I love how bad John Malkovich's accent is, yet I wouldn't have it any other way.
Agreed. I think in an interview he said he knew that the accent was horrible but the director loved it. Pretty sure they didn’t have the bells to tell him.
According to Matt Damon, Malkovich leaned in between takes and whispered "I'm a terrible actor"
“MAHHHDERFACKKAR!!!” 😂😂😂
“Pyay dett myan heez monny.”
Right up there with AL Pacino's accent in Scarface
For those saying, "wow, how honorable he's going to pay him". The guy runs a high stakes underground game. If he didn't pay him, his game is ruined, his reputation is ruined. No one will ever play there again, and teddy wouldn't be allowed to play at any other games. He pays him the 70k he won, people see that he's legit and won't screw someone, even an enemy. So now, he'll make 10x moving forward running his game.

The great thing about Rounders is that it is CONSTANT narration UNTIL the climatic scene. The entire movie is teaching us how to appreciate the action in this scene.
Good observation.

I've watch this movie over 20 times.. Still good everytime.
Not nearly as many times, but still several (I think I own it actually, haha). Big fan of no limit, and it really is still to this day the only movie that comes closest to portraying how no limit is really played. It gets into the psychology of betting and spotting tells, which is something no other movie about, or involving, poker has been able to replicate

@M D........Likewise. One of my all-time favourite films. Thankfully, I know absolutely nothing about poker or gambling - but this film contains all the right ingredients: exceptional and beautifully poetic dialogue, brilliantly directed and acted, amazingly nuanced and believable characters, thoroughly absorbing storyline and a haunting soundtrack.
I have the DVD and watch it at least twice a month. It never disappoints and like a fine Peter Bruegel painting, you always discover something new every time you see it. In fact, I would strongly argue that it's Damon's, Turturro's and Norton's finest performances. But to me [and I'm not Jewish] Martin Landau's stunning 'Destiny chooses us' soliloquy is utterly mesmerising.

I met John Malkovich over 10 years ago when I was an extra in Secreriat. He is a wonderful, compassionate, and truly great person who loves animals, respects people, treats others with respect and in my opinion one of the most versatile and talented actors ever. When he portrays a character you really believe he is that character.
How were u able to be an extra? What scene was it? Can I see it? How much did you make?
@@onlyfacts3101 Well I stood in line for almost 5 hours for the casting call, and considering my appearance and the fact I actually had my own wardrobe of early 70s vintage clothing I became a shoe in. One of the scenes you can find me in (of 6 total) I was a horse trainer in the stable after the first race where they lost at Belmont. In that scene, I was standing next to a horse named "Topper" which Malkovich had ridden in a previous movie (Jonah Hex). In this scene, Malkovich fires the jockey who walks over to me. Between takes, Malkovich walked over to me and the horse and spoke. There's more to the story, but I want to keep it short.
Also, I made roughly $100 per day. Lots of details about how that worked out that are tedious to explain.

When I was younger and didn't know anything about poker, I thought Matt Damon played this so well. Years later and many hands of poker later, Matt's gestures, comments and demeanor is so obvious he hit on the flop. 😂
Except when he said, "don't splash the pot". That could've been perceived as the words of a man going on tilt.

Watching this again, it’s really obvious that Mike’s got a monster hand. He’s smiling, talking, completely relaxed, and acting (overly acting) like he’s lost, confused, gambling. Betting is a sign of a strong hand, but check-calling is, a lot of times, the sign of a monster hand.

There are things I really don't like about Rounders, but also things I like a lot. The performances are good, and Malkovich in particular is just a joy to watch. One of my favorite characters by this wonderful actor. I've heard people complain that his Russian accent isn't right. They don't get it. It's not Malkovich's accent. It's Teddy's accent. Teddy knows that people fear him, and he works to create and enhance the mystique around him. Teddy KGB uses that accent, that speech pattern, to keep his opponents off balance. It's brilliant.

It is a good movie, especially for poker enthusiasts. I think the reason it doesnt get more respect honestly is because it is also a movie about addiction, which although can be real powerful at times, rarely make them popular films for people overall. It definitely has a target audience, and that hurts its popularity in my mind, but as you said, it doesn't take away from it being an underrated, well made film

Outstanding flick from the opening scene .👌
2:10…What’s always bugged me about this scene is Teddy talking like Mike had gone all in. He still had a huge stack and stood to only lose about 6k on the hand if he folded.
Teddy wanted to own him not play patty cake. See either you’re there to win big or you lose no in between
Mike had a time limit. If Teddy had won the pot it would have made it much much harder for Mike to close it out, and Teddy knew that.
Exactly! If you think your opponent missed a draw, they'll never call a river bet anyway. If Teddy had any hand with showdown value all he needed to do was check the river.
Right. Remember Mike wasn’t there to beat Teddy KGB and win his money back; he was there specifically to win enough money by dawn to pay off his debt to Grama (and by extension Teddy KGB himself). As long as Mike is still at the table Teddy wins.
Both players know this, which is why Teddy taunts Mike to keep him there, and why he gets so frustrated when Mike plays conservatively - he’s supposed to be betting aggressively into Teddy because he’s on the clock - and why it’s so satisfying that Mike completely turns the tables.
2:43 Mike did go all in. Right before he turns his cards over, he pushes his entire stack forward.
I've always loved the look on the guy's face in the background at 2:48. Just seeing the cards and going "oooof... that had to hurt..."
Great movie, great actors. My favorite.
I say we get Malkovich, Damon, and Norton to come back and see how everyone is doing at the Chesterfield Club 25 years later.
The way it ended sure made you think Rounders II was gonna happen!
And Famke...
John Malkovich totally steals every scene he’s in-“ALL NIGHT, cHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!”
Johnny Chan checks a lot too. In fact if you watch the movie on DVD with commentary Phil Hellmuth and another poker player laugh at that scene and say, there you are Johnny check check lol
Teddy was actually saying "Czech, Czech, Czech"
I know right, what a Nit
Teddy: "Im a genius poker player and I've got a good hand so I'm gonna bet amounts that are never gonna call on the river except hands that beat me" *eats some oreos*
People say Malkovich accent was over the top....well as a guy who used to handle some business for certain people in the Seagate community, I've gotta say - his accent is on POINT. Some of them literally speak that way.
The dramaticism of Teddy's string betting is on another level.

Two things about this scene never made sense to me.
- First, Mike is already well ahead in chips and has Teddy covered. So even if he lost this hand, he is still playing. But that's Hollywood.
- Second, when the flop comes out and Mike calls Teddy's bet, Teddy says 'you're on a draw, Mike.' This line never made sense to me. The flop was 6-7-10 rainbow. So the only hand Mike could have had that would have been a draw was 4-5 for the bottom end of the straight. The only other hand that would have made sense was 8-9 (what he had) but that's not a draw, it's a made hand. It makes no sense that Teddy would have been betting so hard into Mike thinking he was on a draw in that spot. If I were him, I'd have had alarm bells going off like crazy.
i think he meant flush draw.

@@jaymoar3561 Essentially this scene isn't realistic because in the movie, they act as if tells are a physical/biological thing. For example, Teddy KGB busts an Oreo in half whenever he has the winning hand, but somehow does it without consciously realizing he does it. In real life poker no half decent player is giving away the fact that they have a good hand with physical tells. It's easy to avoid doing. It's still my favorite poker movie though, regardless of that bit of unrealistic plot.
@@counterfeit4450 thanks for the explanation!
@@counterfeit4450 and he can't make you think that is his"tell"?
I've always like what John said at the end. Imagine if people actually did what they were supposed to and kept their word!!! This world would be such a better place. For me that make the movie fantastic!!
He had no choice but to pay him.
@ValueinYou Faith in God. Vengeance. Justice. Principle. Serpent being cast out. Dare. What do I have to prove? I haven't been charged with anything. Arrest Me. Miranda. Charges. Rights. I don't care if Timothy settles or doesn't. Lecture Me. at the end of the day, there will be a false arrest, an attempt to hospitalize rather than a trial, and it simply won't work. And at the end of the day, the U.S. Government and the illuminati, who have framed Me in their own image will face a $1 lawsuit with all damages to charity. Timothy will get %5 of a lawsuit, and whether he likes it or not, he's get 2.5 million, to 25 million, to 250 million in punitive damages. That's his business. Do whatever. Go ahead. Faith in God.
If he doesn't pay him his ring is ruined. No one except the desperate (i.e broke) will play at his games because no one trusts him to honor his word and pay.
Just because he paid him doesn't mean he wouldn't have his legs broken 6 months later for the lack of respect. Don't forget KGB bought up Worm's $10k debt just so he could own him after he got out of prison several years later. He did that purely for revenge the only way it would make any financial sense is if KGB always knew that Mike would eventually get conned by Worm and end up taking over the debt.
such a great scene
I love this movie and this scene.
Sudden urge to buy a track suit!
All poker players love this movie. And all poker players know this is never ever ever how that runs out. Board woulda paired for sure or a backdoor flush woulda showed up
And that check/call play is nearly always setting a trap. Still good movie.
@@JB-rl4ik i mean not really, youd do the same with any straight draw or top pair marginal kicker sort of hand, lot of combos of hands to take that line with, J9 J8 85 54 were all possible combos he could've had. Plus the villain here will probably have at least top pair with some semi connected card like a 9 or 8 that served as a blocker to the nut straight. And the river check was very very strange, misses out on a lot of value by not betting there with the nuts on average, a check there assuming your opponent is a good player is usually a concession of defeat, or that his A8 or A9 now hit top pair and has showdown value.

Love this film and the poker great too
One of my favorite scenes
Absolutely love this film & the fact he gets one over Teddy KGB right at the end...🤣👌👌
"He beat me. Straight up. Pay him. Pay that man his money" The world could learn a lot from that statement. Keep your Word. Fulfill contracts. Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. Life is not a game so don't beat others down✌️😎
The only reason he paid him was because the place was full. If you renege, your casino loses all credibility and it goes under. Simple as that. There is NO moral lesson here.
@@petep5207 "If you renege, your casino loses all credibility and it goes under" That's keeping good morals. Same as let your let be yes and no be no. Don't be a liar and people trust you. You'll keep good friends. Great moral lesson. Those however that look to make quick gain have few morals.
One of the greatest movies ever
"Pyaaaay him, pyaay that man his myoney." love it.
The KGB reaction is so funny trying to hold his chips back, then when he realizes it is pointless he throws the chips away 🤣🤣🤣
If you're referring to 2:46 he is actually just moving the chips he splashed the pot with so he can see the board and confirm the straight.
@@sqrlmonger ah you might be right, I’ve never thought of that. It always seemed to me that his eyes are looking around the chips instead of focused at the cards. So it has always gave me the impression that he had this emotional reaction to hold his chips back.
That was a more satisfying ending than Good Will Hunting.
This wasn't from Good Will Hunting?
How you like them apples 🍎
He's going to play to the biggest poker game.. in GWH, he's going to chase his GF, I say GWH was more satisfying dude.
agree to disagree
Son of a bitch.. he stole my line.
Such a good movie
One of the best movie scenes, ever.
John Malkovich....one of the best !!!!
Teddy is like Phil Hellmuth blowing up.. all with the shouting and cursing. Followed by blind betting running in to obvious traps.. and than in the end the exlposion... haha love it

Brilliant film this never forget watching this
When he beats Teddy and says You satisfied now Teddy? Cause I can go on all night bustin' you up! That took a set of nuts. I know it's a movie but that hits home for me.
Malkovich is a fantastic actor
This is one of my favorite scenes out of all movies
I've been quoting this scene for 20 years now.
That scene nails it! Shut!

They agreed before the match he would do that on his deals in exchange the oreos were aloud to give him advice.
@@daltonlambert1409 No wonder he got so mad at the oreos, they betrayed him

"And in my club I will string bet whenever the fuck I please" 1:25 and 2:28 . Of course Mike loves it and doesn't protest after flopping the nuts.
I am not much of a player myself, but string bets aside, they both played that hand terribly and the river all-in was something even fish don't do. Since no draws materialized after the flop, any hand that calls an all-in beats him for sure?
@@alatus7242 If Teddy had nothing, going all in is the right move there.
Actually, Mike SHOULD have protested in order to feign weakness.
@@jbond9596 No. Teddy should have SLAMMED on the brakes after Mike called the turn. Mike had something. But as was pointed out earlier, KGB had TT in his hand for the set. But of course, if he did have TT and he thought he was better than Mike, he shouldn't have moved all-in and risk a fold. Ain't poker a great game?!
This is seriously one of my favorite movies of all time
For people new to the game, when you hear someone talking like Matt Damon is… RUN!
Yeah, never trust someone playing the poor victim while simultaneously placing thousands of dollars in the pot.
The whole movie is about that stupid "Tell" while every other hand Mike is in he's completely face up with all his stupid acting
The only way this could work is if KGB was convinced that Damon's character is a noob. The film begins by Damon explaining that he came to play KGB several times to make him think he's a noob and he lost big to him in a quite noobish way. So it makes sense that KGB underestimated him. He's also a very aggressive player and they can get caught in their own momentum.
Then again, Damon's character was well known in the poker community so it would make sense KGB had heard him being a pro.
@@immortaljanus hes known as being a really good low limit player, he never says hes played with kgb several times...kgb sits the big game which mike had never played in.
@@immortaljanus NO. If KGB thought that Mike was a noob, he wouldn't have made those bets because a noob would call him down. Assuming KGB was bluffing or semi-bluffing.
Matt learned to play when he was with Ocean and the them other 9 guys
The honor that John M. showed in this scene helped cement the beauty and honesty of this game
"pay that man his money". Greatest quote to all pokers players around the world..and I want to wish all poker players run good....I never say good luck
