The most attentive Adam has ever been in the show’s history.
In eighth grade, one of the teachers thought it would be a good idea to have the entire grade watch this movie in the school auditorium as a learning experience. We disrupted the entire school with how fucking hard we were laughing at this movie, at one point the principal came in to say she was disgusted with our behavior. I Am Sam was referenced and quoted by our grade all the way up to our high school graduation, and the school never screened that movie again for the students.
I had the exact same shit happen to me. We had to write an essay on the movie as well and so many people just trashed the shit out of it, and get sent to the office. Was so fuckin funny.

We also watched Inception to learn about dreams, As Good As It Gets to learn about OCD, Secret Window to learn about DID (again) and Shutter Island and A Beautiful Mind for learning about Schizophrenia. Also One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest but that was just to learn about how poorly the mentally ill have been treated historically.

I worked with someone who admitted he recently "Couldn't read faces" and that's when I knew, he was Sam.
It's kind of weird hearing a trailer, even in 2001, open with a kid saying "what's wrong with your father, why is he acting like a RETARD?" And of course the "every parent has moments where they feel retarded" line. If I had no idea this movie was real, I would assume this was just a Tropic Thunder style parody of a trailer.
I saw the trailer in a theater with my college gf and she whispered "We have to see that" through half tears and that's when I knew the relationship was over.

This movie is so manipulative. As a dad, the thought of losing your kids is horrifying. And Penn’s performance is over the top but his emotion over losing her is genuinely heartbreaking. The trailer is depressing but the moment Michelle Pfeiffer drops the big R in her courtroom speech all of the tension and drama just vanishes. One of the best Stav laughs ever.
