My grandmother worked in Hollywood back in the sixties as a drama coach, dancer, actor, and singer and Danny Kaye became her boss at one point. She still tells many wonderful stories of memories she has of talking with him and watching him perform along with a handful of other special well-known entertainers. She especially loves telling of the encouraging advice he gave her one time when she was trying to decide what to do with her career. Because she listened to his advice, she ended up moving to the town where she happened to meet my grandfather for the first time, and not too long after, my dad came to be. Her realizing how special having a family could be and still have a talented career was something I knew she treasured learning through it all. I always found that fascinating. I have always felt a special connection to Danny Kaye through her while growing up, watching every movie of his, enjoying his comedy acts, and listening to his songs and audio stories (the stories for children in particular) for hours on end, even though he passed away ten years before I was born. And of course, hearing some behind the scenes from my grandmother regarding many of those things was an exciting addition to it all, not to mention her teaching me to act, dance, and sing and pointing me toward many of these wonderful performers as inspiration. He was an absolute legend, and there will never be another Danny Kaye.

He's one of those greats that today's entertainers would be hard to match up to: film, stage and television. I grew up watching his television shows and his movies, even whenever they were shown on television, it was always amazing to see his talent. He could sing, dance, comedy and drama that were amazing. Granted that there were other multi-talented entertainers of his generation at the time, it's hard to believe that entertainers like Danny Kaye, Danny Thomas, Bob Hope and so many others are gone, and younger generations don't have such inspirational performance.

Our table was close to the stage and I still remember him looking at me and singing a song for me. It was a childhood experiance that still makes me smile. Such a multitalented man. I’m glad you spoke of Danny!s “dark side,” which was putting it kindly. I was blessed with a 55 year career as a studio singer and my first steady job was as a member of the vocal backup group on the 60s Danny Kaye Show. I was 19. Harvey Korman got his start on this show and I simply rejoiced when he went to the Carol Burnett Show where he got to shine. Danny was nasty to Harvey. One time we all sang behind Harvey in a marching tune. Danny told the music arranger to purposely mess up the rhythm and we rehearsed (unbeknownst to Harvey) it til the performance which damn near destroyed Harvey. This was just so mean. I personally bore up for five seasons but had the opportunity to work on the Dean Martin Show, which I jumped at. What a relief to get away from that awful Danny Kaye. On the contrary, I can’t say enough about the heaven it was to work with Dean.

Apparently when he and Basil Rathbone were in the Court Jester, Rathbone couldn’t get over how Danny had to learn how to use a sword and then outplayed him!

For those of you who think fondly of the on-screen Danny Kay sorry to burst your bubble. I knew Kay’s long standing personal assistant (Mr. Bonus) who’d nothing nice to say about Kay. Though Kay’s assistant acknowledged his talent and intellect he said Danny Kay was totally egotistical superior to everyone and a absolute tyrant. According to Mr. Bonus, Kay navigated his business (and personal) relationships by after belittling and garroting whomever, Kay would heavily compensate (bribe) the offended to keep them around and quite about his ill behavior...

These rumors were rife and probably true. Introducing them at the Emmys, He got snotty about “I Spy”, which was played in his time slot on another network, saying, “If they get any hotter I’ll be off the air…” dead silence from the audience; a real trump moment… just s little hint of the covert snottiness.

I couldn’t agree more. Tyrant is the perfect word. For 55 years I had a blessed and busy studio singing career and my first steady job, at 19, was as part of the vocal group on Danny’s 60s TV show. My most blessed day was getting to leave that hideous man and go to NBC where for 6 heavenly years I worked on the Dean Martin Show. Best memories ever.
