Dennis Crosby, born in 1934, sought to carve his own path in the entertainment industry but was overshadowed by his father's colossal fame. His life was plagued by personal demons, including addiction, which tragically culminated in his death by suicide in 1991 at the age of 56.
Lindsay Crosby, born in the same year as Dennis, faced similar challenges and ventured into acting, though his career never soared to the heights of his father's. Lindsay's battle with alcoholism mirrored the struggles of his siblings and culminated in his own tragic suicide in 1989, leaving a painful void in the Crosby family.
Gary Crosby, the eldest of the three, grappled with the weight of expectations as the first-born son of Bing Crosby. His attempts at establishing himself as a singer and actor were met with limited success, and his relationship with his father was marred by abuse and neglect. Gary's candid memoir, "Going My Own Way" (1983), revealed the painful truths about his upbringing. He, too, wrestled with addiction and passed away in 1995 at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy that explored the complexities of family dynamics under the spotlight.
In the end, the lives of Bing Crosby's sons were marked by the harsh realities of fame, addiction, and strained relationships with their famous father. Their tragic endings serve as a somber reminder of the profound challenges that can accompany a life lived in the shadow of an iconic figure, highlighting the darker aspects of the glittering world of show business.

I briefly met Gary at an art center in Petoskey, MI, when he gave a talk about his book. Afterwards I introduced myself and he said h.e was working on opening a clinic for recovering alcoholics and he was doing some counseling. I told him he would really do well at that. He said,"From your mouth to God's ear." His mother was a severe alcoholic and spent most of the time in bed and he had to go see her every day after school. He never knew if she would kiss his cheek or slap him across the face, depending on her level of intoxication. 😢

People fell in love with their personas, while their true characters were often well hidden. Sorry your mother was saddened by this. What alcoholism, he had that well and truly behind him very early into his first marriage because of Dixie's intervention. As for Gary's book he was reinterviewed in 9 hrs of taped conversations in which he was challenged regarding stories from his book with research by the interviewer. I can't remember writing that as I had been drinking at the time was his response. VERIFIED when the researcher contacted the books co-author. The book was pieced together maybe read how. Gary spoke to his stepsister regarding the book in which he told her it wasnt really the way it went down and why it had been written$$$$ Sad that two books, one completely debunked and the other pieced together but not really written by the son damaged Bing's reputation. Maybe read the newer info regarding Bing done by a brilliant writer who has spent decades researching, interviewing..including Phil and Gary..and who was given unprecedented access to Bing's correspondence etc. He does not sugarcoat Bing at all but gives a fair and balanced assessment. Bing was a good man.

I recall watching a TV interview with Katherine Crosby, Bing's second wife, in the early '80's on the Merv Griffin show I think it was. As Katherine related how Bing demanded absolute perfection and quiet from his boys when he was home, she let it drop that she would do anything to ensure that peace for him. Merv nonchalantly asked "anything?" to which she replied, "yes," and went on to say something like, "even if it meant killing them." It was so shocking that the audience erupted in horror and anger, and I recall the TV screen going blank for a split second before Merv reappeared saying "we're going to cut for a commercial" or something, which the show did. When the commercials ended and Merv reappeared, Katherine Crosby was no longer there and the show commenced as if she never had been. I've never forgotten this, especially when the youngest son's book came out about his father's abuse. I have no reason to disbelieve him. You can look this up, hopefully it hasn't been removed from the archives.

    • @tomodonovan5931
      @tomodonovan5931 Před 4 měsíci +5

I was born the same year. Parents had 8 kids, and I was #4.
We did not get much. My dad drank, and did not use his head
much. Sometimes he crossed the line at discipline. Like I said
earlier, the drinking did not help. He did not put much into the
family, but everyone except the youngest, and the one who
married a female crook succeeded. My mom did not fight to
protect us against my dad's drinking. But she fought tooth & nail
for the youngest who was the only drug addict in the family. He did
not go through half of what his older siblings went through, yet he
quit school, and got in serious trouble which landed him in prison.
He had a 2nd chance at life, and blew that as well. Robbing everyone
from his family to his best friends. He is gone now, dead from a
polluted body of 35 years to drugs. Parents can only do so much, but
the kids have no choice but to make it on their own. Maybe what Crosby
demonstrated was called tough love. My family got it, and both parents
did not show emotional love to the kids. We knew in their own way they
loved their kids, but they never rewarded us for the positive things we did.
They only(mostly my dad) punished us for doing the bad things. That is a
very confusing upbringing. I remember an old Gomer Pyle episode where
the mess Sergeant Hacker saying his old Sergeant said you got out of the
pot what you put into it. That was my dad spot on. We all succeeded without
his input. He wanted an officer in the family, but again, what did he put into his
family? Today, my dad would be in jail for what he pulled in the early 70s. Today's
world is worse than what it was when we were young, or is it? I don't see the same
world that I knew as a kid, but then there may be someone who thinks the complete
opposite. Strange, but Crosby's kids were around my parents age. They could have
married my mom, and she was a wee bit younger than his kids. There is a reason I
did not bring kids into the world. And my upbringing was a big part of it. I knew a
handful of girls who felt the same way. I respected their choice, and could not
understand the ones who could not respect my choice.

It is really a sobering thing, to realize that whatever flaws your parents had, did affect you in some way. And most parents do their best...not so much, from what i see nowadays! Anyway, I am old now, and still have my mother around...she is 96, still fairly lucid, but her body is failing, of course. She was the dominant one in our family. I have a rather split personality--my father was very outgoing, loved talking to people--and I do too...yet, I also have a part of me that is cautious and reserved. My mother was like that, and still is! Not a bad combo, really! I thanked my dad many times, as he drifted into slow senility, for doing his best as a parent...and I still tell my mom the same thing...I was lucky to have decent parents.

It proves that things aren't what they always seem. Prayers for all who suffer. I had a narcissistic mother. She blamed many things on my dad, and me only to find out after I was grown. They are smart like a fox. Sadly she passed of Alzheimer's in 2015 unable to hide as she always had. Jekyll, and hide personality. Family had no idea. She had a sad phony existence. Psychiatrists say one or both parents cause this by the sick way they treat their child or children. She was very cruel to me, but treated my brother as if she put him on a pedestal, and could do no wrong. He was a wonderful, kind, incredible person who couldn't do enough for others. He did nothing to cause this, but as an adult said he carried a lot of guilt for the way she treated me, and our dad. Dad had been a WWII POW. In an interview, one of the sons described Bing beating them with a studded belt until they bled. It was eerie when the son stated that Bing would do this without displaying any emotion. He would then go back to reading the paper or whatever he had been doing before the beating, all with NO emotion. the son was asked if he would consider meeting his new half-siblings. NO! He stated that doing so would mean that what had happened was all right and it wasn't.

Did you read that Bing acknowledged that occasionally he used the belt and only for the most serious indiscretions. He noted that belt was used maybe 4-5 times during the boys upbringing...one time when the boys took Dixie's pet canary and plucked it clean whilst it was still alive. It died and Dixie was very very upset. Bing who loved animals...smacked the boys on the behind. GARY who was the only one out of 7 siblings to supposedly write a negative view of his childhood did spend time with Bing's second wife....who wrote about some of her experiences with the first four sons in her books...and Mary, Bing's daughter, talked to Gary.

The sad thing is they don't realize the trauma they've been through till they hit rock bottom such as drugs or alcohol. And if it hurts you bad enough you suppress it you don't want to remember it you just want to remember the good times. So my thought is when the son made that statement he had suppressed the bad things so much that all he could remember were the good things. Now the years passed he started remembering The human mind is a complicated organ no to work the same way. That has been proven on the battlefields of war some minds can handle it, and some mind's can't.

My brothers had a long look back when I restrained myself from ever speaking to my family members for 20 or 30 years. When mom died they all really wanted me to come around. There was quite a bit of contrite behavior then by them. Corporal punishment from an early age is a bit like the ancient Spartan Agoge when from the age of 7 the kids are taught some very hard lessons and tortured to toughen them up for training. I'm like that now. One of the brothers who set me up is in prison for fraud and really eating crow a lot. It's amazing how getting your ass kicked early on causes you to watch out for possible disciplinary actions and more beatings. We were preacher's kids. Back then kids roamed the streets with pellet guns and trashcan lid shields and had battles. I made a shank Bowie knife age 5 1/2 with a piece of spring steel and a file. I became the most dangerous kid around but just kept to myself + out of trouble. These skills played out very well all my life. I'm 72 and tough as nails.

It seemed to me that it was explained that Bing Crosby was a perfectionist and ruled with an iron fist, which might’ve been too much for these boys to handle emotionally. To lose one son to suicide is bad enough but to lose two raises some questions. BC was certainly not the easy going personality he played in public. He was abusive mentally, physically and verbally toward his sons and certainly had the means to be more financially supportive. You are not interpreting Gary’s seemingly contradictory statements about his upbringing correctly. It is very, very common for childhood abuse victims to not recognize their own experiences for what they are until well into adulthood. If there is another factor to blame like excessive drinking, it can take even longer. Bing recognized his failings even before his own kids seem to see it. What was Bing’s childhood like. The takeaway here should be about breaking cycles of abuse and mistreatment.

The opening lists 4 children, but only the 3 boys were discussed as being abused. What about the daughter? What about how common alcoholism was common back then, and his wife was an alcoholic, and the children spent more of their time with her? Bing was very busy with his career but still included his sons in many of his programs. Here I go again: what about the daughter?. Why did this site have to include for each son that their careers never matched their fathers? Did they admire and love him more than they feared him? Did any of the boys have children, and how did they do? Alcoholism can run in families, and we know more now than we did back then. What is it with this generation that we have to tear apart past successful people? Wonder what the future will think of us!

Dixie, Bings first wife, suffered from extreme shyness and somewhat low confidence. She apparently did not enjoy performing...Bing tried to encourage her to record with him etc. which she did do, but he acknowledged it was a huge effort to get her to do so. They had what was called a Chowder Club with friends where they would do skits and perform but only with friends..Dixie was the star of the family when she married and people tried to steer her away from marrying Bing saying she would end up supporting him. Early into the marriage Dixie left and gave Bing an ultimatum to quit drinking etc. He did and was highly successful in controlling this with only the very occasional lapse. He became something of a tea tottaller. He could sit with and nurse one drink only after that....very disciplined which his son also noted. I dont think Bing made Dixie give up anything ... rather she did not enjoy the Hollywood phoniness and was content to stay on the sidelines whilst Bings career soared into the stratosphere.

As for Gary, he never made superstar like his father, but he was a pretty successful actor appearing in many movies and tv shows, including a semi regular role for 7 yrs on Adam 12. And you mentioned their sister, Mary Frances. She was their half sister from Bing's second marriage to former actress Kathryn Grant. She also had 2 brothers, Harry Lillis III, and Nathaniel. In school you could get the strap from the principal if you disrupted the teacher and were sent to the principal's office. If the belt had cracks in it it really stung. However, if that's as good as it gets, the kids are essentially raising themselves, with notable scrutiny from the folks who can't be botherd with parenting. Kids want a role model and a hero, if the parent isn't such, they've failed. I imagine having the world view a situation completly out of context adds to the negative impact. Seems Hollywood is awesome at creating misery while presenting something very different.

Always a challenge looking back at parenting from years gone by. There was a different set of norms whether they were right or wrong. Most children in that time period could expect spankings by a belt-and fathers were often more concerned about careers-it was a societal expectation. Not saying this was good or should be glossed over, but it was a reality of the time.

Bing was unkind first to his first wife. When she found out she had terminal cancer she was do worried about telling Bing "because he would "kill her". Dixie drank heavily which may have been becauseNof Bings demands for perfection. The narrator needs to do more reading Bing's only daughter was born long after his 4 sons with Dixie were grown.. in fact Mary Frances took great pains not to let her Father find out she was living with her boyfriend because she was told that he would leave her out of his will. Mary Frances wanted her chunk of chaching.. Bing loved his booze but never got caught. He had a great voice and good comedic timing but the man himself was horrible to the women he was involved with and his children.

Was Bing hard on his sons? Probably as he was born and raised in a different time when children were "seen and not heard". Did he go overboard in the punishment and discipline? Yes, but not as Gery wrote of. Every childhood leaves scars and some amount of pain. What my parents did to their children would make what Bing did look like a picnic. In the end, as much as I feel sorry for what happened to his sons, ultimately, THEY made the choice to do what they did. There comes a certain time in your life when you have to accept responsibility for YOUR actions and get help for your past. If Gary's last name was anything but Crosby he would've moved out at 18 and lived his life.

@@colleen4everEasy.. Gary was reinterviewed in 9 hrs of taped interviews in which he was asked about certain stories in his book vs research. He couldn't remember writing certain things because he had been drinking heavily. Verified by the co-author when contacted. The book was pieced together. Also sad is that Gary spoke with his stepsister and told her why the book was written and that it wasn't really how it went down. Funny also that I read an interview with Gary regarding his own parenting which he acknowledged he came to see the need for rules and boundaries and that he spanked on occasion. The only thing he did differently was that he listened to his sons side of things more.. but he did seem to incorporate some of his parents things. His son adored him.

Violence against children was very common back then by the parents. Often physical violence as discipline has gone back generations . Today parents are taking away the kids video games , toys , and privileges. Also Father Knows best never hit the kids TV show and Leave it to Beaver and Gidget. Maybe producers wanted to teach good parenting. Grounding is a very good disciplinary action towards kids. ❤
