforcers when they were making the Godfather in New York. Second, in the scene where Sonny beats up Carlo he actually beat the actor up in retaliation for being an asshole and carelessly hitting Talia Shire (who is Francis Ford Coppola’s sister btw) in one of the scenes were they were supposed to be having a fight. The producer, Al Ruddy, got James Cann to not pull his punches.

    Marlon Brando was still a fairly young man at that time, he stuck tissue paper in the side of his gums to make himself look older. It was much more difficult at that time for actors to age on film. Brando revolutionized on screen acting in the 1950's. Look at the difference in acting from a film from the 40's to one from the 60's onwards . It's like theatre to real life.

    The first time Carlo beat up Connie and was beaten up by Sonny was entirely natural. But it taught Carlo that if he did beat up Connie he could draw Sonny out without any of his security, so he made a deal with a rival family to set it up once more so they could kill Sonny, who otherwise would stay at home and be guarded. So the sequence where he had a prostitute call Connie to upset her and then beat her up was all staged in order to kill Sonny.

    At least Don Corleone is nice to kittycats. They never ask for favors except a belly rub. 4:32 The actor playing Luca Brassi was so nervous that he was going to do a scene with the great Marlon Brando that he did forget part of his speech and the director kept it in since it seemed so natural. 11:03 Yup, that nurse's hat popping up there made me jump when I first saw this movie. 13:33 Yup, Michael was a combat Marine officer fighting the Nazis just a year before in the war...he knows strategy & tactics and can stay cool.

    This movie is like the origin story of a super villain.
    Michael and his dad didn’t want him to be in the family business. But with his father hurt there was nobody else who could step up. Sonny was dead and Fredo is a useless idiot.
    The moment he tells his father “Pop I’m here” is a bittersweet moment for his father.

    in that day they printed versions of the paper throughout the day. You could go to a Broadway opening, then go to dinner, and pick up the late paper on yo7r way home that had the review of the play.
