    Hi Jordan,
So recently after sub contracting to one Sparky for the past 18 months he had his 1st quiet spell which has left me out of work for 2 weeks.
I joined my builder and in 4 weeks I've had 3 jobs completed and tendered for about 15 ish. I like my builder but it definitly takes time and I say to create urgency and call first definitly helps win the work. I've had a few time wasters who pretend there interested but probably are just using your quote as a base.
I advertised on gumtree theres about 5 other sparks In my area who do, its £10. I've been on for 2 or 3 weeks and had one job but been bumped down due to others bumping there advert.
I'm going to go in face to face with letting agents I do know someone who is quite well known in the local one so believe this could be a good start.
Also I think that local showrooms ie bathrooms kitchens could be good so will be giving them a knock.
In the next 12 weeks I'll tally up my profit over advertisement and find out where was my best return.
I dont know any Builders or many other trades but feel with persistence I can get there.
    Thanks for video

I've found Gumtree can be a good source of enquiries but it does tend to be people who want jobs done cheaply, so probably won't suit you.
I always ask every new caller where they got my number from. I then input that into a spreadsheet chart of all the places I advertise, so I can see at a glance the number of calls from each source, which is also compared to the cost of advertising for each source, so I get an average of the cost of each call. This may seem a bit OTT but it shows me quickly how much it costs per call from each source and overall. This is all after the fact, of course, so is simply descriptive of the sources. The real trick is knowing where to get the biggest bang for your buck in the first place, which is the eternal bugbear. The enviable position to be in is where all calls come from word of mouth, which costs nothing - here's hoping. 😀

John Dufton I do this too, I also use my builder but I haven’t found it quite as successful as others have been but then I do notice not many leads get posted in areas I’d prefer to work so that doesn’t help either I’ve noticed a lot of time wasting customers that just wanna know prices or aren’t prepared to pay realistic prices I already have a 5-9 roofing job so to speak but I try to get myself a few little private jobs for the weekends so I don’t mind going a bit cheaper on the labour however some literally expect you to work for peanuts I had one guy who expect a skilled experienced roofer to work for less then £120 a day and claimed he just wanted a good deal 😂

Only tried advertising once in them local free magazines. Waste of money. The company I used to work for did council work mainly in municipal buildings. It worked fine on day rate or pricing for years. Then it went onto national schedule of rates and the gaffer called it a day. He was over 70 and had made his money though. I just work for private landlords now. Nothing at all for end users and therefore no need for advertising. Excellent videos thanks.

Most haven't even claimed their own business, they haven't updated their opening times, etc. and this would also apply to sparks. I use rated people and built up a large customer base from it. Tip is to never buy a lead which has already been bought, never buy a lead thats over a few hours old... if you buy and the customer doesn't give you the job you can request your money back on Maybe 4 jobs per month...
I recently started using my builder and found that only the people with reviews get the job and its a race to the bottom. If 5 tradesmen get short listed they race for the cheapest quote...
I think its an amazing way to build customers.
I know other gas engineers who can not fathom the idea of paying for work!
But I see it as changing £5 lead for a boiler swap into a job I can mate £900 for the day then you would be stupid to not do it...

I never advertise , I rely on word of mouth recommendations and several bonafide British builders that I do regular work for and this has kept me busy for the last 20 years or so , I think that these lead company's are a waste of time and they are just out to milk as much money out of tradesmen as they can and from what I have been told by other guys that have used them is that most of the work is going to unqualified east euros that will do the work for next to nothing as they have no overheads and the punters use them because they are cheap , and when things go wrong the east euros are gone and just re register new details with these lead milking company's that are springing up all the time , this is the way it is and until the government Bring in some legislation to combat the problem then it will continue and more and more of these Micky mouse lead company's will be setting up with the sole intention of making as much money as possible for very little effort , it's a pity that all the unions in this country went down the pan as they would have stopped this happening in the first place , the USA is a good example of how it should be done with only bonafide qualified traders that are licensed in there local region to be able to tender for work and any home owners that are found to be using unlicensed traders get hit with a $ 10.000 fine or 6 months jail time , we should adopt this method in the UK and that would give all legitimate traders an even playing field in which to operate and do business in.........end of rant.

I had contacts from the people I had worked for when I was employed I do a lot of work with builders doing extensions, loft conversions, new builds, barn conversions etc I don’t really do too much of adding a socket here and there or replacing light fittings I can’t be bothered with the hassle that comes with the little jobs clients don’t always understand that you have regulations to follow with regards to rcd protection, bonding etc. So having the contacts and starting out with bigger jobs helped And kept me busy I now do a lot of new builds from big one offs for clients to developments of 6-10 houses.

But that does mean spending a bit more on advertising to keep the work flowing in.

I don’t really have a problem with the prices side of it we are not the cheapest either like you said yourself but when people know you and know what they are getting in return they are happy to pay for your service. Private customers pay up on time though don’t they where builders generally don’t. I tend to specialise a bit in rako smart home lighting systems as well so these sort of things you can charge good rates for.

probably about 90% of your work will be from word of mouth recommendations from people you have done work for the only advertising i do is about £30 per month on yell. In my opinion all these advertising websites like my builder and check a trade etc is just a money making racket best places to pick up work is local trade pages on facebook etc. Also when you first start it can be tempting to go in cheap with quotes just to get a job but you never make money doing that but it is hard to get your name out when you first start but if you do good work it will get more and more over time. Everything has its down side but on the whole i say go for it i have never looked back
