That's exactly what I think as well. I don't think either of them are horrible people...she just needs to control him as she once felt so helpless, yet is also acting out with multiple men as a result of that abuse; and he is still looking for mom's love and approval. After watching a second time, my thought is that this couple are engulfed in a serious trauma bond. For her, it's being used and discarded by random men and then running into the arms of her boyfriend for the comfort he provides. She also tells us she is medicating depression and anxiety with "lots" of pot, which doesn't reassure me about her general health😟 (side note: I worked serving adults living with mental illnessfor over a decade. Medicating depression with pot is a common but very poor plan.)

This painfully dovetails with his own childhood:

This is rejection in the most absolute terms from the one woman from whom every human being is supposed to justly expect love.
His grandmother then adopted him and tried to replace all the love he lacked from the mother who rejected him in such an absolute sense.
But we know that he was not the sole recipient of his grandmother's love: she was so loving that he had to share her attention with "every kid in town."
There's just too many obvious parallels with childhood experience here for me to think they have gone to good therapy and worked through all this so they can have a relationship that is fully conscious of their feelings and potential underlying motivations.
I'm also concerned that they tried and failed to get pregnant for years. That can often be a serious blow to the self esteem of either partner. Many people feel like failures, or like less of a man/woman.
Maybe they would go get a year of good therapy and still want this exact form of their relationship.....but they could be happier people in their lives overall.
Even if they only did the new EMT therapy that involves eye movement to help process trauma, that would probably contribute to an increased sense of well being and peace for them.
They both have some pretty painful skeletons that were thrown into their closets through no fault of their own.
